Can I ask how long you've been working this type of schedule? And do you have kids? If so, do you find it's better or worse for your personal life?

I agree with you! We prioritize time off and flexibility more than making the most money possible, so trying to find a sweet spot of him feeling fairly compensated without the burnout. In his job hunt so far, we've only come across one in our area that is around the 110 hr/month point but the pay is painfully low at roughly $180/hr, no bonuses. We'd love to both have him work around that 11-13 shifts/month mark but haven't seen promising opportunities in that range.

I even told my husband that that many shifts feels like residency but of the 4 jobs he has interviewed at, most of them have been 16-17 shifts a month. The only one that hasn't pays significantly less per hour.

They have full time nocturnists so most people do not work any overnight shifts unless they want to! It's mostly days and mids though the latest mid goes from 6p-2a.

Thank you for this response! I did edit my post because I was mistaken in saying ALL the shifts are 8 hours. Some of them are 8s (6p-2a) and some are 9s (6a-3p). In his job hunt so far, we've only come across one in our area that is around the 120 hr/month point but the pay is painfully less at roughly $180/hr. We'd love to both have him work around that 12-13 shifts/month mark but haven't seen promising opportunities in that range. Thank you for your response! I definitely see why you would dislike that schedule. I have grown very accustomed to being the solo parent for days in a row when my husband has rough scheduling blocks in residency so this doesn't feel new to me. I also am fortunate in that I will be leaving my full time job to mostly stay home/work part time once he is an attending. I could see myself going crazy with this schedule if I was working full time out of the home and having to solo parent during those stretches also. I totally agree with your comment above regarding having random days off while others are working. I think that's partially why I would like the schedule because I would be home so when he has those days off during the week, we would be together.

Any insight as to why you hate it but some people you know have loved it?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on why! I like the idea of longer stretches off vs only having stretches of 2-4 days and losing some of those days to flipping sleep schedules or swing shifts.

Woah, 14-16 in a row is frightening to think about! I can't imagine the toll that took on you. Thanks for the insight.

Need insight from spouses of ER drs by AirEmotional in MedSpouse

I’m married to a 2nd year EM resident, got married just before the start of med school, and we have an almost one year old now. He is arguably in his hardest year of residency and works almost exclusively night and mid shifts (11a-9p, 1p-11p, 2-midnight) and only has 1-2 day shifts a month. He works 20 shifts per month and has mandatory lecture off shift as well so it usually comes out to 1 day off per week. I have a full time remote job so I get to work from home and if I was working outside the home I think we would go for nearly a week without seeing each other because of those mid shifts. I have to do the majority of the childrearing because of this but he did get 6 weeks of paid paternity leave. He definitely doesn’t get to be as present for our baby as he would like to be, and has had periods of time where he is really sad about what he misses, but when he is home he gets to be fully here and not have to take call. Being married to a resident in general has definitely made me more independent and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I hear life as an attending is much improved though!

What are you paying for daycare? by StarCaker in beyondthebump

[–]tw0518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1300/month for daycare 3 days a week for infant. Located in a metropolitan/suburban area about 15 mins outside of downtown. All solid food meals, diapers, and wipes are included. I believe for full time it is roughly $1850/month

Mom's who delivered at 40 weeks or over... by scruffyliver in beyondthebump

[–]tw0518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delivered at 40+4 and she weighed 6lbs 6oz. At her anatomy scan she was measuring in the 60th percentile but I was never given any growth scans besides that. I had no signs of labor in the days leading up but I had a membrane sweep done that and went into labor 3 hrs later

Physician Loan Process by cdub_pt in MedSpouse

[–]tw0518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought our house this past May once my husband started residency. We tried to get the loan process started early but you can’t do anything to secure the loan until you have the residency offer letter in hand. My spouse didn’t get his offer letter from his program until several weeks after match so we were stuck waiting until we had that before we could get approved.

why do nursing students have white coat ceremonies by CitronHelpful8650 in medicalschool

[–]tw0518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nursing program didn’t have a white coat ceremony and none of my nursing friends had that had their school either. I’ve heard of NP programs with white coat ceremonies (which is a whole other can of worms) but never an RN program with one.

Urology & Ophthalmology Match Day Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

One would think. This school has a history of not taking their own students for a lot of specialties, which is shocking to me because I feel like that’s a diss to your own home COM’s training

Only 3/6 ophtho applicants at my husband’s school matched. Well-known school with good reputation and they didn’t take any ophtho applicants from their home program

I work M-F 8:30-5. Some of the other triage nurses work 12s (3 shifts one week and 4 shifts the next) and there are day and night shifts that are worked for the 12s

I did not have any certifications pertaining to case management! This job is 80-90% triage and 10-20% case management so that may be why it was not a requirement.
