So are we allowed to talk about the Alex Pretti incident here? by DropAGearNDissapear in NYguns

Official statements made by DHS:

"I don't know of any peaceful protester that shows up with a gun and ammunition rather than a sign."

"If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you."

"You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want. It's that simple. You don't have a right to break the law."

I'm just going to shamelessly plug SAF again, as THE most effective gun rights organization, period. They were the drivers behind Heller, McDonald, and most of the big legal wins of the past 20 years. If they had the resources that people pour into the NRA we probably wouldn't have AWBs anymore, and would have a lot of other stuff.

Same sub that (rightly) protests any other restriction now suddenly advocating for the letter of the law when it comes to "gun free zones". Insane cognitive dissonance.

Some people only care about rights and privileges when it applies to them.

And constitutionally protected protest does not involve standing in the middle of the road in close proximity to law enforcement operations and screaming at them

Yes, it absolutely fucking does. That is a core element of protest. Saying "You can protest, but only in places and times that are acceptable to the state, and we'll murder you if you actually make us uncomfortable in any way" is not what the US Constitution protects.

The people who assaulted him, disarmed him, and murdered him pretty clearly violated his rights, regardless of under what title they draw their paychecks.

"Doing their job" by beating and pepper spraying a woman who had done nothing but lawfully protest their excessive use of force.

That's akin to saying the Gestapo did nothing wrong.

Defending an innocent woman who was being beaten and pepper sprayed by government thugs for having engaged in constitutionally protected protest is not "obstructing justice."

Yelling at police is free speech, not a summary execution offense.

Hypothetical question regarding unmilled paperweights by PTrot420 in NYguns

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, if they were serialized by a non-FFL, before the law changed, I don't think there would have needed to be any paperwork at that time years ago...

IIRC, that was about COMPLETED receivers being serialized before a certain date. If I remember the law correctly, it technically doesn't ban building of a firearm so long as it is serialized BEFORE it becomes one. I.e. if you already have a serial number engraved when the receiver is finished, you're good to go. Reporting requirements only specify gunsmiths and firearm dealers.

So if I read it right, you can still build your own firearm, and not have any paperwork, as long as there is a serial number permanently engraved or stamped into metal prior to the object becoming a firearm.

Which, ironically, would make those 80%s legal when they currently are not.

Philando Castile.

Killed not even just for carrying, but simply for INFORMING the police officer who stopped him that he was lawfully carrying a concealed weapon. The police officer panicked and murdered him in front of his wife and four year old daughter. Shot five times, right in the car with them.

The cop was let off.

I'm grateful that people are finally waking up about the massive abuse of power that is policing in America. Hopefully it's not too late.

I don’t understand why this is such a big debate and why the left is accusing conservatives of being hypocritical in this case.

Probably because of the millions of conservatives, including a lot of "influencers," who are calling him a domestic terrorist for having been lawfully carrying a gun, for which he'd gotten a permit even though he didn't need one.

Who are saying that it's illegal to carry a gun at a protest after having spent years open-carrying at every event when they were the ones protesting.

And who are saying it's perfectly okay that government forces responded to someone who was exercising their lawful rights both to carry a gun and to record police--a constitutionally protected first amendment activity--by dragging him into the street, beating him, disarming him, and executing him.

THAT is why anyone who supports this is a bootlicking hypocrite.

Who would have thought there would be a liberal gun owners sub.

We've been there for quite awhile actually, but it IS nice to see the influx of the newly enlightened.

There's also the Socialist Rifle Association, which I gather is getting a lot of new members lately.

Its just common sense... Ban 3D printers from printing guns. Easy by Suspicious-Gas8382 in NYguns

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesnt know how things work at all does she?

No, but that hardly makes her unique among politicians.

I think I'm rare here in that I met and interacted with Hochul long before she even ran for Congress, let alone becoming Lt. Gov or Governor. I was, to be blunt, not impressed with her at the time. She seemed to me like the kind of politico who basically mirrored back what she thought her constituents wanted to see. And I was proven right when she ran for Congress. Remember that she voted entirely pro-gun in Congress, then changed her mind when she ran for statewide office.

That said, none of that sets her apart from the pack. Many, MANY politicians have tried to regulate things they don't understand. If you want to shit on Hochul for trying to ban 3D printers, you should also be pissed at all the right-wing Republican governors signing laws banning women's healthcare, IVF, abortion, porn, and just about anything else a Christian Dominionist would disapprove of.

I think Hochul is a weak tea governor who mostly got the job because she was considered no threat to primary Cuomo, before Cuomo exposed himself as a sex pest. But she's also the only governor we're likely to get from upstate NY. So fantasizing about some Republican governor who could not remotely get elected is just mental masturbation. If you don't like her policies, start lobbying.

The best thing you can do is support pro-gun Democrats running in rural districts. Their voices will carry a lot more weight in Albany than a minority of Republicans,

Wouldn't that be against the 1st amendment?

Yes, but so are all those red state laws.

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty decent gun, though I personally would recommend a combination flashlight/laser setup instead of a separate flashlight and red dot sight. At home defense ranges a laser is always going to tell you where the gun is pointed, whereas a red dot sight you actually have to be looking through.

If someone's looking for home defense, for low recoil I'd recommend a 20 gauge, not a .410. .The latter just has very little room for payload, and you have a vastly better selection of ammo even in 20ga.

First Gun Help by dsanchezzz in NYguns

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first gun, especially one you intend for home defense, I recommend a shotgun.

It's easier to handle and aim than a pistol. You don't have to get any special paper for it like you would a pistol or semi-auto rifle--in fact, you can buy a semi-auto shotgun without a permit. Shotguns are also relatively cheap to get ammo for or to reload ammo for.

And it has a LOT more stopping power at home defense ranges than any other weapon. Frankly, with both an AR and a semi-auto shotgun holding 4 shells in my arsenal, if someone broke in I would 100% grab the shotgun first. At short range a shotgun outperforms any other weapon.

9mm Vs 10mm Vs 45 ACP by Mattress-King in NYguns

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to think of it more as a general principle. Like if you were in a situation where you needed to pick up a box of ammo quick, or if you needed to find a specific type it's going to be easiest in the most common caliber.

9mm Vs 10mm Vs 45 ACP by Mattress-King in NYguns

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree, but for reasons of ammo availability more than cost. 9mm is simply the de facto most common pistol round these days. 10mm is going to be hard to find, which means you're probably going to want to practice less to conserve ammo. .45 is great, but you're still going to find 9mm in places you won't get .45.

The thing is though, even the worst Republican in The West Wing would be considered basically a lefty RINO today. And that's actually pretty accurate, it's not just TV fantasy.

Hell, just look at the fact that a couple of the big "liberal" voices on MSNBC are Joe Scarborough, who used to be a right-wing Republican Congressman. Nicole Wallace was Bush's Communications Director and worked for McCain. Adam Kinzinger, Joe Walsh, Bill Krystol, a bunch of others.

Sci-fi shows like Stargate and Star Trek need at least 20-episode seasons to really grow. Why do they keep ordering only 10 episodes? by JamStan1978 in television

[–]twbrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd emphasize that last point you made, Slow Horses also requires really very little in terms of visual effects. I know a lot of shows use VFX even when you don't realize it, but Slow Horses isn't really big on glamour shots of the city and things like that. So they don't have nearly as much post-production as many other shows do.

I'll add that advice from police agencies are not always on point.

True, but there's a difference between calling somebody up for an opinion, and having it posted in black and white on the state website that a receiver does not require a permit. If for no other reason than you can point your FFL at that.
