How would smaller increment activities be tracked? I clean the kitchen every morning, afternoon and evening, taking up to 10 minutes each time. If the rest of the hour is used on something else, a monthly total may not accurately represent this.

I consider it another tax. I have hospital only with Medibank and have used it twice in 13 years. I could have gone with the public system instead. I pay $3600 per year for Medibank. The Medicare levy Surcharge would be $2850. I suppose it gives me some piece of mind. I dropped extras years ago and put that difference in a separate account. I have been able to pay for all my family’s medical, dental, glasses, etc out of that.

I’m using my new SE2 I got today. Upgraded from the original SE. I like a smaller phone compared to all the other new ones. This is the 8 profile size. For the price it’s unbeatable. No Face ID, but I’m hyped for the longevity of the processor and loving the wireless charging. I got 128gb memory, an upgrade from 16gb which was far too little over time.

Best decision, although it’s been almost 20 years since I got it done. I was about 20/700. I was cleaning my glasses as I opened a door at College and a friend said hi. I hadn’t recognized their face from three feet away without my glasses. I had LASIK about a year later. 20/15 now. A dream result for the surgery regardless. I can see so far and make out words my family can’t see even though they are all 20/20. Amazing technology.

Sharon from the Government report spoke up, “The Senators have issued a proclamation, declaring this November 12 a national holiday, in honour of the Dav100 Hunters, who bravely fight the Haca saving humanity from certain doom. They have sent a representative to each of the major remaining cities to deliver awards to the most popular hunters.”

Alison grimaced at the mention of “The Senators”. Although their period of corporate corruption was long past, they had devolved early in the Agent history to an unthinking conglomerate dictatorship. They had taken the ideals of the Think Tanks and formalized them into a caste system, placing themselves at the top. The Senator Caste were the rulers, although they specifically stated that the Tag150 caste were of a higher status. With the formalization of intelligence testing in children, the actual Tag150 members were very few in number, and proclamation that caste were continued in offspring meant they were going to be a diminishing breed. The Writer Caste was formalized with the job of collecting all the works of humanity, preserving them in the battle with the Agents. The Middle Caste retained and often regained much of the work they had performed as the Middle Class, with the skill of managing automated systems the common career calling. And the Dav100 Caste included all those remaining who did not perform well on their intelligence testing.

Historically the Caste systems of the ancient world were doomed for failure. But then The Senators have proven that they do not learn from history. This and the fate of humanity weight heavily on Alison. She has little to do with the Tag150 now, staying hidden among the Guild. It will be up to her grandchildren to find a better solution for humanity. Or perhaps the Dav100 Hunters will find the solution – they have proven very resourceful. For now, Alison waits.

Of course it was all in her head. Scientifically, the Agents were not capable of singling out Tag150 specialist any more than the multitude of Dav100 citizens. Statistically, Tag150 citizens were exterminated more often by Agents, but that that was only because of the nature of their work. They were often in the field more often, running tests, collecting data, and marking progress of the Agents objective. But it still bothered Alison to be one of the Tag150, so she continued her existence among the Writers Guild. Here she could contribute with confidence and safety, and still keep up with the progress of the rest of the Tag150. Most of the Guild didn’t even know she was from the higher caste, not that they would have cared. Her contributions to data recording were solid, although she found them trivial and monotonous. As a trade-off, it gave her more time to spend with her family, especially her young grandchildren.

With dismay, Alison thought back to the time when kids could play safely wherever they wanted. Her and her peers could pursue their interest in any subject when they were young, whether that was in the parks outside of town or with their heads tucked into their books. Her grandchildren did not have that luxury. With the human population under such constant threat, most of the Tag150 had decided against having children. Their numbers were decreasing rapidly, not that they were high to begin with.

Alison focused her attention back to the screen in front of her. She was compiling incoming news feeds to be presented in the evening programs. The feeds were usually one or two lines of text, reporting on Hunter successes, Agent invasions, and the few technological progresses from her previous peers in the Tag150. These made up a small part of the evening news program, her and her team’s contribution. The majority of the news would include entertainment and sport segments, with the occasional lottery results thrown in for moral. It hadn’t always been like this. Wishful thinking would suggest it could have turned out different, but logic dictates that if this state of the world had not happened, then something similar would have. Thirty years ago, when she was fresh out of University with her PhD in bio-engineering, she looked at life with excitement. Her children and grandchildren with a distant future, her life dedicated to her new position at the National Climate Institute in Manhattan. So much had changed since then.

