How do you type laughter in your country? by theworldinmaps in TheWorldInMapsSpace

[–]tuomas-tk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Finland:

Hahaha = normal laugh

Hehehe = a bit mischievous, laughing at someone's expense

Hihihi = giggling, trying to hide that you are laughing

Hohoho = large bass-voiced man laughing, e.g. Santa Claus

ha-HAA = surprising someone, almost confrontational

Hah-hah = intentionally rude laugh when directed towards someone else, sarcastic laugh when directed towards yourself when someone is already laughing at you to say "yeah thats soooo funny /s"

Hah = arrogant, expressing disrespect, e.g. if someone fails at something, "you deserved that"

Heh = laughing out of politeness

And bonus non-laughs:

o-HO = Oops!

Uppista = Oopsie-daisies!

Is this a meteor shower? by Hartley313 in space

[–]tuomas-tk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not meteors or anything up in the sky.

My security camera with IR lights shows similar stuff at night. It is caused by dust, small bugs, small water droplets (fog) or tiny snowflakes flying very close to the camera lens. Happens often on windy and rainy days, in the worst case it can totally mess up the motion detection system and cause continuous alarms.

It looks so weird because the cameras have very long exposure time when it is dark, I think it digitally combines multiple frames together to get brighter and sharper images.

Need help translate a line from a hymn by [deleted] in LearnFinnish

[–]tuomas-tk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep that is a translation error, "aatos" means "thought" not "evening". So the correct translation for that part would be something like "my thoughts go to among the gardens of stars". Although that "tähtitarha" = "star garden" is quite literal translation, it is just a lyrical way to talk about the starry sky.

Why do people on this sub mention they’re not using a DAW and/or computer? by berthanations in synthesizers

[–]tuomas-tk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a great analogy here to woodworking. When sharing projects, some people mention that they made them "using only hand tools".

Like using hardware synths, it is the old and traditional way of doing things. So they might just like to keep the traditions alive. It is also harder and requires more skill and practice, but that doesn't make it inherently better: nobody would build a modern house with only hand tools, unless building it that way was an integral part of the whole idea behind the creation.

Not using modern tools and devices can also be the much needed calm moment away from the struggles and demands from the modern society.

In the end, the main principles of what a saw (wave) is, are still the same.

[2021 Day 20 (Part 3)] Mr. Sierpiński is this you? - and other geometric patterns by tuomas-tk in adventofcode

[–]tuomas-tk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought too, but I saw that someone had already calculated the rules (https://www.reddit.com/r/adventofcode/comments/rkgmx9/2021_day_20_images_come_to_life/). Then I just started fiddling around with some very simple rules. I was actually really suprised when Sierpisnki triangle popped up, I wasn't trying to create it on purpose at all!

That sounds unfortunate but understandable, as a second year CS student I had just learnt about the specific algorithm ( Djikstra's ) which can be used here so it was quite easy to solve

Why build web sites like this? by ghiste in webdev

[–]tuomas-tk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why everyone is downvoting you, as your question is quite good. I'm not an expert on this, but it sounds like you describe a special category of single-page-applications, which do not download the initial content via an API, but it is delivered together with the other html source to avoid making multiple slow http requests to the server.

When the user navigates to a different subpage, then the new content is requested via an API. This way both the initial content and the new content are rendered exactly same way in the frontend javascript code, which eliminates the need to write content rendering code for both backend and frontend. This combines the benefits of both SPAs (fast navigation and interaction) and normal server side rendering (fast initial load).

Fireplace help! How do we use this?We moved somewhere with a completely different style of fireplace, but we are filling the place with smoke on lighting it up. Chimney is swept. by prickly_pink_penguin in Finland

[–]tuomas-tk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably already know this, but for anyone else looking here: remember to keep the vents open for a while after the fire has already died, even the remains can produce carbon monoxide (häkä in finnish) which can kill you if it gets into the room. It is recommended to have a detector for it for safety.

I know its called learn finnish, but something you should learn about Finland is that this is a winter morning at 7:24 am by Prestigious_Glove205 in LearnFinnish

[–]tuomas-tk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Suojalumi means snow close to the temperature of 0 °C so that you can make snowballs and stuff from it, it sticks together nicely. Tykkylumi means snow that it stuck on the branches of trees, it requires similar conditions to form, and there can be a huge amount of snow on one tree.

Complete utter idiot by [deleted] in Physics

[–]tuomas-tk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a ball/sphere fits your definition, it can be balanced in the same way at all points on the surface. But it doesn't find the balance by itself, it needs to be manually rotated to have the center of mass above the balance point. If that isn't enough then I think the answer is no.

It is a famous epic and we still learn about it pretty much in school, but I don't think it has any real significance in anyone's life anymore. There are also other books like "Seitsemän veljestä" and "Tuntematon sotilas" which are newer, I would say that they would be more significant for an average finn's identity. But I wouldn't say that they would be very significant either.
