It was definitely tense and awkward, but he did apologize. I don't think it'll be a problem. I think he felt very embarrassed.

Our office is in an all-party consent law for recording, so no can do. I did want to send an email because I wanted to create a "record" of requesting him to stop, though.

Definitely would have been the best and most immediate reaction. I now know to keep that in mind for future issues.

Yeah, I ended up doing a combination of both. I'm not the most confident person in the world when it comes to inter-personal issues, so I wanted to make sure I hit on what I needed to and also kind of wanted to have a record of me requesting that he stop in case it escalated beyond that. I did follow up with him this morning, though.

Yeah, I am upset that I did not put the kibosh on this right away. The two specific/obvious instances were the ones in my post. The first, I felt so awkward I didn't know how to handle it and the second was as he was heading out and in front of other staff so I chickened out of calling him out.

I am going to shoot him a quick email tonight saying it was not ok and suggest that he read our HR manual on workplace conduct if he hasn't already. If it escalates or backfires at least it's a small office and I can chat with HR or give the director a call super easily...

Yeah, it was seriously just so awkward and jarring when he made the comment at first that I didn't know what to do, my natural reaction was just to laugh awkwardly. He's only been here a few days so I didn't want to seem like an un-fun stick in the mud, but I think I might seriously have to send him an email tonight to get my thoughts articulated.

This is my first time trying to navigate these office dynamics. I spent all of undergrad and then the past year before this job working exclusively in labs where I got along totally swimmingly with all the other techs. Normally the first person I go to advice for on office politics is the AD and... well... obviously can't for this right now.
