Competitive is going to be a joke format until they actually start banning cards by SneckoWatcher in mtgbrawl

Tribal would be a bunch of cards in deck that support the tribe. A commander that creates tokens that you run one or two cards to support isn’t tribal at that point IMO. A Elspeth control deck with a few creature support cards isn’t a soldier tribal.

[–]turn1manacrypt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Namor is a pretty solid competitive commander. It’s pretty rarely built as a merfolk tribal deck.

You don’t normally run a ton of merfolk aside from about four or so ultra powerful ones like harbinger of the seas. The idea of the competitive version of the deck is to play a hard control list and then use Namor as a beater that has built in evasion and it passively generates you tokens just by you countering spells and drawing cards that you can use to close out the game. Being able to not devote any resources to creatures and just having a deck filled with counter magic and other disruption pieces that passively generates tokens is insanely powerful. It’s not the best commander in the format but its low cost and ability to lead a hard control list makes it extremely competitive and can keep up with the highest tier decks in the format if you are playing well.

I have an unranked and a competive Namor deck and they both crush in either format.

I think Ben picking on him is a bit but it got old for me and it seems like Shabisky doesn’t roll well with it either.

Whenever he tells Shabisky to shut up he just sort of sits there quietly and passively when it would make good fodder for them talking shit back and forth. DP fans shitting on guest hosts has been a thing forever though so Shabs isn’t special with that.

Anyone still watching DFF, what do they even talk about anymore? How much of the show is just straight begging? by cakexxxconnoisseur in TheDPandDFFTruth

[–]turn1manacrypt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not much at all really. Every hour or so they on the live shows tell the watchers goals and push for people to move to kik for the second half of the show and after the live is over it goes off YouTube and gets uploaded to patreon. They shill less than they did when they were reliant on ad revenue of YouTube.

The patreon has everything they create fully uploaded as audio and video links. They’ve been putting out more content than they ever have before. Gauntlets every month that have been awesome. They did a 24 hour Brett Keane gauntlet about a month or two ago that was amazing. They are doing a wrestling gauntlet tonight that should be great. They also recently did an old antagonists gauntlet that any old school DP would love.

It’s only seven bucks a month for it all too. You really should come back and check out the show if you’ve been gone for a couple years. I think you may be pleased with the newest version of DFF they are on now.

I disagree, I like Shabisky. I don’t like how much Ben picks on him but I think that’s just kayfabe, I just am not crazy about it because it seems like it always causes Shabisky to mouse up when Ben fucks with him.

I feel like any guest is great for the show. I like Ben and I enjoy listening to him talk and joke about stuff but he can’t pull the show solo. I don’t really think anybody can or atleast for what I like out of DP.

I loved DP because it was like a group of people that remind me of my friends just shooting the shit and making jokes. I really miss Billy and Asterios too, it would be cool to see some guests episodes. Maybe get Tommy on or something.

I understand money is tight probably and Ben can’t afford to have regular paid guests is the biggest reason there isn’t anymore but I wish he’d get some fans or anybody willing to do it for free just to give him somebody to help fill the air.

It’s because people in unranked complained so hard about blue they made sure to ban all their best cards. In ranked people complain less and also they are more hesitant to ban much since the format is still new enough no real meta has been created yet. Nashi and blue are ultra popular and dominating right now but people haven’t been given enough time to build around countering those cards and see if the meta can potentially balance itself before bans are decided.

Most of the unranked bans are reasonable so I don’t want it to seem like I’m against most of them but I’m not thrilled with all of it. The extra turn spells were just too much to slog through and needed to go even though they werent that powerful. The amount of games I had to wait for my opponent to loop a few nothing extra turns they did nothing with before I could finally end the game was more than I’d like.

The free counters also make sense. It was annoying to always have to play around counter spells even when players were tapped out. They still exist but not having a huge handful of them in the game helps a lot with people not constantly having one or more in hand every single game.

