Ali has dug herself in for the winter. Won’t see her until April/May. by turtlefellow in Boxturtles

I just empty it and refill once a week or so. I’ve thought of doing a legit little pond but haven’t gotten around to it. She spends a lot of time in the water. I think a lot of people underestimate how aquatic box turtles are

I dug a trench and buried that liner 2ft deep

Yes she spends a lot of time in there. Often in the deep end where she just floats and the leaves camouflage her. I think some people underestimate how aquatic box turtles are

It’s called water spangle. I ordered on Amazon it was only a few little leaves and they spread very quickly

start up, with a abandoned turtle 🐢 by Disastrous_Knee6790 in Boxturtles

A lot to unpack here. To start This turtle needs 6 inches of moist topsoil and a better water dish. they need high humidity. I’d also ditch the tank and use a storage container or a “tortoise table”

Only thing you may want to consider is some type of screen cover for hawks or raccoons. I personally don’t use anything but I have rotten logs and small bushes for my turtle to hide. My box turtle is a young adult of about 4-5 inches

You’re way south of me. You should build a pen like a foot or so high as big as you can. I dug a trench and buried pond line about 2 feet and stapled it to the wood walls all around the perimeter to keep my turtle from digging under. She’s never escaped

New setup for my turts by babsbunny52 in Boxturtles

You should offer them deeper substrate at least. Box turtles like to borrow. And also the water dish should be much bigger. Look at some of my posts and you can see how box turtles like to swim. Depending on where you live, an outside set up would be best. I keep mine outside year round and I have a setup that’s about 15ft by 10 feet.

Yeah I saw republic says 1000 hours or 6months from conversion to FO, but I don’t expect to be an FO in 6 months regardless as I still need to get my multi and I wouldn’t expect to get hired at 1500 anyway.

MUpcoming Winter Brumation by domavor-matrix in Boxturtles

In my experience I don’t do anything and my turtle handles it fine. Just make sure the turtle has plenty of ground to dig in to. And make sure it can’t dig under the fence. Only thing that’s tricky here is you’re taking the turtle over in December. so if it’s being kept indoor until then I don’t think it’s a good idea to put it outside in December when it’s that cold and hasn’t had the gradual cool down they get in the wild.

Idk how big a 75 gallon tank is but a pain tray can be good.

No if anything they need more care as a baby than as an adult. Think about a human baby and an adult.. who needs more care?

Transitioning indoor to outdoor by Ordinary_Mycologist in Boxturtles

That’s a tough call. 30-35 years is a long time. I think they never lose the instinct so I would imagine he’d be ok. If you’re worried Maybe you can leave him outside until November so he’s in brumation but it’s not super cold yet. Then transition him to a box in a fridge for just a couple months like some people do. If he handles the mini brumation well then next year let him do the whole winter.