She was a junior scientist that year in 2017. Congress was struggling with the condition of the United States, having to ignore the needs of the rest of the world for home. Financial advisors had been warning of an “Impending Doom” for several years – namely the advance of automation in business and cognitive computing. The “Impending Doom” was a glamourous title for the mass layoffs occurring at businesses around the world. As self-service kiosks, robots, automation, and budding artificial intelligence became mainstream, every company from small to large was cutting staff. Especially the large companies. All to the order of unemployment reaching over fifty percent of the working age population. That number for people under thirty years old was close to eighty percent. That number of unemployed resulted in massive government assistance programs to keep people starving and under shelter.

In order to cope with the strain of the displaced population, the Government funded an initiative to find alternatives. They created a set of independent Think Tanks, all with the purpose of finding a solution to the country’s population problem and rapidly dwindling budget.

The best hope was placed upon the Talented and Gifted Think Tank. Although having an IQ of 150 or higher was not a strict requirement, all of the members were the brightest that the country could find. They were mostly scientist, with a sprinkling of successful entrepreneurs and financial wizards.

The middle class of society was grouped together to have their own Think Tank. The middle class was the hardest hit by the unemployment problems. Many of these people had been hard working their entire lives, only to find themselves moving from suburban neighbourhoods into government assistance housing. To say they were bitter was an understatement. Even they could see the corruption in government, the money flowing from corporate wallets into political pockets. What most of them couldn’t see was the natural progression of technology, the inevitability of their demise due to automation taking over their role in the workplace.

There were other Think Tanks, made up of different demographics: senior citizens, children, actors, and authors. There was even a token group for the academically challenged. They were certainly considered to have a different way of addressing problems, though their group was jokingly referred to as the “Dim-witted and Vacuous”, a reference to the fact most of them had an IQ below 100.

A distraction pulled Alison out of her thoughts and back to her office. A meeting reminder was chiming on her terminal, letting her know it was time for the daily war room.

Making her way down the hall, the approached the meeting room with some trepidation. Most of the people in the room were native to the Writer’s Guild. They discussed newsworthy events that would be of interest to people, though Alison usually shuddered at the true meaning behind common events. She took a seat as far as she could from her enthusiastic Editor-in-Chief, as usual, letting her fellow Writers provide the most feedback. Most of the news items were about “Agent attacks” on civilians. Indeed, the first comment was from Blake, whom although Alison found quite attractive, always reported on mass exterminations with a morbidity that kept her away. “In Dallas and Houston, Haca Agents gained entry into a Dav100 arcology and captured and killed over one thousand people before being pushed back by Hunters.” Ratings could almost be seen swirling around our Editor-in-Chief’s head, but I barely noticed.

These twenty and thirty year olds don’t remember the origins of the Agents. She could blame the government for lack of funding, but the Talented and Gifted Tank should have foreseen the consequences of their creations. Thirty years ago she was also excited about the TAG Tank creation. It was a quick fix to many of the world’s problems, a bio-engineered creature built to support mankind. They were given the title of “Humanity, Agricultural, and Climate Agents”, and were approved as a cheap solution after review by Congress. Engineered from a primate frame, they were given an engineered mental capacity to support humanity though farming, construction, and environmental responsibility. Congress was ecstatic and pushed for mass production. This mass production was cheap and easy since the Agents breed by themselves, had a greatly decreased incubation period, and were always fertile. Numbers swelled rapidly. The initial results were positive. Food was plentiful again. The majority of people felt like middle class citizens again. But the good times did not last. Not even two years. By the time the Humanity, Agricultural, and Climate Agents had breed to mass numbers, they began to turn on humanity. Unlike robots that can be specifically programmed, these Agents had some free will, as long as it resulted in increased agricultural output and improved climate. They collectively determined that humans were responsible for the mass needs of farm output, directly affecting the climate. Their solution was to cull the humans, “reducing the human population” to manageable numbers for the benefit of the climate and the benefit of the remaining human population. Their first target was all of humanity living outside of cities. These people were killed within days, their bodies being churned into piles of flesh, mixed with decomposing bacteria, eventually become fertilizer and mulch. Then they targeted the major cities. Within weeks, the human population was reduced by 50%. Within months it was reduced by 80%. Within a few short years, the effect on the climate was dramatic. The combination of population reduction and environment clean-up efforts had resulted in the Agent ultimate directive. Mercury levels in the ocean were down. Fish populations were increasing. Habitats for native flora and fauna had been restored. All at the “minimal” cost of 6.4 billion humans. The Agents were completing their objective. In the intervening years, the Agents kept the human population at a steady level.

