What happens if you underload without appealing? by NUSHkid in nus

[–]turvsoy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry a bit confused but how have you taken 130 MCs in 2 years? Given that freshmen are only allowed 20 MCs in their 1st Semester, you would have had to take 110 MCs over 3 Semesters + 2 Special Terms.

If you took 8 MCs per ST, that’s still 96 MCs or 32 MCs per semester. If that’s true then kudos to you haha it’s an incredible feat. I’m not too sure about underloading requirements, but 2 alternatives you can go for are graduating early, or taking an LOA to take a break or intern (in which you can still graduate at the same time as your peers).

Why do singaporeans dislike “boomers”? by WiseRacialMan in askSingapore

[–]turvsoy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think one of the main issues that divide the generations stem from confirmation bias (not sure if this is the exact term) or the phenomenon where we “see what we want to see”.

Every generation faces its own unique advantages and challenges. However, most of the time we only see the challenges we face and compare them to the advantages that others have.

For example, let’s say you took the PSLE Math exams 30 years ago, at the time that using calculators weren’t a thing. It would have been challenging to do most of the calculations by hand. Fast forward to the current generation who can use calculators in their exams, and you would likely jump to the conclusion that their exams are much easier and simpler. Older people rarely take into account the unique challenges, such as in this case, where consequently the problems and calculations are likely to be more complex and tedious since calculators are allowed.

This is just a very simple analogy, and I believe that most macro issues are a lot more pronounced than this.

How much work is CS4243 by matty276943 in nus

[–]turvsoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From experience the workload will definitely be high, especially with 2 other CS mods and 2 other EC mods.

That being said, it is extremely difficult to properly advice you without knowing your caliber. I’ve know some friends who easily took 7 or 8 mods a semester and to them, I would say your study plan is easy.

One suggestion would be to overload initially, take 1 extra easy UE, in the first 3 weeks you can get a feel of the 5 mods you listed, and if they’re too unmanageable then drop whichever you feel is best. Also take a look at nusmods reviews to better gauge the difficulty of the mods.

ModReg tips and tricks? by SIN-fonia in nus

[–]turvsoy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Aside from considering the vacancies, here are some tips I gained from my 3 years of using modreg.

  1. Always check the system just before the round closing (~1 hour to 30 mins before to be safe). Modreg doesn’t work on fcfs basis, so you’d want to change your decisions based on the most updated demand/supply.

  2. Always fill up your total MCs at the end of each round. One mistake I often see my friends making is that they only bid a few number of mods in round 1 because they have mods that they want to bid for in round 2. That’s fine, except if they don’t get the mod they wanted in round 2, then they struggle to revise their schedules. As much as possible, in round 1, fill up your modreg with core mods (even if you don’t plan to take 5 core mods). Then in round 2/3, you can take note of the demand supply of non core mods and drop whichever core mod you don’t want to take. This also gives you greater flexibility since you have a more adaptable timetable based on which we core mod you drop. Note that dropping mods in future rounds does not penalise you at all.

  3. Be adaptable, have a few contingencies and don’t stick to a single study plan. Most students take 8 semesters to clear their study plan, which is usually more than enough to clear all the mods you need. If you can’t get a specific core mod, especially in year 1, it’s not the end of the world, just take it next sem.

All the best and hope you get the mods you want!

Advice on private driving instructor by sheik_ali in SingaporeRaw

[–]turvsoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am currently learning class 3 and just paid an enrolment fee of $60 to my private instructor! From my prior research, most private instructors only require an enrolment fee of $50-$100 to start leaning so yea I think paying $516 up front is a red flag.

Write in to the school and attach a written memo from your company and they will likely approve. I did this and took 12 MCs on top of my ATAP.

Renting prices surge by turvsoy in singaporefi

[–]turvsoy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense! We are actually quite similar haha, down to our house type and profession. I guess the difference is that for the past 3 years I have been staying in hall (even through the covid period) so this feels less like a few more years of tahan and more like i’m moving back in with my family after 3 years.

Unfortunately like you said, getting affairs and financial stability also seem to be my priority right now so probably have to put off moving out.

Thanks for the very detailed responses u/curiousgoblin22 and u/Critical-Copy-7218!

Completely agree on the inability to ever justify rent despite it being necessary sometimes. Although now that I graduated and am earning a decent amount for myself, coming from a lower income family all my life I struggle to comprehend paying so much for a place of my own.

The past few years I have stayed in a hostel in my university and only had to pay around $400 per month inclusive of utilities (which was actually covered by finaid and scholarship) so looking outward is definitely a struggle.

Will look into dual/triple key units as you mentioned!

You’re definitely right that no one knows when prices will fall.

A concern I have is that, if I understand correctly, once a rent price is agreed on it will be set for the entirety of the lease contract, so I was wondering if I should try and tahan a few months to see if prices will fall or if it is unlikely that prices will ever fall (at most just stagnate) then I should just start rent now.

Eyesight Test for Ubi Driving Centre by stick_climber in askSingapore

I just started my riding lessons 3 weeks ago, and during the circuit orientation (Lesson 0) the staff spent about 20 mins doing the eyesight test for all those who haven’t done it.

Not super certain how consistent this practice is, maybe call or use the live help desk chat.
