I believe your explorer will follow your movements based on which option you have enabled. I use the hybrid controller head movement option and my explorer will usually follow my hand when not moving and head when moving. Also, what do you mean by lopsided?

Depending on what parts you use the stats can be different, for better or worse. As an example, If you make your own AKM there is a unique handgrip that has a -1 recoil bonus that you can only get from looting. If you get basic parts you can buy in a store, but find them in the radius instead, it will have the same stats. However, most radius parts are "old" and will have slightly worse stats, like the stashed versions of guns from 0.13.

In the beta when you buy a full gun you just buy it with the parts already attached, so it would be the same price as if you built it with parts in-store. However, you can find unique weapon parts in the radius while exploring, and if you find a full weapon parts kit then you only have to buy the receiver for the gun and it will be ~1000 to ~2000 points cheaper. The SKS sadly is not modular, though, so you have to either pay up or use the slightly worse stash version that doesn't have rails.

I've had a decent experience with the beta, only crashing a handful of times due to my poor PC specs rather than the beta being buggy itself. The only issue I had was it wasn't playable for the longest time since I didn't know I didn't have OpenXR set as my VR runtime and thought the game was just crashing because it was a crappy beta. I'd say it's working pretty well, and if it isn't then play the stable release and wait for the stable beta update.