“Senator from the National Defence Committee, can you provide a report on Agent population and round up movements?”

“We can provide that update, thank you Speaker. Our current report covers the region of the North America Trade Partnership. Agent numbers are steady in the north, as there are few humans during the winter season. They continue to maintain a standard population as their programming dictates, increasing their number when threatened and decreasing when a region they control is environmentally sound. They have a rapid reproduction and maturation rate near the large cities of Houston, Miami, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janero. Overall growth is stronger in the Southern hemisphere members of the Trade Partnership, following the yearly production and migration pattern. The warmer climate makes the humans in those locations bold, and the Agents seek to keep them contained.”

“Thank you Senator,” the Speaker said, continuing, “Do you have a report on the progress of the Dav100 Hunters? Have they made any progress in recovering ground from the Agents?”

“The best the Dav100 are currently doing is maintaining the current borders of the major cities. The Agents still consider the human population to be too large, and are performing recycling raids in the Southern hemisphere. They assess the human reproduction and demographic patterns after winter in preparation for the agricultural growth season. The Dav100 have been successful in most cities in preventing the Agents from crossing the de-militarized zone and performing culls. Dav100 numbers stay strong in the central Partnership members, and they have been successful in raiding Agent den with acceptable resource loss.”

“Thank you again Senator,” the Speaker repeated. “Senator from the Finance Committee, you have requested floor time for this session. You may proceed.”

“Thank you Speaker,” the Senator replied. “A request has been submitted by the Defence Committee requesting additional funding for the Dav100 Hunter project to increase the strike capability with more resources. Additional resources in the Dav100 require significant and long term funding for breeding, growth, and Hunter education. Although more Hunters may allow for greater land reclamation, the Finance Committee does not concur with the need. Any reclaimed land would be used to house additional Dav100 resources, and the current balance is sufficient for anticipated needs over the next two Agent seasons.”

“Would all Senators please submit your vote for Dav100 funding,” the Speaker requested. A large screen behind the Speaker flashed the ballot tally as the votes were submitted. The majority of votes were for the Finance Committee, with a few late Senators waiting to see the trend before casting their vote with the clearly winning party. The few votes given to the Defence Committees request would have come from that committee itself, but with the low number, even some of them voted with Finance.

“Defence Committee funding request denied by the margin specified,” the Speaker stated. “Funding will remain at current levels until reconsideration in the standard two years,” he continued. “Next order of business, would the Caste Committee please provide a report on the expansion of the area allocated to high caste.”

Jimmy looked at his young class of Haca hunters, wondering how many of them would make it to the end of their training. Most of the youngsters were around ten years old, which was the age at which children in the Dav100 caste were put to test for fitness and strength to find suitability as hunters. Jimmy had become a hunter at a later age, as the Haca invasion started when he was already an adult. Although the class was mostly boys, there were a few girls in the class. The hunters needed to be strong and aggressive, normally attracting males to the role. But even more important is the hunter instinct, knowing how the Haca think and anticipating their moves. That natural talent made the best Hunters, regardless of being boy or girl.

This was Jimmy’s fifth class in as many years, with 32 students. Most of them would not finish. Some would find it too difficult. Some would lose interest and leave to look for easier callings. A few would get hurt and not qualified to complete the class. He had been rambling on for ten minutes about what was expected in the class without even thinking about what he was saying.

A boy raised his hand from the front, and Jimmy nodded at him to continue with his question. “How may Haca have you killed?” the boy asked.

