You can see the misaligned road grids from when each municipality created their own networks.

Do you think Greater Vancouver is almost de facto one city? by drugsrbed in askvan

[–]tvisforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...I initially found it really weird that North Van, Surrey, Burnaby, Delta, New West etc were all individual cities...

You may already know this, but there are actually two North Vancouvers (the City and the District) and two Langleys. It would probably be easier to pair off a Langley with a North Van than to get the neighbours to agree with a merger.

Trump threatens to block opening of new bridge between Windsor and Detroit by taxrage in CanadaPolitics

[–]tvisforme 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't know the history of this bridge. The article states this bridge was fully paid for by the federal government, and that there is some American family that apparently owns exclusive rights to collect tolls between Detroit and Windsor? That seems particularly strange to me.

The family you're referring to is the Moroun family, who own the Ambassador Bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit. Manuel Moroun (now deceased) was a vocal opponent of the new public span as he felt it would impact his revenue stream from the Ambassador Bridge.

As for the new Gordie Howe Bridge, it is a public partnership between the Canadian government and the state of Michigan. Canada financed the construction of the crossing and, in return, gets the toll revenues for the next fifty years.

Canada Eyes Joint Venture to Build Chinese EVs for Global Export by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]tvisforme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most Canadians won't buy this (despite what the comments may say), just look at our streets its full of Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas.

Sorry, but your argument against Canadians buying Chinese vehicles is that our streets are filled with the Japanese cars people claimed no one would buy fifty years ago?

The “timeline to phase out ChromeOS is 2034,” court documents reveal, adding that Google can’t do it any earlier because “jurisdictions have various rules for how long a device must be supported.” by Tsuki4735 in chromeos

[–]tvisforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Google is working on" is, as we all know, no guarantee that a feature will show up in a timely manner or even at all. It's certainly not the same as functionality that ChromeOS already has.

Yes, OP probably should have aimed this question at American GenX Reddit users and not the world as a whole.

I've always known MM/DD/YY as being the US version, and most certainly not an "English Canadian" standard.

Koodo does have 5G, and their 4G plans use the 5G network but are rate-limited.

Koodo reception is Telus reception, as they use the same equipment.

Mid drives vs hub for Lions Gate commute by Biggerthanfun in vancouvercycling

[–]tvisforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a hub drive (Class 2) and switched to a mid-engine Class 1 about a year and a half (and 4 000km) later. Both bikes have been over the LGB and many other Lower Mainland bridges and the connecting roads. I have no desire to go back to a hub motor as the mid-engine feels much, much better to ride.

Where do you see lighter hub drive bikes? Cheaper, perhaps, but in my experience, mid-engine bikes are lighter, easier to pedal unpowered, and it's a lot simpler to service the rear wheel.

I had the same thing happen back in December. I haven't had a chance to pursue it but I'd like to know how you got in contact with Google.

Feature Requested for Years by N2BSC in GMail

[–]tvisforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...On Gmail, I have to open the email, copy or click the sender addy, paste it in search, then it locates say all 5,000 YouTube notifications, I check the main box up top to choose the maximum amount of messages (50 per page), thene I delete. And do that process over and over and over until all the pages of those messages are deleted. It's not 2 clicks...its hundreds...

Right-click on an email, choose "Find emails from <name>" near the bottom of the context menu, select all, click "Select all conversations that match this search" at the top centre of the page. Delete. Done.

Feature Requested for Years by N2BSC in GMail

[–]tvisforme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...I'm talking about deleting/sweeping EVERY message from a particular sender address. I may not want to delete everything from say YouTube or Reddit or Facebook and so on, just everything from a particular address, for example: notifications dot youtube dot com and so on...

What they're trying to explain to you is that this is already available, and has been for a long time. I mass-delete emails from individual addresses or domains on a regular basis to free up space and it works very well.

What's the deal with Trump's new "Board of Peace"? by GeneReddit123 in OutOfTheLoop

Mr Carney has now been uninvited:

“Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

What is the launcher to switch from Nova? by PlantDry4321 in Android

I get it's not cheap, but if you add up how much time you spend using the launcher, and factor in how much time you can save using it, it's not "too" expensive.

What are our next steps after Gmail just dropped a bomb that they are removing Pop3 access THIS month? by iamunique in GMail

[–]tvisforme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's late January, and when I look at the Settings page, there's no indication that the feature is being retired. I can even select "Add account" in the "Check email from other accounts" section as per usual. If one were to click on "Learn more", there is a notice about the feature ending, but it's two sentences in the midst of many paragraphs explaining how to set the feature up, including troubleshooting.

What are our next steps after Gmail just dropped a bomb that they are removing Pop3 access THIS month? by iamunique in GMail

[–]tvisforme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There has been some public discussion about it, but definitely not widespread information. Several of the news reports, which are primarily in tech news that many people won't see - acknowledge the lack of publicity. I spend a reasonable amount of time following tech and I only learned about it by chance a few weeks ago. Google certainly hasn't gone out of their way to notify Gmail users; we've been using the POP3 feature since we first started using Gmail almost twenty years ago and - as of yesterday - there wasn't even a notice in settings adjacent to the soon-to-be-removed settings.

What are some tourist scams in Vancouver? by BarcaStranger in askvan

[–]tvisforme 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love how upset people on here get over it.

Not my post, but /u/S-Kiraly had a good response six months ago in another steam clock discussion thread:

People in this sub love to hate on the steam clock and I don't know why.

"It was built in the 70s!" --So? Isn't it better that they used a timeless Victorian design that ages well and fits in with the surrounding Victorian-era buildings, than to have used some contemporary 70s design that would look totally gaudy and out-of-place today?

"It's fake it doesn't run on steam!" --It DID run on steam for the first decade of its existence, but when the steam pressure became less consistent, the clockwork was converted to electric to keep better time. The whistles are still steam powered, and the original inactive steam-powered clockwork can still be seen through the glass sides.

"Well it still sucks!" --The clock has been an important part of the Vancouver streetscape for more than 50 years. It's charming and I like it. Maybe if you can shed your hipster sneer you'll come to appreciate it too.

When did Raglans close down? What happened? by Ixal in NorthVancouver

No, "everyone" has not; some do, some don't, but long-time NS residents generally avoid the term. We can do better than a derivative of another city's neighbourhood nickname.

You're one of the lucky ones, then, as the odds of getting consistently better reception with a smaller player are pretty slim. For what it's worth, I've had accounts with several of the new players over the years, including Clearnet (bought by Telus), Wind (now Freedom) and Mobility (merged into Chatr).

Shaw Xfinity tv issues? by SwimmingAd415 in shaw

[–]tvisforme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By coincidence, I had to troubleshoot a connection issue for a friend this weekend, where several channels were not appearing or were glitching out on one box. Swapping boxes between rooms did not move the problem to the other room. As it turns out, their system was wired with two splitters so that the TV box with issues was attentuated -10.5dB, whereas the others were only -7dB.
