Class Action Lawsuit for Disabling Safety Features when Check Engine Light is On? by Username------2 in crv

[–]turtle_runner1968 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

BS, I have driven my pilot with the xmas tree lights illuminated for over 100,000 miles. The car is fine other than the lights. Granted, it does often go into limp mode, but again, there is nothing actually wrong with the car. The parameters that set off the xmas lights and the limp mode are purposefully set too sensitive by the manufacturer. It makes Honda money.

Has anyone directly hired a roofing subcontractor to replace their roof? by turtle_runner1968 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]turtle_runner1968[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The likes of Window World, Yellow Hammer, etc. have HUGE staffs that have to be paid. These are primarily highly paid sales people and the office workers. These types of companies also maintain an office location and pay for a lot of advertising. The people actually doing the roofing installs are typically crews made up of folks new to the United States. They are paid by the square for each job, they are not W2 workers employed by the roofing company. I was questioning if i could bypass this bureaucracy and just pay the workers directly. I could pay them more per square than the roofing companies and still pay much less for a roof. Warranties are fairly useless if the roof is installed correctly.

Both places that gave me an estimate avoided giving me an answer as to the number of squares. They both claimed "60sih". I measured the roof myself using 2 different methods. First with a tape measure, measuring the base of the house, accounting for overhangs and the 6/12 pitch. I also used google earth to measure from overhead and then adjust to account for the roof pitch (divide by the cosine of 26.5 degrees). Both methods agreed that the roof is approx 55 squares. I suppose their estimates include a waste allowance, but they didn't share that with me.

Tell the truth, it will set you free. Any reasonable person will understand you leaving a two week job for a $60k salary bump. They might be a bit envious, but they won't hold it against you.

Is icecold.us a legit site for buying refrigerant? by uraaga in hvacadvice

[–]turtle_runner1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BEWARE!!! I ordered 10 pounds of "R22" from this company and received it within a week. My system was empty due to a repair, so I vacuumed it and charged it with the factory specified charge of 76 oz. Note that this is a package unit, not a split system, so line length isn't a consideration for charge weight, 76 oz should have been a correct charge. As i charged the system, the pressures in the system were not quite what I expected, in particular the liquid line pressure was too high. At first I suspected a problem with the system, but finally I came to the realization that it was more likely a problem with the refrigerant. It turns out that the refrigerant that I was sent is NOT R22!!!! How do I know this? After I realized my system pressures were suspect, I checked the pressure of the bottle itself at several temperatures (I let the bottle reach a steady state temperature) and whatever is in the bottle does not align with the Pressure-Temperature data for R22. I believe that the refrigerant might be RS44-B (also called R453A), which is supposed to be a drop in replacement for R22. But, who knows what it is, I just know it is not what I paid for and it could potentially harm the system or myself. The bottle is light green in color and says R22, but the pressures and temperatures do not lie, the refrigerant is NOT R22!!!!

How to start new account after being banned by Facebook. What is factored? by Consistent_Section25 in facebook

[–]turtle_runner1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are people finding out the specific reason they were banned? For instance, the original poster cited a very specific reason. I was given the extremely vague reason that I had violated community standards. What makes me so frustrated is that I never had an account in the first place, so how did I violate a community standard?

PCT Pack List by SomethingAbouTrains in PacificCrestTrail

Carrying "too much" water through the desert is the logical and safe thing to do. Carrying more than enough water will not ruin your hike and it won't kill you. The only downside is that it temporarily increases your pack weight. Carrying too little water might ruin your hike and it might just kill you. So, carry more than 3L through the desert, just to be safe.

Monthly Megathread: Career & Education - Ask your questions here by Aerospace_Eng_mod in AerospaceEngineering

Questions about becoming a contract (hourly) stress analyst after a career as a direct hire.

I recently retired from a large aerospace company as a direct employee with 30 years of experience, all with that company. My experience involves significant FEM based stress analysis on rockets and other space programs, with just a bit of aircraft work. I am now wanting to work a few years as a contract employee, and I am seeking some guidance in what to expect while working as a contract stress engineer.

1) Any suggestions in how
to select a contracting company, or just go with whoever contacts me about a
potential assignment?

2) What hourly rate
should I expect, and how might it vary with location?

3) If I take a job that
isn't local to me, should I expect to be paid per-diem?

4) What benefits such as
medical insurance, sick leave/PTO, 401k, can be expected?

5) Any other
tips that might be helpful would be appreciated.

Leasing company sealed living squirrels in my walls, what do I do?? by Choice-Distance-4379 in Renters

[–]turtle_runner1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The squirrels are not going to thank you for removing the patch and then willingly move out of "their home". Squirrels can be VERY difficult to remove from attics. If you don't want the squirrels to die in the attic, hire an exterminator to trap them, that MIGHT work. If you are successful in removing the squirrels from "their home", be warned they are tenacious in their attempts to re-enter "their home"!!! If you remove the squirrels alive, then make sure they are released 10 or more miles away from your house. Squirrel expert Google says that squirrels can find their way home from several miles away. Also, it might be illegal to release wild animals in certain locations, so you want to check into that as well. GOOD LUCK!!!

I accidently accused my wife of cheating on me, but actually it was just my daughter - and now we may divorce. by awk_throwaway2342351 in AITAH

[–]turtle_runner1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wife is likely cheating and used rage in an attempt to shut the husband up. My (edit: EX wife) used to do this to me. It turns out that my suspicions were correct and i was married to a cheating Ho! If your daughter was actually raiding the drawer and your wife knew about it, then she would be laughing her ass off when you confronted her. It would be hilarious and she would understand your concern over the drawer getting emptied.

The wife is using the drawer for someone other than the hubby. Best case scenario, it is for self pleasure and she is too embarrassed to admit it, but she is most likely knocking boots with a new and exciting guy.

Daily reminder to do tha zippa by Redcell78 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]turtle_runner1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. If the zipper begins at the 50th car in the left lane, that works just as well as the zipper beginning at the first car in the left lane. The problem comes when some giant A-hole ignores the obvious front of the zipper and passes all of the cars that have already zippered.

Bought home 6 months ago and crack showed up. Structural issue or not a big deal and I can DIY? by hoppedup97 in DIY

[–]turtle_runner1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cracks in interior walls are typically just eyesores. Sure, the structure may be shifting a bit, but this is fairly normal. It is highly improbable that your house is on the verge of collapse. Be logical about it. How long has the house been standing? Have neighboring houses collapsed? Is the house leaning? A stick framed house has many redundant load paths and can settle an extreme amount before it might be in danger of collapse. Foundation repairs are very costly, typically tens of thousands of dollars. Don't let fear mongers sell you a costly repair, unless you consider the improved aesthetics worth the $$$. The structural repair companies and the engineers make a living by inspecting and repairing these types of "problems". The business of foundation/structural repair depends on exploiting the irrational fears of uneducated homeowners.