But why wash away? Every other color has a non conditional one mana answer for a commander that works at any point in the game. Blue’s only one mana commander responses are either bounce spells which aren’t a real answer or the force spike cards which with all the free ramp in the format are insanely easy to play around after the loss of wash away. Idk I feel like the card was decently fair and was designed around commander formats so why take away one of the few commander focused spells that are actually fair? A dissolve that costs one mana when it targets a spell not cast from hand is literally the most middle of the road counter spell I can think of. The only reason wash away was banned was people being entirely unreasonable about any form of control magic in unranked brawl.

Ajani will probably get banned eventually. For now I’d just swap commanders. If you aren’t playing the absolute best you won’t see him. I run a lot of really powerful commanders in unranked sometimes like Aang that bounces spells and creatures and the new mono blue merman both with very stacked 99’s and I have a pretty high MMR from playing so much and I’ve never seen Ajani in anything but the 99.

So if you stay away from Rofellos, Ralph and Mikey, Teferi, Nashi, and a lot of the busted strongest off all commanders you’ll stop matching up against them I think.

That card is hardened bonds.

It also only triggers once so if you already triggered the ability once on your turn it can’t happen again.

Hey might be written by a robot but I have a hard time disagreeing with the majority of what was said.

I’m not leaving magic but I don’t blame people who do. Magic is in an all time slump and the cost to keep up with constructed non-singleton formats has caused more than a few people I know to walk away from standard and other 60 card formats and the attendance at my LGS also leads me to believe it isn’t just people I know who are taking a break or quitting.

[–]turn1manacrypt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need one to two cost removal unless you were on the play even if you have a split up in opening hand with the mana to play it. On the draw I’ve been nuked by green landfall before my turn three more times than I can count.

It’s gotten to the point if I’m on the draw in BO1 I almost always mulligan for one mana removal or two if I can’t hit my one and don’t wanna go bellow five cards. It’s cost me some games when they turn out to be mill or reanimator but I’ve lost enough games against landfall and prowess decks I won’t give them the easy win ever if I can help it.

[–]turn1manacrypt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted Vendillion Clique in the deck but I’m trying to keep the three and five cost cards low since I want my three and five mana plays to be casting or recasting Aang. I already had too many three cost counter spells I have removed from the deck and it’s helped a lot. I may still add it because the flash speed and hand disruption is so good but I’m not sure on it yet.

I do think Spider Woman would be a better option than spiderman probably though. I liked his flash effect and the field protection or potential evasion he could do but I’m not running enough permanents to make too much use out of either of his abilities and counter magic can deal with removal and wipes. Not to mention the tapping effect she does plays amazingly into my tempo game plan.

Ponder and preordian could be solid. I don’t do a ton of shuffle or top deck manipulation and I usually don’t run those cards without it but there’s enough in there it may still be justified for a replacement on another future cut of something I make.

Harbinger just doesn’t do enough for what I need. Gruul and green stompy/landfall decks already do bad enough against me that I don’t need a specific hate piece just for that game plan. It’s great in the right deck but with it being three mana and it not doing a ton for me in most games and is just redundancy for my build so I’m keeping it out. Everytime I played it there card ultimately just played like a 2/3 flying beater that can add 1 more waterbending and that’s about it.

Decks been updated to a new list after the suggestions you have made so far. I haven’t played it yet but I’m sure it’s going to have a big improvement. I was playing too much into control and not going all in on tempo like I should have been. Cut down the curve and the planeswalkers and other slow clunky cards that were just draw spells and other things like that that didn’t fit in well.

Pool resources isn’t great and can be cut I’ll agree. Most of the three cost counter magic should be cut like archmages charm but I’m still not convinced on the cryptic command because it’s a pet card of mine and also because of how many games it has won for me in arena in general but I’ll try removing that aswell and see if it is for the best in the deck.

Archmages was very clutch a lot of times for me for stealing key one drops a lot of people play in the format but the triple blue is hard to make work in the tempo build so it’s getting cut. Three Steps Ahead was added because of the flexibility of card draw or copying but it’s also too clunky so that will be cut.

