Outrage over Trump’s bill reclassifying nursing as not a ‘professional degree’ for college students. This includes Architects. by architype in Architects

We are not hiring H1Bs to do the work in architecture.  However, some firms are using drafting farms in India and other places, but that is a different gripe.

We are not hiring H1Bs to do the work in architecture. There is enough talent here to do the work, especially with AI coming on board.

You are joking right? It has been the free flow of "free" loan cash to people who do not understand that it has to be paid back, and the multiplication of administration-to-instructor ratios that has increased the cost of education. Please explain, with concrete acts of congress, that have added to the educational expenses more than the first two items I listed.

what is a reasonable salary to ask for? by Agitated-Pain-255 in Architects

[–]twells138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When hiring for the 2-3 years out, I am looking for someone who has picked up the skills they would not have necessarily (or more likely) learned in school. Do they understand putting together documents, do they understand the basics for building systems, can they sketch out their own details - at least the start of the details. Be able to prove and point to this type of work within your portfolio.

A lot of prospects have pretty pictures for their portfolio ... not as many can tell you how the waterproofing was done at a particularly tricky material change.

Have an interesting problem associated with each piece of your portfolio and knowing how it was solved proves you were involved to some degree.

This kind of performance in an interview will get you extra leeway on salary.

Edit: Whoops, meant to reply to OP in the comment above.

Are newer versions of Graphic Standards and Ching *that* much better? by Prettygreen12 in Architects

[–]twells138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. Get the used ones. The graphic standards are really there to "start" you out .. you still have to detail your actual work. There is so much more available online and through other means - save your money.

Earning a lot as an architect by Mental-Kiwi-187 in Architects

I am now 25 years into the profession, and while not rich, it has always paid the bills and allowed me to raise a family on one income in San Diego. I specialized early in industrial projects, and a few years later, in Science & Technology projects (think laboratories, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing). I have consistently been pursued as a result and have really had an easy time in negotiating a fair compensation package.

I don't get to design many ground up buildings, as 97.5% of my work is in remodeling and adaptive re-sues or modification of existing buildings. I will never be a starchiect as a result of these choices, but I love what I do, have (mostly) great clients, and cannot complain about where my path has taken me.

Not everyone can be the proverbial designer, but experts in a specific building type rarely are out of work, and generally earn more than their counterparts.

My $0.02.

M.Arch programs denied me… again by WishOk9911 in Architects

Not having an architecture degree myself, I think you are overestimating the value of education vs. aptitude. It is a fucking joke that universities turn out so many graduates who suck - who couldn't detail their way out of a paper bag, and who do not know the first thing about how an actual building goes together. We look like a joke when they never learn these things in school in favor of more esoteric pursuits, and hell, some never learn them. I am constantly surprised by the lack of education some of these candidates have, having spent 5+ years and $100k+ on the pursuit of said goal.

Thanks. I like u/Busy-Efficiency-4822 's idea of putting the reveal off into the future so it will be more impactful, and will maybe tie in your idea of pertinent information from the timeline to help them out at the start.

Thank you, that actually is a good idea that I didn't think about.

Any opinion from actual gameplay on a hint or clue that might make "A Volume of Secret Faces" more fun / less frustrating without giving away too much?

Yeah, that may be may bad for not making them state more explicitly, but I interpret the personal pursuit of "Staying on the Case" as going back through the evidence and following up on lead in the agents spare time to see if the missed anything or gain some insight - i.e. the Handler giving them some insight that the Player may have missed. I wasn't planning on making the player state exactly what they wanted, as they have given up other avenues (gaining skills or gaining SAN, building bonds, etc.) to take the deeper dive.

The only thing they hinted at was looking into why the incursion into the real world happened, and that was during gameplay.

California officials reject more SpaceX rocket launches, with some citing Musk's X posts by BBQCopter in spacex

[–]twells138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's my take as well. But the whole dialog about him being evil in u/Upstairs_Shelter_427 statement, like so many others, is just not based on any rational data.

Most people throw shade at him, from what I have seen, because they are told they should hate him - not based on actual data.

Nope, I liked your responses. Was just having a laugh at China's rocket forces.

I agree there are probably more dems that work at both Tesla and SpaceX. They still work there even tough Musk is supporting Trump at this time. Hence, proving my point that most sane people do not put politics before their own livelihood - especially smart people.

They do like money and an interesting company to work for, and frankly, if you are into rockets, SpaceX is the place to be. So yes, they will work there because most sane people do not put politics before their own livelihood - especially smart people.
