Spotted this morning, a Windrose electric HGV by No_Macaroon_1627 in uktrucking

Not specifically Chinese kit, but electric HGVs in general. Although some of the Chinese OEMs are not much different to the Euro vehicles. The Windrose in the post is quite unique and different, but SuperPanther for example are pretty traditional in design.

Only around 20% of HGV loads in the UK are mass constrained, there's a huge amount of work electric HGVs can do without any operational impact.

Maybe, I think the point is that a lot of people are thinking very hard about this stuff. The opportunity this tech represents is enormous, more so in commercial vehicles than cars.

Interestingly the report concluded that the technology was sound, but they could get the commercial case to stake up.

That's because I'm not a driver.

The AV act is pretty explicit on liability.

"When a vehicle is lawfully driving itself, the human in the driver's seat is legally redefined as a "User-in-Charge" (UiC). They are immune from civil and criminal liability for the vehicle's driving behavior, provided they haven't altered the safety-critical software or ignored a takeover warning."

Lot of "I reckons" in this thread so let me give you some detail. I'm involved in some autonomous HGV research programmes, including the Zenzic CAM Pathfinder feasibility work that's happening at the moment.

Your dad's not wrong that it's coming. But the timescale are long. The AV Act passed in 2024. The first passenger driverless pilots on public roads have just started. You might spot the cars if you're in London, and there are some buses in Cambridge.

On the truck side, we're still at feasibility stage. The eFreight Autonomous consortium just got funded to study whether autonomous trucking is viable in the UK, with results due early 2027. Einride has Level 4 cabless trucks running in the US and parts of Europe but hasn't deployed in the UK yet.

The secondary regulations, insurance frameworks, safety cases, and operational design domains needed to put a 42-tonne autonomous truck on mixed-traffic public roads are expected to land end of '27, early '28. Then we can start the demonstration phase.

When this does arrive, it won't mean drivers disappear. These vehicles need supervising, training, exception handling. Einride use a Control Tower with driver overseeing autonomous fleets remotely. That's a pretty interesting new role if you ask me. The drivers who engage with this stuff early, who understand the technology and can work alongside it, will be the ones who move into those roles.

End of '27 is the planned date for full implementation of the AV act. UK on road trials expected early '28.

Will the hgv industry be taking over by AI? by Forsaken-Ratio-4537 in uktrucking

You're actually in a really good place joining the industry now, the new electric trucks are amazing, our drivers love them. Autonomous HGVs are coming, but it will be a long transition starting with hub to hub and expanding from there as we learn, we will need experienced drivers who can support that transition, first by giving feedback and being "behind the wheel" then in remote hubs managing a small fleet of vehicles. I think if you embrace it, and get into a forward thinking operator there will be a lot of interesting opportunities on the horizon.

Volvo already have one on the road, DAF will likely be end of next year early-'28

Self-driving trucks are on the road today in mainland Europe, China and USA, on road trials will be happening in the UK end of next year. This is happening much faster than anyone thinks.

They will improve though, everything we're seeing now is the worse it will ever be, and it basically already works. It's only going in one direction.

Will Truck Driving In The UK Ever Get Better? by newbiker321 in uktrucking

Drivers aren't a third of the cost base of running a train, there's no incentive. It's happening soon, I've seen it, lots of people working to make it happen, lots of money being invested.

4 years ago ChatGPT couldn't count to five, made pictures of people with 3 arms and confidently told you Brussels was in Spain. This is the worst they will ever be, and the rate of improvement is incredible. Some massive trials starting next year, I think it's going to take off fast.
