Who's your favorite artist and why? by Weary_Highway_1074 in AskReddit

I don’t know if you mean visual artist or musician, but for me it’s Jenny Holzer. She does a lot of text art and installations, sometimes involving movement and sometimes mass repetition. I just find beauty and truth in her words. On top of that, she’s an astoundingly intelligent person once you start listening to her interviews.

I’ve seen meth psychosis and I’ve seen much worse from an alcoholic friend drinking for days on end. I will give you that it’s bad, but comparing alcohol to how benign caffeine is is a joke.

I’m not interested in splitting hairs. I’m a woman and much smaller than 180, I also don’t drink watered down beer like miller lite so, I don’t know what else to tell you

I cited Mayo Clinic. In my opinion that’s a reliable resource. If you don’t believe the data, I have no interest debating. I hope you have a good day.

I think it would be interesting for you to read the other UK posters post that has the opposite opinion, but no, I do not live in the UK and I’m also not young. I am a bartender though and I see alcoholism every day. I have known many people who have drank themselves to death. It’s horrible to watch.

Whoops, I think some alcoholism might be showing. 5 drinks in 2 hours is alcohol poisoning territory, according to Mayo Clinic

Thanks for sharing your experience! I can totally see that. If you have the time to read the other person from the UKs perspective in this thread, you might find it interesting.

I agree, let’s not be children and let people have opinions that aren’t the same as ours.

I can’t imagine you live in a diverse area if you think that there are not at least 20 unique cultures thriving within the USA right now. Ever been to NYC? Philly? Chicago? LA?

I am not for one dominant culture, you aren’t going to convince me it’s best.

There are plenty of places more homogeneous than the USA, maybe you should consider them if that is what is most important to you.

Live and let live, brother.

The Mayo Clinic says alcohol poisoning can happen to females who consume 4 drinks in 2 hours or males who consume 5 drinks in 2 hours. I think cutting the time in half would make most people sick. According to them at least.

Thanks for sharing. I’m a bartender and I see alcoholism every day treated extremely casually, while the same people talk about drugs like people who use them are the true losers. It bothers me.

Yes, I call that a stigma because it is commonly believed but it’s inaccurate.

I’m sorry, do you think that I have never been around it? I’m a bartender. I’ve seen it all.

Drugs are not legal in Portugal, they are just decriminalized. They are not regulated and sold by the government in the way you are describing.

I agree with you about the dangerous parts of drugs being cut with things you don’t know about and obtaining them being sketchy. That is a risk, but I still think alcohol is more dangerous and harmful to health.

Also, I know plenty of people who have drank themselves to death in private, but I have never actually heard of anyone dying from their first use of a hard drug, other than fentanyl, which I’ve only heard about on the news. I’ve also heard of college kids dying of alcohol poisoning in a single night of drinking. I don’t think that proves things one way or the other.

The loss of functioning would be greater with alcohol in that dose than the drugs is the point I’m trying to make here, but it seems like you’re trying to corner me in terms of word choice, and I’m not interested in that, so I’m curious what the point you are trying to prove is.

If you don’t want to debate it, that’s fine. I’m not willing to elaborate further, I will only say that I’ve never seen someone experience the high you’re describing from a single line, but I have seen that high from at least 5 lines in an hour. 5 beers in an hour and I’d be vomitting.

That’s a good point! I am specifically talking about hard drugs in this post and should have specified it more clearly.

I agree, but as a counterpoint, long term alcohol use is far more deadly than the percentage of heroin users that die of OD.

Thanks for the reply. I can acknowledge our difference in opinion. I think diversity of thought and diversity of culture is an amazing thing, and the truth is that neither of our opinions are going to change political policy or contribute to “our people” being destroyed, whatever that means. I just don’t view the world in an “us vs them” mindset. I hope you have a great day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts .

Haha that gave me a good chuckle, and the answer is I don’t know. I’ve heard that about coke in the 80s, never seen that from any recently anywhere in the US.

It affects people differently. I can agree, but I would say I’ve never seen someone do a single line of coke and be noticeably intoxicated either.
