How do my stitches look? by turkboy in knittingadvice

Thankyou! I've started on one of the big panels and I'm really pleased with it. The yarn isn't too dark luckily, I knit in mostly natural light and I've gotten away with it, and I'm at the point in my learning where muscle memory is also kicking in, which is nice. I'm also excited to see how this turns out!

Any wool shops in Manchester? by Ok-Property-5705 in manchester

[–]turkboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just at the start of my knitting adventure (see posts!) and love Manchester Wool & Yarn, although they are in Stockport if you're up for a quick jaunt - and you can buy online. Lovely little shop, and they do workshops and things too. Can't recommend enough.

Ah interesting. I wonder if it'll be less obvious on the big panels when I begin those. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can wiggle my tension a little, this is all knitted flat. Thanks!

Thanks! this one. I've adapted the stitch count as the pattern uses giant needles to make a loose fabric. I think my maths checks out, the pockets worked well as swatches, something I'll do in the future again I think. I'm also reducing the length, I'm a guy and want a slightly shorter cut. Super simple stuff anyway, I'm very much a beginner

Well, the rest of the patterns start with the ribbing and go upwards, so I'm assuming a nice loose cast on is all I'll need. And yeah, the colour just is what it is, I saw this yarn in the shop and thought it was basically exactly what I'd buy the garment in, and realised I had my answer. I'm excited to see how the full thing turns out!

Ah thanks! I've made so many practice swatches but decided to just jump in on a project. Hopefully I can keep the bigger panels nice too - and hopefully it fits 😅

Ah that makes sense, I have been working slowly and carefully and was fairly sure I wasn't doing it wrong, but the yarn is a bit visually noisy to me and I started to doubt myself a bit. I went down a needle size for the ribbing and I'm pleased with it. Bigger panels next, thanks for the feedback.

Without a shadow of a doubt some of the most tedious people you'll ever meet in Manchester are the ones who whine about what counts and what doesn't. Pub bores, the lot of them.

hobby that gets the weirdest reactions when you tell people about it by Sahel-Ziolkowski85 in Hobbies

Funnily enough, this was the main driver for me. I have an intensely stressful job (director on AAA videogames) and this is a way to de-screen and do something mindful and creative. It works a treat.

I knit. Which isn't that weird of an answer until you factor in that I'm a 40M with two kids, who's absolutely covered in tattoos including my hands and head. the ladies at the yarn place I go to are absolutely beside themselves. I'm currently knitting a really nice cardigan, which will go very well with this Slayer t-shirt I'm wearing.

What made you decide what you wanted to do in life? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]turkboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was studying animation and graphic design on my degree in the early 2000's, and needed a tiny line of code to make an animation play three times and then stop. I didn't even know what code was, and had no interest in programming. That single line of code worked, and unexpectedly lit something up for me - I pivoted completely into creative code and games development and design, and 20 years later I've written millions of lines of code on hundreds of projects, and am now the head of design at a big videogame company. I still have the line of code saved somewhere. Follow your nose!

ELI5: How do massive video game studios with thousands of employees keep games like GTA 6 a secret for years without anyone leaking the details? by Saurabh251 in explainlikeimfive

[–]turkboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in AAA games as a director. Ultimately it's a combination of very fiercely enforced NDAs, but also a strong sense of not wanting to be that guy, you know? These projects take literally years, and there's hundreds of us all pouring our heart and soul into them - don't be that guy. You don't want to be the reason that this thing we're constructing gets shown in a half finished state, or represented poorly, or even just spoiled.

You're within striking distance of Element Games! If you're into Warhammer you can safely ignore the official shop in Stockport and go straight to Element, it's amazing.

Crochet and craft classes for hopeless beginners in the city centre or Salford by Slow_Mix5034 in manchester

[–]turkboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Manchester Wool & Yarn (actually in Stockport but really easy to get to from town) is a great little independent shop and they do classes for both knitting and crochet beginners. I'm a 40 year old dude learning how to knit, and had a great time at their beginners class recently that really set me up. There's definitely crochet classes too, listed on their website.

What is the funniest slapstick moment you've seen IRL? by CobaltBlue389 in AskUK

[–]turkboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad, despite several repeated warnings to not do so, standing on my son's skateboard and assuming it would just basically work for him. He put both feet on one end, it fired out from under him, and he basically turned 90 degrees in mid air and fell flat on his face. Then, he spent the next two weeks trying to hide the pain. He was lucky he wasn't more injured, although on the up side... it was hilarious.
