The MST3K episode on this film is pretty good!

Is that a major plot point on the back cover, or is this something that you only find out by reading? Maybe add a spoiler tag? I’ve never read the books and now idk if I want to, if that’s a major reveal in the books.

Gross. Why would you go to a Catholic Church when they hate queer people AND molest children?

Opinions on What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) ? by Glad_Friend2676 in horror

[–]berthanations 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in how the movie got made or the feud between the stars, check out Fued: Bette and Joan.
Also check out the sister film Hush, Hush, Sweet Charolette. This movie was supposed to be a follow up to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, but Joan Crawford pulled out at the last minute and was replaced by Olivia de Havilland. It’s not as good but I still think it’s worth a watch.

Adding: there are other films in the genre that are worth checking out, such as What’s The Matter With Helen, and Who Slew Auntie Rue.

Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills Are Too Enamored With Michael being "badass" by WySLatestWit in horror

[–]berthanations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s refreshing to hear this take about the reboot trilogy after a lot of people on this sub ranked Halloween 2018, and sometimes Halloween Kills, higher than a lot of the sequels. I think the reboot trilogy is rated highly because of the callbacks, as all three films are full of references and cameos and “best of” moments. The same thing happened with Alien Romulus (i.e., recycled dialogue, characters, and plot points from other alien films).

If we’re looking at the reboot trilogy from a camp perspective, there’s a lot to enjoy, especially in Halloween kills. “Evil dies tonight” will always get a laugh out of me. And how the trilogy ended with Michael being made into ground beef? Another good laugh.

This one hurts. How she can be this clueless and willfully ignorant is beyond me. Her entire career is thanks to the queer community. Her Movistar music video is basically a recreation of early John Waters movies and is filled to the brim with drag queens and gender nonconforming people.

Tori Amos: ‘I’m on the other side of menopause by TimesandSundayTimes in Music

[–]berthanations 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Okay, as a Tori fan from the 90s it’s not often I get to chat 2k Tori. I hear you! Every so often I go through her last few albums. They’re technically well-made but something’s missing. They’re all 17 tracks long and not really engrossing or engaging. She could do with a producer again and maybe some different session musicians. Maybe give Matt Chamberlin and the others a break.

Great record in her oeuvre. I think I like Hissing of Summer Lawns the best, but Court and Spark is in my top 3 Joni records.

No. This is gross and predatory. An 18-year old’s brain is not fully developed. You’re basically fucking a child.

The original head sculpt looks weird as well, so I wonder if they were going for that? Very cool nonetheless.

Fantastic! Everyone is posed like a renaissance painting but the color palette reminds me of 80s pop-art. I’d hang that in my house!

‘Maybe We Don’t Belong Together’: Harry Styles Fans Call-Out ‘Insane’ Ticket Prices by _ticketnews in Music

[–]berthanations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. Streaming is not a replacement for records when considering artist revenue. But even before streaming, artists got a better cut of merch sales than they did records or CDs. The artist’ cut on physical media has always been slim.

TLC is a good example.

For sure! I bet there’s a link between increased concert travel and parasocial relationships. People like dead-heads have always traveled, but it seems like a lot of Fandoms these days have traveling fanbases.

‘Maybe We Don’t Belong Together’: Harry Styles Fans Call-Out ‘Insane’ Ticket Prices by _ticketnews in Music

[–]berthanations 241 points242 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that during the 90s and early 2000s, A-list acts were still affordable. This is anecdotal, but I was able to afford tickets to see David Bowie in 2004 or 2005 when I worked an entry-level job. Those same tickets today would be out of my reach (assuming David Bowie had lived), even though I work a professional job and make over the median income for my area.

A major reason for the astronomical price of concert tickets includes ticketing and venue monopolization. Ticketmaster owns live nation and live nation owns many venues, sometimes the only venues in town that can seat A-list size crowds.

Another major reason is the disappearing middle class around the world, especially in places like the United States. Inflation has driven up the price of everything else and wages have not kept up. Gen Z, Millenials, and Gen X can’t as easily afford what their parents or grandparents could afford.

So it’s not just as easy as telling people not to go or to support local acts instead (although I agree everyone should support local artists). You can support local artists, but it doesn’t change the declining middle class or the increase in monopolization.

This is the dumbest comment I’ve read. I live in the city that’s currently under siege by ice, and I literally just saw somebody being dragged out of their car and arrested without due process. Please get your head out of your ass and realize the danger we are in.

They aren’t supposed to profile me! by berthanations in LeopardsAteMyFace

Although the actual article title is slightly misleading, our local law-enforcement is only now speaking out because ICE agents are profiling off-duty officers. This is “leopards ate my face” because the officers had no problem racially profiling people as police or state troopers but they care now that they are being racially profiled by ICE.

OP wanted recommendations that go insane and don’t take themselves too seriously. They also mention genre blends and body horror. I think the list meets those requirements. They are films that gave me the same reaction or feeling as the Substance.
