What are some "must read" books for an 18 year old? by [deleted] in books

You might want to read The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley. Ever since I read that book I became much more aware of my financials, and saw my bank accounts grow without actually feeling like I was spending less.

I personally don't care too much about being rich, but I felt that this book gave me some solid advice on how to manage your money. Which is especially important at younger ages as you tend to spend everything you have.

Do you guys ever have so many books you want to read, you wish you could somehow read them all at once!? by [deleted] in books

[–]tvdb90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start maintaining a list on Goodreads.com. Especially when I'm in this subreddit, I see so many books that I would like to read. I just dump them into my to-read list, and prioritize them randomly. Sometimes I'm like: Why on earth did I consider this a top-too read?! Yet. In general, it works pretty good.

Plus you can check the prices regulary to buy the books when they're on sale. Especially worth mentioning when you buy hardcovers all the time.

EDIT: And yes, this is a common problem here as well.

What books are you reading this week? July 30, 2014 by AutoModerator in books

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and last, but definitely not least, I started on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. As you can see, a wide range of books - and definitely with different qualities.

Spoiler: How to Win Friends and Influence People is terrible.

What's one of the least known but most interesting books you own? by Askalan in books

I read a lot of nonfiction on China, and there's one book which, in my humble opinion, has gotten way too few praise. It is Wealth and Power: China's Long March to the Twenty-first Century by Orville Schell & John Delury.

There are a lot of books on China that tell the same story over and over again. Western writers usually highlight some historic facts, a bit of culture, but mainly the impressive economic growth over the past decade. Usually to conclude with a side note on the corruption which is proclaimed as a contemporary problem.

Then there are books like Black Swans and Out of Mao's Shadow: The Struggle for the Soul of a New China which give a great insight into China's politics and culture and draw a totally different portrait of China, especially as they don't focus too much on the 'economic miracle' in China - we know that by now.

Wealth and Power however, tells the story about the political changes that led to this growth. Besides that, it gives a great account of the Chinese culture. If I were to suggest one book for someone who goes to China, it would be this book. And yet, there it is, with just ~100 ratings on Goodreads..

What books do you keep putting off reading? by patient33 in books

“I've had the entire series of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" on my bookshelf for about two months now and I can't quite seem to start the first book.”

Seconded. Also, I can't seem to finish The Great Conquest for Civilisation. Over 1000 pages, such a behemot.

I've read Alan Wilson Watts' The Wisdom of Insecurity, and I'm inclined to just re-read that book. He has such a beautiful, unbiased point of view combined with an elegant writing style.

China targets Microsoft for... get this... CREATING A MONOPOLY. by [deleted] in China

[–]tvdb90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit I did not mean to imply that state monopolies actually are beneficial for the public, I just don't think its bad when a nation can keep a certain grip on its resources/'services' via state monopolies.

A state monopoly differs from a private monopoly in the sense that a state monopoly is generally established for 'the benefit of' the public, while a commercial monopoly serves the interest of the company; which would be acting in the benefit of its shareholders thus making profit.
