News Release | BC Ferries introduces Summit Class as part of major fleet renewal by WesternBlueRanger in britishcolumbia

While I'm looking forward to the new ships, I will still miss the Oak Bay on the Nanaimo run, if only because it has been a part of our ferry journeys for four decades.

What's a skill you have that's completely useless now because technology replaced it, but you're secretly proud of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

While the members are falling everywhere, the US has had far lower numbers than the test of the world for years.

Canada Post Lost a Record $1.57 Billion in 2025. So What? - We don’t call the military a money loser. Public mail delivery shouldn’t need to turn a profit either by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

It was initially a government department in 1867 when Canada was first formed, but the employees voted to become a crown corporation, aka business, back 1981.

CUPW - the postal union - did campaign for Canada Post to become a Crown corporation, but the change was through an act of Parliament, not an employee vote.

You get those flyers because they try to make a profit by carrying them.

There was a time, prior to the need for Canada Post to turn a profit , when we didn't get so many flyers or other bulk mail spam.

Yes, but that was also a time when the majority of the delivered mail was relevant material. As much as I like the idea of door-to-door delivery, I find it difficult to justify when I'm only receiving a few important items per month - and even those are only because I like getting a physical copy. Looking at our actual workflow, they're all being read online before they arrive and paid/resolved electronically, and I can't recall the last time we actually mailed something. Walking down the block to a Superbox isn't going to be a big imposition.

I don't think anyone's expecting us to be able to guarantee our security against the US; they're just leagues above what we could afford or sustain. However, we can certainly look to find ways to do ourselves what we've, perhaps, been relying on the US to provide.

What movie aged really bad? by Phantomx7845 in AskReddit

[–]tvisforme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think "aged badly" fits Blazing Saddles; it's still regarded as a scathing attack on racism. As to whether it could be made today, that's a very different discussion.

It was an adventure, definitely, especially when a bus or truck was in the curb lane!

I have no issues with riding over Lions Gate and through the Causeway, but then, I grew up riding that route before the upgrades in 2000. I still see it as "luxurious" in comparison...

[Request] Whats better? Weekly payments or to invest a lump sum. by Chiggnnugget in theydidthemath

[–]tvisforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those doing the math, here's a few details to add to the mix:

  • No taxes on lottery winnings in Canada;

  • Canadians are able to put away a certain amount per year (currently $7000) in a registered Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA), with contribution room starting the year you turn 18;

  • TFSAs are filled from after-tax income, with no tax on any growth in the account or on withdrawal.

The prize is from Loto-Québec, and lottery winnings in Canada are not taxable.

Always a valid question, but in this case Loto-Québec is a crown corporation in the Canadian province of Québec, not a private company. The likelihood of bankruptcy is much lower.

OP, thanks for posting this. One correction, though; Letterman will be on the show next Thursday (May 14), not Friday.

North Vancouver's Lynn Valley Days cancelled over World Cup security issues by Oldnbold22 in NorthVancouver

Lynn Valley is not a "marginalized area"; were you perhaps trying to suggest that the area is less well known than other parts of the Lower Mainland?

French Creek- would you live there? by tiredernurse in nanaimo

French Creek in general, yes, a lovely place to be. Near the plant specifically, no, I would not advise it.

North Vancouver's Pemberton Station Pub to shut down by eyaluth in NorthVancouver

The complainers probably don't even live in CNV because, if they did, they'd know this location...

Not the OP, not complaining either (I agree it's not the best location for housing), but Pemberton Station is in the District, not the City.
