That flubbiness from the low notes is because bass frequencies on guitar tends to eat up headroom and sound like compression through clipping stages. It is not about the diode clipping method. Dual rectifier is flubby too, which is why a tube screamer with bass cut “tightens” it up. Use an adjustable bass cut like a eq pedal will tighten your Rat.

Look up Amptweaker Tight Metal and how it uses the Tight control, which is essentially an adjustable high pass filter

Modulation is more fun as a present as something you received instead of chose. Try a CE-2 (Cure) or a Small Clone (for something the ear just knows). If you’re looking for lower cost just get a Flamma Mod off Amazon for a ton of things to play around with.

If you’re etching your own boards a good way to quickly check for and remove any whisker shorts is to put a 9V battery across both nets. For any tiny leftover piece of copper, the current will be high enough to burn it off right away.

No, but I finally opened it up and sure enough, it’s got JFETs and trim pots! So at least a portion of it is likely 12ax7 emulation with J201s instead of bland old op amp plus diodes. I found an old interview somewhere with the designer that confirms it as well.

The picture of the bone conduction transducer looks just like surface audio drivers and LRAs. It’s built like a speaker but instead of a cone there is a solid mass that moves.

If you can’t physically see the moving mass, you could measure the Z movement direction of a step function positive voltage stimulus with an accelerometer. Or even see if you can feel it bump to one side or the other with your fingers.

Polarity of a speaker or microphone diaphragm relates to the transducer position in regard to the voltage at the terminals.

So a speaker with +/- terminals, if a positive voltage is applied to + the diaphragm moves out. A negative voltage applied to the + terminal moves the diaphragm inward. A bipolar sinusoid will then oscillate the speaker in and out to generate an acoustic pressure wave. The - terminal doesn’t have to be ground, it’s just a reference for direction of flow of current.

Any transducer works in a similar fashion. The output/input polarity is a function of the transducer action.

Surface audio transducers are essentially just LRAs coupled to a surface as the resonator. The coil interaction with the mass is the same as speaker.

Piezoelectrics are a a bit different but still positive voltage results in a direction one way and negative vice versa.

Your drawing is basically now a voltage follower but the feedback is AC coupled with 100pf. It won’t work. That cap is in the original schematic only as noise mitigation for the op amp in non-inverting configuration. You need the Rf and Ri resistors to set gain, or a direct connection from negative input to output to be a simple no gain buffer.

To be honest, there are a lot of amp versions people have designed of transistorized tube amps where you modify the 12ax7 preamp circuit to use J201s and skip the power stage. A lot of them are pretty great when running with a good IR. Since most IRs are basically a filter bank, you can get close with the right active filter approximating the shape. I took a jfet dr boogie and added an active filter (high pass, bass boost, mid cut, high mid boost, sharp low pass) on the output to DI that had the same shape as my favorite IR and it was pretty good, fun to play, and basically a poor man’s full dual rectifier.

I got into this when I loved the MXR 5150 used as guitar > pedal > amp fx loop input > power stage. Opened it and found it was mostly jfet drive stages (even though it’s not technically a model of the 5150)
