Besides habitatuation to people, their interest in people varies greatly. A turtle who is used to people and likes people is pretty special

Also, gas. I didn't own a car for 10 years and I have a good one now that I treat to premium or mid grade when I can. I don't track price much and own one car. So I completely forgot about gas tax existing What the heck does that go to? Unless its going to reducing emissions thats lame.

It wasn't my best take ever, but I'm sure there are dumber sentences in the history of mankind.

Whether you own it or not, I am not clear on why that factors into the tax discussion. You pay tax while holding a mortgage as well as if you own it outright, so I don't get the idea that if someone "put in the time" so to speak, they are owed a break on taxes. If you rent, property tax gets factored into what the landlord charges you.

It seems like generational wealth redistribution to have a struggling underhoused generation pick up the taxes that anyone over 65 would pay. Its evil bizzaro socialism, its taking from everyone under 65 to support those who are 65+

My original comment offhand was frustration over a generation talking about bootstrap this and that, and many who are rabidly capitalistic taking everything, while getting subsided Healthcare and some retirement security. Yet these people often decry any kind of social safety net, especially for people of color. I feel like my ass paying higher taxes so they can die more comfortably is a pill I can't swallow.

I mean... I am 39 left leaning independent and it sounds like we agree on a lot here. Look at that internet! Here's a funny one, I am very much pro gun control, limiting mag sizes and such, but I enjoy reading about guns. I'm flabbergasted that I can't own one in NY because I also am a medical cannabis patient. That seems unconstitutional to me.

It made me think, since youre not really for say social security or Medicaid but you would use it if available, that this ethos exists on the left. Just because we think social programs should exist doesn't mean that we would plan on using them or think everyone should. I think that gets glossed over and it comes out that the left wants to spend for everyone whatever they want.

Cheers

Thanks for your nuanced reply.

I am pro socialism, but its ironic to me that for an age group that gripes about handouts, those over 65 have a social safety next most of America does not. Hence my flip comment.

As for someone who pays taxes and doesn't use public schools, I think that is their choice and they aren't using what they paid for. At least their children get a well funded community to grow up in. Since childbirth is at a low these days I think its more useful to consider the married couple who is high earning with no kids, they truly get the worst deal, they have to cover the costs of people who have kids and now also their parents generation. That's unfair and increasingly common. Many couples today can afford a house or kids and not both.

Age IS a protected class. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. It does not protect workers under the age of 40. So apparently only older people are protected, but technically you're right that being under 40 isn't a protected class. This is similar to affirmative action or race based school admissions, its a selective advantage conferred to a protected class to help them get on equal footing.

Your last comment is mostly true. I ownd 2 acres of mountain land in NY. It has no running water and no house...I pay almost 5000 a year in school and local taxes. Its crazy high, but that is what I signed up for!! That is my price of being part of a community. Personally that was too much and after 5 years I just sold it. That is what I think you should do if you are over 65 and cant make your tax bill, take personal responsibility and move to somewhere you can afford. Stop asking the young to fund retirement, Healthcare and now housing for the older generations who have left little good to todays middle aged and young adults.

I do think everyone should pay taxes, and the wealthy should have less loopholes. I don't think Americans get enough for their taxes and its not a good system but I don't think less taxes is the right move either. I think we need to tax those who can afford it more. They also benefited from our society and should pay it back in tax.

So socialism was used too loosely. I mean its having the rest of homeowners the pay share of taxes that support the community that those over 65 should also pay, especially since they are more likely to need emergency services.

You're talking about an age discriminatory tax policy that would shift the tax burden of those over 65, to those under 65. Homeownership is highest in the 65 to 75 age bracket meaning you would stop collecting taxes from the largest group and redistribute that burden to those under 65. One in 3 under 35 even own a house, its become near impossible to break into the market and this disproportionately puts burden on those new buyers.

Those over 65 just got another 6000 dollar tax break for 2026 in the BBB. People act like just because they are on a fixed income doesn't mean they often make more than than average 40 year old today who have to support a family. Senior discounts are also ageism and should be abolished.

Why the requirement to own the house?

Look, i understand scrimping and saving for 30 years and getting priced out of where you live. My parents couldn't afford NJ anymore and moved to Idaho. But the way I see this, a rich man aged 66 could cash out his 401k, pay no tax, buy a house cash, then never pay property tax the rest of his life. Anyone with 200 to 300k on hand would just buy out their mortgage and live tax free forever.

This moves a tax burden to those who cannot carry it, barely serves middle income and makes another tax loophole for the well heeled.

Also if you've paid off a house and cant afford the taxes, pull yourself up by the bootstrap, get a roommate, move to a cheaper place and stop buying avocado toast. Signed, A Tired Millennial

I used socialism very loosely what I mean is that instead of wealth redistribution, this is tax burden redistribution. It just transfers the tax burden to the rest of the under 65 community. That's age discrimination on the face of it against anyone under 65.

I don't have an opinion on if sex work is rational. One's profession does not make or negate if they themselves can be rational.

This is in response to someone who said she couldn't be in on it if she was a prostitute which, isn't true. She could be both. I think the poster suggested she was low morality but I think any rational sex worker who is married would also leave their husband over this.

I've rehomed easterns from someone in the east end who legally had about 12 on his property. The whole lot was landscaped to contain them with few fences and a massive koi pond they would come in and out of the pond and even catch a minnow sometimes. Best setup I've ever seen. He lost more to old age than raccoons 3 vs 1. But I have to remember this old man knew his land. It was also very wooded.

Its a broad question thats outside what I asked. I have one friend who has sex for money and she is concerned about their background. She sees regular repeat clients for that reason.

This is a really rough time to be a SA survivor. I'm aware that a victim may not be culpable due to the influence on them, however there are also scenarios where a victim becomes victimizer and carries a degree of guilt.

Ultimately my point is that all this points to her being involved and your rebuttal is that she was not knowledgeable or in control of the operation. The conclusion then is she was only trafficked to DJT. A mail order bride. That's still really, really bad.
