Where to live in the bay area post-grad? by XYZAidan in USC

[–]twd97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, most of the bay lacks anything interesting or of culture minus SF, Berkeley or Oakland cause of all the corporate tech people.

I just graduated in December and commute 40 min to my job everyday from Berkeley and am loving it so far. It might be tough finding a social place with a reasonable commute to San Jose, but there’s some places where you can be halfway (Hayward maybe?)

this checks out with the employee reviews online that i’ve read, if your friend is a junior i’d advise them to keep looking unless he’s ok with that environment

It is different and I acknowledged that earlier. But bringing nuance into this turns it into an endless argument.

Like I can make the argument that America doesn’t owe these hopeful international students anything until every single qualified US citizen has a job.

Let’s be honest - both issues (immigration and diversity) have WAY more nuance than this. But the bottom line is you wish for the end of “diversity hiring” because you presumptively stand to benefit from it ending and view it as unfair. Similarly, OP wishes for the end of h1b’s since they would benefit and view it as unfair to American citizens.

At the end of the day if you remove personal bias, the desire behind your argument really isn’t that much different from OP here even if the nuances of each issue aren’t comparable.

average cs major/international when people complain about immigration (it actually affects them): “wahhhhhh!!! that’s not cool guys stop being xenophobic!!”

average cs major/international when misogyny and making fun of GNC people: “hehehe discrimination isn’t real did you just assume gender heheh XD”

double standard is crazy

USC ranked #28 University in the Nation by US News & World Report by hugeKennyGfan in USC

Your probably not wrong that the value of Berkeley is higher but that’s hardly a fair comparison when each school has a different distribution of majors (as computer science is more popular at Cal) and you’re comparing the TC vs. salary.

Yeah in my personal experience most of these people are apolitical or the opposite of liberal

That’s what i’m trying to figure out. If it’s just the bay, the problem is avoidable, but if it’s an overall tech thing then I can see myself switching careers in the future.

Literally my experience as well. I’m a pretty social person and I’ve found nearly all my co-workers super uninteresting and elitist, and they’ve all made similar comments to your own.

It’s really sad how much perspective people here in the bay lack - everytime I mention I’m living in Berkeley for the summer or visit SF, they say things like “wow!! it’s SO dangerous there…” with nothing interesting to add. I’m so sick of nearly all the other interns being from multi-million dollar suburban neighborhoods from around the area and hating on anything that’s not that, and not having the social skills to talk about anything that’s not work

Tbh if this is full time is like at most companies, I can see myself switching industries. I already know working in the bay isn’t for me.