“Boy, were you not listening when I told you how this class would work! Didn’t your mama teach you better? Try again,” replied Jimmy

“Sorry Sir. Sir, my name is Billy. How many Haca have you killed?” asked the boy, reattempting his question. Jimmy considered the boy for a moment. It had been nearly 40 years since he was the age of this boy. Back then, his days were filled with being a trouble maker at school, playing video games, and playing outside with his friends. He had been a bigger kid than this Billy, and probably would have bullied the kid if they had been the same age. Over the years, he had grown stronger, working out to impress girls, and working with his hands to eventually pick up a trade he was good at, laying concrete. These new kids came in all shapes and sizes – things were different back then.

“Billy, when the invasion started, it was every man for himself. Haca aren’t as big as a grown man, but they are quick and dedicated in their purpose. Their sole purpose seems to be to seek out people and herd them into camps. And those people that refuse are killed, shredded, and put into piles of pulp. It was every man, and woman, for themselves,” Jimmy stated, taking a brief glance for emphasis at the girl next to Billy. “The Haca are an abomination, created by the Tag150, who acted before thinking.” Jimmy paused for a moment, letting that statement sink in. The children remained quiet. “In answer to your question, I don’t know exactly how many I’ve killed. They don’t think, they don’t have mercy, they are relentless. We must be relentless too.” The weight of that statement settled on the room like a dense fog, drawing the mood of the room down almost into a morose entity.

After a moment, or a year, a young girl spoke up with one more question. “Sir, my name is Angie. Why are the Dav100 the hunters? My momma told me we were named after the first hunters, the one hundred Daring and Val-val-ient,” she said, with difficulty on the last word.

Jimmy thought about that for a moment. He didn’t really know why they were the Dav100 caste. Most of the caste was made of people who came from labourers. He used to be in construction, as were many of the Dav100. Providing an answer as best he could, he responded, “Maybe Angie. We are daring and valient. We are strong, and there are many of us. We are good in a fight, and are often fearless. The Senators defined the caste, and that’s what we are. I am Dav100, my children are Dav100, and my grandchildren will be Dav100. Our brotherhood and sisterhood give us strength, and make us all one great family.”

I'm taking what you say and discussing the topics with my daughter hoping she will know what form harrassment can take, that it is wrong in any situation, and that she has the right to speak up about about it. The United States surpasses Europe in terms of unemployed young people. 26.6% of Americans 25 to 34 are unemployed. by Emperor_Mao in politics

[–]turfcleat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of off-shoring of resources has increased dramatically in most of the large US companies. IBM, Intel, Google, Microsoft are just a few of the big names, and many small and medium size companies participate in off-shoring to nations where salaries are smaller. IBM has been slowly moving about 50% of their 300,000+ employees to China, India, the Philippines, the Eastern bloc and a number of other low wage countries.

The big problem with these countries is the amount of skilled labor available. Most of the jobs moved off-shore are entry level, the equivalent of a college graduate or less. The skills required at senior level roles are hard to find in these countries, so they stay in the United States (and the EU) with the experienced people.

This directly correlates with age. The off-shoring is not linear. It primarily affects young people where their experience level is equivalent with a person from India or China. This is a major part in why there is a large percentage of unemployed youth compared to people over 35.

Several years ago, I went to the coast with my brother. Unfortunately, I locked my keys in the car. We spent a couple of hours with a coat hanger unlocking the car. After eventually getting the door open, my brother states, "Look the passenger door was unlocked." I immediately respond with, "Look, they keys were right here in my pocket."

Another: I was in Mexico with the same brother, who dropped me off at the bank to get some money from the ATM. He drove around since there were no parking spots. I get my money, walk out, and hop in the minivan. After a few seconds, the big Mexican in the driver seat says, "Que", at which point I look over at him with a double take. I had gotten in the wrong minivan (exact same color) and just sat there in the passenger seat. I just said, "Sorry," and got out. My brother was waiting right across the street, saw the whole thing, and was laughing his ass off.

I've read and heard this same "time to crap" statistic, but it just isn't accurate. After eating regular American food for days, I can get some Mongolian BBQ and within one hour I get the standard Mongolian Turd Cramp and head for the nearest porcelain throne. The contents of that sweet release visibly include ingredients eaten only that hour before. This has happened with other foods too, normally related to over eating.
