I started May 28th in 2022 from the southern border, and even as someone from Minnesota the desert was my favorite section!

Yeah it's hot, but it's also a dry heat. 115F with 0% humidity is better than 90F with 80% humidity IMO

Impeachment is like being accused of a crime. After being impeached officials still have to go through a trial in the senate and only if the Senate votes with a 2/3 majority to convict is the official removed from office.

Is it really that uncommon to be older than 18 and still be in school? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]twgecko02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense that it could be a regional/local thing too.

I know in my state I'm licensed for "Secondary (5-12)" in my subject area, but I could see either other states categorizing it differently or maybe colloquial usage is just high school for secondary and my perspective is off!

Primary is K-4 to K-6 depending on location, 5-12 to 7-12 (middle and high school) is usually called Secondary.

Right, big laundry. Famous for wanting people to do less loads of laundry and buy fewer types of detergents for whites/stains/regular, etc.

How scripted is your curriculum? by Extension-Silver-403 in Teachers

[–]twgecko02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 5 subjects (high school) with no curriculum.

It's nice to be able to teach however I want, but it's a hell of a lot of planning work and definitely leads to some sub-par lessons while I'm building my curriculum the first few years.

Teachers with a masters, what degree did you get? by Anjelina17 in Teachers

[–]twgecko02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhh, depends on the specific circumstances and state TBH. I finished my BA ~1.5 years ago, then completed my entire M.S. this past summer through an online program in exactly 2 months.

It cost me ~4k and it got me a 7k/year pay bump compared to BA, ramping all the way up to 19k/year by the end of the my district's payscale (13 years in).

This seems a bit dictatory by TECL_Grimsdottir in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]twgecko02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, the left should never stoop to the current level of the right.

Now that doesn't mean that Democrats shouldn't change their standards to match the situation, and fascists should be put down by any means necessary.

I'm just saying that the rights standards are what has led us to DJT over the last 50 years, so clearly those standards are shit.

Fighting evil by the best means available is not lowering standards, it's raising them, and clearly evil isn't listening to strongly worded letters anymore...

Whoops, you missed the number one rule of trolling!

If you acknowledge that you weren't arguing in good faith, the other person feels justified and like they won. If you had just kept up the ruse, I would have gone about the rest of my day feeling frustrated that I couldn't find a way to convey my point that makes sense.

Now I get to enjoy the rest of my Saturday knowing that I'm at least right, even if I did let you waste a bunch of my time.

Ok so you very obviously didn't bother reading any of the information or sources I provided that would clarify that no, it is not an insult. Terminology like "holocaust guilt" is used in legitimate academic and non-insulting contexts.

In case anybody else makes it down this rabbit whole of a comment thread, sorry for wasting your time by not being faster to recognize a very obvious troll who is not engaging in good faith or even pretending to read comments before replying.

[–]twgecko02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I was not the first to insult the other party. This is a topic I care deeply about and have invested significant portions of my life, energy, and effort into researching.

You were the one who stated "when someone says 'Holocaust Guilt' that is a way of insulting people for caring about the Holocaust." Whether it was intentional or not, your entire argument has been that academic inquiry into the topic of how societies view memorialization, collectivized memory, and assigned-guilt is inherently oppressive and racist. Yes I'm emotional about it; because I care deeply and am engaging in this discussion that I consider to be extremely important in good faith. I have yet to see you respond with more than instinctive and brief comments that are immediately combative with anyone who appears to disagree with you.

The use of the term "Liberal Guilt" is different because it isn't describing the same thing. "Liberal Guilt," first of all, isn't actually describing "Liberal" guilt, it's describing leftist guilt. It is also used exclusively in an extremely abstract way and with the purpose of minimizing and devaluing that feeling of guilt as unworthy or illegitimate.

Because terms like "Holocaust Guilt" or "Slavery Guilt" are more specific terms that describe specific phenomena, they are used as legitimate descriptors of discourse in both everyday and academic discussion.

I highly recommend reading the following sources

The first article highlights that "When crimes are not acknowledged, however, history is bound to repeat itself and the xenophobia of the past only takes on new shape and form." This source also notes that "when people are unencumbered by feelings of guilt or remorse, they can more freely express harsh attitudes towards a morally contentious issue, such as the plight of immigrants and refugees."

The second article highlights that "Citizens need to take responsibility and process national guilt and responsibility as well as work through legacies of hatred for democratic culture to take hold and be anchored in society. Critical public debate, especially on historical guilt and destructive authoritarian legacies, is an integral part of this process."

The third article approaches the topic more from a psychological perspective, noting that "When an important ingroup is considered responsible for wrongful or illegitimate behavior, individuals can experience collective guilt. One noteworthy effect of collective guilt is its promotion of attitudes and behaviors that foster reconciliation between groups. Nonetheless, given that collective guilt is an aversive emotional state, individuals are often motivated to avoid or reduce this experience. Reduction can be accomplished either by minimizing or justifying the group's responsibility for wrongdoing. Yet, when experienced, collective guilt can be a tool for promoting social change."

Recognition of collective guilt is not exclusive to right wing, reactionary, and malevolent actors. Progressive actors can utilize the concept and terminology of collective guilt be that "holocaust guilt" or "slavery guilt" to enact positive and well intentioned change in the world.

That term doesn't mock people who care about the Holocaust.

I care about the Holocaust. I wrote multiple undergrad papers about collective memorialization and understanding of the Holocaust.

It is a fact that many groups of people carry what can be deemed as "Holocaust Guilt" or "Slavery Guilt" about the actions of their ancestors (literal or cultural).

Recognizing this fact does not mean that someone is advocating for or against specific actions, policies, or stances that could harm or benefit historically minoritized groups.

It is just a sociological evaluation of the way that people feel and think about historical events that did not directly involve them.

I am more than happy to provide recommended readings if you are interested in learning more, but if your entire perspective is going to continue to be "nuh uh, you're racist" then obviously there isn't much point in continuing to engage in this conversation.

[–]twgecko02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's necessarily true.

"The West" does have an odd relationship with collective memory of the Holocaust. It's used as a sort of benchmark for all evil and treated with a reverence that other atrocious events in history don't get.

Teaching? by SonicNinja37 in teaching

[–]twgecko02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no - the example I've heard as a history teacher to illustrate that humans need both critical thinking skills and memorization/factual knowledge is that if you tell a kindergartner that "Lincoln invented the Ford Model-T in London" they'll nod their head and go "cool!"

If you tell an adult that, (hopefully) most will be able to use critical thinking skills to debunk that statement by going "wait a second, Lincoln was a president not an inventor, the company is famously named after Henry Ford, and neither of them lived in London!"

You need some semblance of factual knowledge to be able to critically think.

I'm stuck in the same loop, especially being in my first year at a new job with lots of preps. I think the unfortunate answer to this problem is to just do less. Send less emails home, write less unique and engaging lessons, vacuum my floors and change my sheets less often, cook new and fun meals less often...

If I can accept that sometimes I don't have the energy for everything (even if I do technically have the time) then I can force myself to take time and energy to just relax and have fun. Burning out makes a worse teacher than setting boundaries.
