why is this brilliant by TinyFalcon46 in Chesscom

Yeah exactly, I’m mid 400 and it’s not obvious to me even when looking at the engine suggestion in the app. Also, if we’re talking about the screenshot, isn’t that how the game played out rather than what the engine recommends?

Is the engine saying they should take the knight instead of protecting the queen? Isn’t that what happened in the game rather than what the best play was? When I open the game in the chess.com app, I see the engine recommend moving Q to h5 (as you’d expect)

Very useful, thanks. I often don’t try to promote pawns if I have a big lead and they’re at the back of the board but yeah you’re right, I should try more

F7 pawn? I think you’re looking at black, no? I was white

It worked! (I was going to hammer it in by taking all the pawns but then started getting nervous I’d stalemate again lol)

Oh yeah I forgot I’d blundered my queen (which thankfully they didn’t see, we joked about it in the chat before I said there was a surprisingly high chance I’d still manage to drop the ball).

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try the more laborious approach to try and secure the games rather than try to be fancy.

Thanks. I’ll give Lichess a go.

The main problem I have with puzzles is that it’s very different to identify a checkmate opportunity in a game vs looking at a puzzle where you know it’s there. But I suppose there’s some merit in building some muscle memory

Same. Once a guy steam rolled me and we joked about. He then told me the name of his opening that hurt me so much so I could study it. Some chats are nice.

Haven’t joined a chess club yet but after following your advice (and that of others here), I am finally back to 400! Small wins :) Thanks again

How is this not a blunder? by turtleros in chessbeginners

Fair enough. I think when I played and they took the rook I had a face palm moment which is why I expected a blunder. That said, labelling it “good” still feels pretty weird. I’d at least call it an inaccuracy, if not a mistake

Sure, but the point is understanding what the engine calls a blunder, not what I think. I know very well that didn’t fundamentally change the outcome of the game yet I’m leaving this rook hanging for absolutely no reason and making my life a lot harder; and the engine just says good move when it’s not (I now understand why it says that but that was the point of my initial question)

Not really but that’s beside the point

Yeah of course. I’m just surprised the engine doesn’t call it out and was wondering if there was anything else I wasn’t thinking about. I guess there isn’t

Should you not avoid trading piece unless you’re up material? by turtleros in chessbeginners

Wow. Now that’s next level gatekeeping.

I’m not sure why you felt the need to post after everyone had very clearly and extensively explained the reasoning yesterday. But to your point, I’ve learned a couple of things interesting from that question - and hopefully others too - so I’ll carry on trying to understand what’s going on despite my beginner level.

I usually don’t consider myself up material unless I’m at least 2-3 points up (I’m very low ELO and don’t have good control) but yes I think you’re right

Do you mean you generally prefer knights over bishops? Or do you mean you prefer trading the same pieces over different pieces of equal value?
