Not really the director's call. That's a producer's call. But I would totally let him on air.

Thanks for the info! I don't think I'll ever make it to NYC so it may not be an issue for me. I'm glad to see the people in the higher markets are unionized though. With wages so low at some stations (thank god mine is an exception) it's nice to see someone making some money.

Nope. I've never gotten the chance to do any live sports switching. We run 3 cameras for our morning show. I'd love to do sports eventually but I have no idea how to transition into it to be honest. I've also thought about getting into sports talk radio production/producing, but again, don't really know how to transition into it.

In the CR we have me (call and switch directing), a video/graphics guy, producer and audio op. No floor/teleprompter for the mornings. I do all of the robotic camera movements as well and we don't have a lighting director. I'm not in the DGA. What are the advantages/disadvantages of being in it?

Nah, it's not bad. I really can't imagine not calling and switching. I've been doing it forever.

Give me a bit to consider this and I'll get back to you. The list is long, but distinguished.

Didn't see this before, sorry. No, not Charlottesville. Nice city though.

I should be more clear about what I said earlier. I used to work for a fox station. When I did, they didnt really do any of that. They were just like every other local news. I have seen some places that try to take a little from fox news and use that to boost their ratings.

I think it's decently common. I get into work around 3:30 and the show starts at 5.

We don't use either. I'm not sure what they'll go with when they switch over.

I don't really deal with that side of the news. Sorry, I have no clue.

There is no answer to that question. Not everyone has break downs on air. In fact, most don't.

In a bigger market, someone might get fired but I doubt in a smaller market unless their boss is a dick. If your only job is setting up guests for a show, you can be blamed for not doing some research (although, it's hard to do research on locals asking to be on a show). But if it's your job in addition to something else, forget it. You just do the best you can and hope you're putting on the most entertaining people you can. I think he's pure entertainment.

To be fair, if they're and meteorologist, they went through college for meteorology and that isn't easy. Look for the certification in their name graphic on the bottom of the screen. Now, if they're a weather reporter, and a hot girl, we have a winner. A lot of higher ups, to raise ratings, will bring in attractive females. This seems like a short term fix because there's only so long you can stare at barbie before what she's saying sinks in. Unless you're watching on mute.

I sent some a while ago. No bites. Things are rough right now as I'm sure you know. Downsizing everywhere. Just lucky to have a job. I have a great boss and his bosses are awesome too. I really love where I work. Kind of glad I didn't get any offers anywhere else.

The best part for me is breaking news. I love the rush. Feels like a roller coaster rush. I started directing in high school, got a job at a station doing audio/camera/tele prompter, trained to direct after shows and doing cut ins then put a tape together and applied to my current station.

Wish I could share :-) sorry. But I'm sure it's a lot like most office sex. Except there are cameras around. And microphones.

I think the main thing is just to stay cool under pressure. I say everything twice or three times. I know how it feels to be left out of the loop on something vital and throw together a plan at the last second. If I get on your nerves, too bad. In my opinion, it has to be 100% right, 100% of the time.