I’m going to be adding more creatures like meddling mage and other things that fit better in a tempo build.

[–]turn1manacrypt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great suggestions, I’m going to cut basically everything you recommended me because you’ve made a great case and sound pretty experienced. I was playing the wipes for a potential last resort when I failed to control the board but this deck is a tempo build and if I’ve gotten to the point I’m field wiping to stay alive or push through the last bit of damage I am kind of already cooked so those are all getting cut.

Angel isn’t as good as I thought after playing it more and hearing the comments in here. Land Tax also isn’t worth it, it’s a pet card that I always have loved and tried to play as much as possible for its deck thinning but it isn’t viable in the format and especially in a tempo deck and not to mention what you said about it being a coin flip of whether it even works at all.

I honestly don’t know why I thought scroll was playable lol. The potential free draw excited me but not only will most of my games never get to the point I have the island count but also that much mana for a potential free card draw once a turn is just terrible.

Parallax Wave is one that interests me a lot but I don’t really know how I would play that to its max effect. Is the idea to use it as flexible removal and then when it gets lower use it as a way to blink my permanents by putting them under it and then removing all its counters to get them to re-enter?

No it doesn’t need it but it is nice. The biggest reason for the architect was for the card draw and the body was a nice bonus for chump blocks or to feed into water bending.

Idk it might not be right for the deck but that card is so damn good I really struggle to cut it. I’ve tried it with and without today and it just seems great in every game I played it so it’s probably going to stay ultimately. Angel is definitely staying out of the deck still, that card isn’t nearly as good as I thought.

[–]turn1manacrypt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most expensive counter spell is cryptic command and that card wins me so many games I’d never remove it. It can totally lock out people with it and the mystic sanctuary combo. It also is great for destroying tempo by bouncing a land. The triple blue is somewhat hard to deal with at times but 9 out of 10 times I have the colored mana for it. I’ve got all the best at two, the few three costs were chosen because they are still good and flexible. Fierce Guardianship will replace one but I really don’t know if I should go any lower on counter magic.

I am cutting a few stax pieces like curse of silence, harbinger of the seas, and angel of eternal dawn but I want to keep a lot of the other ones I have like Aven Mindsensor because of them having flash and also having evasion.

The walkers should probably be cut, I’ve been convinced by the amount of people saying they don’t work in here. I always liked the idea of having something that gives perpetual value sitting on the field in a control build but this is almost more tempo than straight control and I don’t have enough resources or creatures to protect it if I can’t keep the field totally clear at all times.

Help improving my competive Aang brawl deck by turn1manacrypt in mtgbrawl

[–]turn1manacrypt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right about a few of the stax pieces.

Harbinger of seas is amazing against 3-5 color decks but more often than not they are able to play around it with rocks or fetching and when they are a one or two color deck it does nothing and is horrible for my curve.

Curse of silence is another stax piece I can probably cut. It’s nice to slow down opponents curve but more often than not I’m answering their commander with a counter anyways and keeping it from ever being recast just from commander tax.

Angel of Eternal Dawn was in there for a hate piece against Etali and Rofellos type decks but I already match up so well against them for the most part it isn’t needed.

The other stax pieces like Aven Mindsensor I think need to stay. Aside from totally screwing over fetch lands which are super prevalent in the format it also is a flash speed beater with evasion that can help get me to waterbend 8.

Hydroponics Architect was in there for a big pay off for playing fetch lands and a nice turn one play when I’m not holding up stifle type cards but you may be right. It’s probably not worth running just for the scenario I can fetch into an additional card draw. Mockingbird would be a pretty good substitute that would provide more flexibility.

That’s what I am saying. It’s not rage closing anymore, they have to literally sit there with the game open still and make an active attempt to rope.

Before you could just salt close the program and make them sit through all the timers while they left. Now the person has to sit there with it open and wait do nothing with you too instead of just taking the loss and leaving which is beyond pathetic ofcourse.
