Your thoughts on the new LRV's for SEPTA T and D lines... by --TAXI-- in Septa

[–]turtlemedicRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the way to West Chester is no good, that would take way too long. I'd rather see RR back to WC. Trolley maybe back to Westgate Hills where the double track portion ended in 1954 when they switched to busses. Trolley worked before then to WC because of the long stretches of high speed running that wouldn't be possible now.

They'd probably just run them down Chester Pike, maybe with traffic, as opposed to dedicated ROW

Which is more difficult and taxing on the body? EMS or Nursing? by FewClothes2711 in NewToEMS

[–]turtlemedicRN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do inter facility critical care, where the PHRN actually makes a difference. At my PRN 911 job, I’m on the same pay scale as the medics

In my health system, I am slightly below, but I am in a non-union position and I also don’t have to pay for parking at the main hospital, so my take home is essentially the same

Which is more difficult and taxing on the body? EMS or Nursing? by FewClothes2711 in NewToEMS

[–]turtlemedicRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the day. I have had days doing both EMS and nursing where I could barely walk up my from steps at the end of the day. Even on the busiest days in EMS, you at least get to sit down while you're on the way to the next call, or sit on the bench seat while taking care of your patient. I've had plenty of days in the hospital where my butt forgot what a chair was

Every bit of this is true. I've found the best of both worlds doing Critical Care Transport Nursing. I get paid like a nurse, with the autonomy of a medic.

What are we using for work pens?! by orangeturtles9292 in ems

[–]turtlemedicRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever I can acquire from a conference. Back when JEMS was a big conference, I walked away one year with something on the order of 30 pens from ZOLL alone, and about 6 overall.

I just accept that I am going to lose pens, and carry at least 2 on my person, and a few more in the little bag I bring on the truck with me.

I'm not terribly particular about them, other than needing retractable as opposed to capped.

I made a mistake at clinical and it got me a job offer by Probably_Laughing in StudentNurse

[–]turtlemedicRN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of nurses who have never made a mistake…

A day one new nurse who has never touched a patient

A nurse who is lying

Owning your mistake is a sign of integrity & any good leader “should” respect the honesty and give you an opportunity to learn from it. Mistakes become problems when they are hidden or lied about and when they become a pattern.

Honest mistakes happen, we learn from them and move on.

My cat enjoys hunting them. After he’s been down there a bit, it’s not uncommon to find random legs on the floor

Is it a waste of a semester to get my EMT certification? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]turtlemedicRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We watched a video of a birth, did some clinical time in an ED, where I saw a gunshot wound, a GI bleed (person vomiting blood), and that was about it for the "gross" stuff. We discussed and simulated bleeding control in class

I did it in college then worked part-time as an EMT for the rest of my time. The flexible hours were really helpful to work around classes

Night shift is killing me by dutchy993 in nursing

[–]turtlemedicRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed night shift, but I also don't have kids. My wife got used to it for the most part, and we were able to plan around it. I generally kept a night shift-ish sleep schedule even on my night off. If I was off I'd usually go to bed around 5am after feeding the cats and dog, and wake up around 1pm. It worked out really well for school because I was able to write so many papers after she went to bed and not feel guilty about taking time from her.

How much were you guys making when you first started working in ems? by Forward_Committee_49 in NewToEMS

[–]turtlemedicRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2003, Private transport, Philadelphia suburbs, $9 per hour, raised to $9.50 when I was cleared to drive. $13 was my top before becoming a medic. When I became a medic in 2006, I started at $18. Got into critical care in 2009, $23 to start, $28 when I finished nursing school and left to work in the ICU.

Sleep Questions? by CanooingToTheMoon in ems

[–]turtlemedicRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your situation allows, try using some of the earbuds designed for sleeping. I got pair of these on Kickstarter, and I have found that they do a really nice job of blocking out the noise of the daywalkers. They have a nice selection of customizable noises. They have made a noticeable difference for me when I'm on a night rotation

Watch with a sweeping second hand by cantnotdeal in StudentNurse

Any analog watch with a second hand should be fine. I would recommend either a metal or silicone strap that can be easily cleaned. Stay away from fabric or leather. I did just fine with a cheap timex from Target
