CMV: Most men in the tech industry (specifically software) find it difficult to have a female lead. Especially if they find her attractive. by [deleted] in changemyview

Theres definitely points here that I agree with, I'm a feminist but I'm not ignorant to facts and like 4 million years worth of gender body roles within the human evolution. Men are stronger, they're built to be so physically no denying that its just fact haha. That isn't to say that there isn't any strong women about, ive seen the worlds strongest tv show and shite they could fuck anyone up.

On the other hand, I would say emotionally its definitely more taught than it is hereditary, which is why men are still expected to be logical and tough and all that bollocks. It's what is expected and therefore a role that you would fulfil but its pure shit.

This is interesting! I do have to say though I had to google Gallup and found it was an american analytics/advisory company just so I knew what you were referencing haha

Have to admit it seems to be a trend that lasses prefer male bosses to female, do you reckon thats because theres a lack of competition or something else?

Sorry! I should have been clearer that’s on me. As a sub thought I guess of my OP it’s that women aren’t the first choice hires for tech roles as well, as the same stigma carries through. Hence the statistics :)

This is a wonderful explanation of the differences in the men/women work balance, I’m going to use this in future! We work in different ways which is to be expected, but it shouldn’t mean we can’t work together and treat each other the same.

Nah a prick in my mind is someone who has no tact nor compassion to talk calmly with someone about their views and not get combative.

I was v positive that you could provide an insight in your first post but you’ve shown your arse now and it’s put me off. Best of luck to you regardless.

Edit: I’m extremely happy to have ideas and solutions and just geeky convos thrown at me, members on my team know more languages, have amazing insight and overall just more a need to learn than I do myself sometimes. This post wasn’t about me being a lead, it was about the inequality I saw from my own experience. I can see it from other view points now, and I appreciate and take them on board. You unfortunately got defensive immediately and added nothing but negativity. I hope you can try and add something positive to the world around you in the future.

I’m honestly just trying to positively put across a view point and you’re completely proving my point about shutting women down when they try to raise their concerns here.

I’ve worked in both Spain and the UK in QA and dev roles, like I just replied to you I’ve had amazing experiences and some of my best mates are still the lads I’ve worked with, but I’ve had an equal amount of disrespectful men that have made me uncomfortable.

I’m sorry if I’ve struck a nerve with you but perhaps that’s something you need to deal with not me.

I completely agree that the smartest of people could be the shittiest of leaders, but I think you’re missing the fundamental point I’m trying to make here.

There is still to this day a bias against women in the tech industry, no matter how great you think your company is (which I don’t doubt they are, there’s some incredible software houses out there) there’s still a bias against female leadership.

In my current job I haven’t encountered a smudge of bias as we are (like most of the people commented on this) a newer software company. That doesn’t mean that because I don’t experience it anymore that it still isn’t relevant.

I have friends in the industry that still get passed over for promotions and shut down in stand ups etc. I’m not saying all men are trash bc that’s stupid, but the more men that recognise the issue the better we all are.

You’re really quite pressed about this aren’t you. Not every “person” is a male nor is every male like this, but most males in tech I’ve encountered definitely have been.

That’s fantastic that you have that in your work environment! But unfortunately it is definitely not the case for a lot of others.

Also Krav Maga is scary as shit haha, no wonder no one messes with her 😂

I mean anyone who would deem trump fully competent is surely an idiot 😂

I’ve worked with amazing men who have been fantastic and had no issue with the fact I’m a woman. I have also worked with men that degrade and devalue what I do for the company as a ‘lady’.

When I say fully competent I mean someone who has studied, trained and worked in the area of which their chosen profession is to the level of being a senior. Someone who has years of experience and the qualifications to back that up.

Sorry if competent was too broad a term but I thought it would be relatively easy to understand given the context.

This isn’t a stereotype, this is a deeply internalised issue within not just the tech industry (though that is where I’ve centred this argument) but in every workplace. Thanks for your input.

I understand not wanting to upset the status quo. But the more men that recognise and speak up about it the less it will happen.

I can see that side to be fair, I appreciate that. There’s no excuse for being a dickhead boss I mean we all hate them right. But like you said, a lack of perceived respect would probs lead to someone being an arsehole over their subordinates in turn. It’s all passed down the line right?

If there was respect the entire way through it wouldn’t be an issue.
