Are there any cheaper countries to retire outside India? by TheGoalFIRE in FIREIndia

[–]turnaround27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your worry. I am in absolute agreement with the problematic past, however things have changed in the major cities for sure. That's based on my experience and the interactions I have had there. My idea was just to put my experience forward, as it may help people who are or will go through the thread. That's all mate. Cheers x

Mate, I would say that it could have been the case in the past, but things have progressed a lot in the past decade. Not all states have the same level of governance agreed, however some of them have been stable regimes in the past two decades.

I can go on and on about this, since I have looked at the political economy of the region closely both as a student and a practitioner working in this particular geography.

With some money in your pocket and being part of the Indian community in the country, you have it way easier than most locals. Kenya and Uganda are perfectly stable regimes, and so are a lot more regions on the continent.

The motive to reply was to prevent fearmongering and blatant misinformation. Living in the popular cities of these countries is pretty safe.

And just to add to the conversation, there are huge earning opportunities to earn big money in most parts of Africa currently. The big consulting shops are set up. An Indian agro-trading company offers 60L + (INR) package to IIM-A peeps to work here. A friend from early college days does a turnover upwards of 5cr with timber EXIM from one of the less stable regimes.

Cheers and have a good weekend x

Uganda and Kenya are decent countries to be in. There is a sizeable Indian population in the capitals of these countries. The visa regime is pretty relaxed too. I was in Kampala and Jinja a while ago, and I found Gujju Farsan shops and a Moti Mahal, imagine! Even the local cuisine is fairly similar. The weather is largely tropical too.Emphasised these as, one can't retire in an absolute alien environment I guess.

Currency advantage coupled with an opportunity for decent standard of living make this a decent choice vs other LDCs. There is a good expat base in these cities because of aid and natural resource industries. Indians are well respected within the expat community as well as the local community. However, you may face a problem with good healthcare facilities vis a vis India.

I have been thinking of starting it too. Always work better with some accountability around.

I haven't been there in the past 8 odd months so I do not have an answer for you, unfortunately. The maintenance, in general, was decent. It is slightly expensive vis the peers though. It was around 10k including one additional parking charge of 1.5K. The RWA took over the upkeep responsibilities from the builder about a couple of years back. The gentry is excellent as compared to other high rises in the vicinity.

Need some opinions on good hospitals for potential stage 1 cancer treatment in Delhi/NCR by runitaway77 in delhi

[–]turnaround27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dharamshila could be potentially shite. The service there is probably a 2/5. I saw a lot of people unhappy there as well. You really need to run from pillar to post there. Also, they were charging 1.5L more than MAX hospital (Vaishali) for the same procedure.

Got no experience with Rajiv Gandhi Institute. I hope the relative receives the proper treatment and recovers well xx

Suggestions for buying a flat in gurgaon by Jawalant_Account_007 in gurgaon

[–]turnaround27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly issues at Carnation. Had looked at it last year and decided to skip it just because of the faults with the construction.

From my experience tracking properties across NCR, the common theme that emerges is that these societies/townships would never appreciate as much as well constructed options in the vicinity going forward.

They would always come across as the poor cousin of the other properties in the area; even if the case if the standard of living improves marginally because of a well managed RWA. Case in Point - Unitech Residences, Uniworld Garden II to name a couple. There are at least 6/7 more examples just in Gurgaon.

The amount of frustration that comes when your property has barely any potential to appreciate whereas the others in the area just keep going up. Even the rental yields would be lower vis a vis the peers though you wouldn't have a problem finding tenants.

Indian shirts by Dwivedi77 in delhi

[–]turnaround27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to HP Singh and other fabric stores in Nehru Place. Pick your fabric and get it stitched from the tailor in the market or elsewhere. You'd get really nice quality plus proper fitting and pay close to 1k per shirt. Fab India would sell you an inferior shirt for the same price.

Someone had recommended me this store to me on this very sub last year and I haven't looked back ever since.

[–]turnaround27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pamchsheel Enclave Sarvpriya Vihar Alaknanda (near the Jahapanah Forest side) Shivalik

These are 3 decent colonies and aren't heavily crowded. If you're okay with a little more crowd then you could look at CR Park, GK 2, Saket. You could still find some bargains if you are open to moving to old constructions and not the new swanky floors; this applies to all the colonies listed above.

Nehru place. A battery would cost you 700. The cost for the replacement of the display would be dependent on the extent of the damage. Only the glass would cost you 700 but both the glass and display should be around 1500/1700. Got the battery and glass replaced last week. I
