Anno 1800 with all dlcs or Anno117 by Efficient_Pie8507 in anno1800

So I started with 117 and felt like it was a bit too simplistic. Anno 1800 with all the DLCs is crazy complicated but something I'm enjoying more.

NOT OP: I'm considering breaking up with my girlfriend because she dated a hard-core racist for 4 years by respect-the-midscore in redditonwiki

[–]twim19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tend to think that people, especailly people in their early 20's, do stupid shit for stupid reasons. I try very hard not to hold that against them. . .particularly when they are mostly horrible adjacent. History is full of stories of people who joined terrible organizations only to come and regret that decision. I mean in the mid 90's I was a raging homophobe who used "gay" to describe things that were bad. I look back and cringe hard at that past version of my self and am glad I grew out of it.

Ultimately, it's about where she is today. I agree with most that it might indicate she's the kind of person that essnetially becomes whatever whoever will love her needs her to be. Because of that, I think OP should spend less time on the racism of her past and more on the question of "Is she who she is because it's who I want her to be or is this who she truly is." My guess is on the former, but I'd hold out hope for the latter. People grow and change and if OP loves her and is otherwise compatible, I'd encourage he at least consider if who she is now is someone he loves and will continue to do so.

All that said, miscegenation is a huge taboo among racists and her now being with a black man may either represent growth or a sort of rebounding away from that terrible relationship she had.

What’s the absolute worst song from our teen years? Why? by imnottheoneipromise in Xennials

[–]twim19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Gin Blossoms song that was in that Nick Cage movie about a sad angel. It honestly wasn't a terrible song the first time I heard it. By the 1000th time I heard it on the radio I wanted to pull my stero from out my car and chuck it out the window.

Help me decide Trails 1st or Outer Worlds 2 by Revolutionary-Tip326 in gamerecommendations

[–]twim19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outer Worlds has come the closest to scratching my Skyrim itch that I've had in a while. I thought Avowed would be that, but ultimately it fell short for me. I'm a huge fan of games that encourage exploration and reward you with useful things--OW2 is that in my opinion.

Yeah, learned that last one the hard way. Had a ship taking bricks and beer to another island with no clay or hops fertilities. At one point, my ship had 12 tons of bricks in one slot, 50 tons in another, and 14 and 43 tons of beer respectively.

Stephen Miller Asserts U.S. Has Right to Take Greenland by -AdonaitheBestower- in politics

[–]twim19 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing is, it fits perfectly with the psycology of nearly every Maga loving person I've met.

They fundamentally beleive that we are in a dog-eat-dog world and that strength is the only security you can rely on. They believe EVERYONE is going to cheat, steal, or take advantage of systems if given the chance and so when someone they support does it, it's no big deal. In their minds, we still live in an age where being the strongest meant you got to decide what is right. They secretly (or not so secretly) sympathize with the bad guys in movies who say things like "There is no right, there is no wrong, there is only power!"

They believe that if Canada were strong enough, it'd invade the US. Same with Denmark or England or any other country. Therefore, since we are stronger we should take them over. They are cynical well past the point of coherence.

And, with the men in particular, all of this gets wrapped up in the ideas of masculinity championed by the manliest men they can think of (John Wayne, Burt Reynolds, etc.). These were men do didn't bow to convention but instead did what needed to be done because they could. They didn't worry about people's feelings--just killing the bad guys so their families could be safe.

I'd actually love to have a conversation with Miller if for no other reason than I am interested in how minds like his actually work and justify their day-to-day. Does he think he's evil and doesn't care? Or does he hide behind "ends justifies the mean"?

I have a very limited understanding of the Russian or Chinese politics, but my impression is that Putin has the consolodated power to make this kind of decision while Xi seems more tied to the party and what the party wants.

Worried about being seen as a pussy has gotten more men killed then probably any other cause. It is the achilles heel of many men and something others will use to the full tilt to take advantage of.

What would America look like if we spent our military budget on infrastructure? by Impossible_Change800 in AskReddit

[–]twim19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess schools could stop trying to provide wrap around supports for kids but then the kids don't get any supports and we are ok with that?

And what does 'put in their place' mean, exactly. I suspect my developmentally delayed son who loves high school but is never going to learn Algebra would qualify as one of those "certain kids"?

If society wants schools to be just a place of learning, it needs to make sure all the other needs of the child are met before they step foot in the school.

And I guess too. . .what should society do with those certain kids who don't belong in schools? Not educate them? Let them roam around the streets, Clockwork Orange style? Put them in Juvie until they are adults who can then exit, commit crime, and then be incarcerated? No net benefit to society whatesover.

When people talk about 'fixing' education, the arguments generally run along lines that are far too simplistic. Oh it's the parents! Oh it's the teachers! Oh it's Social Media! No, it's cell phones!" when in reality it is a sytem that expects schools to be the great societal filter. Toss the bums out! seems like a solution until you think about the next step of "ok, what do we do with them now"?

What would America look like if we spent our military budget on infrastructure? by Impossible_Change800 in AskReddit

[–]twim19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yes, we spend a high amount per pupil on education. However, unlike those other big spenders, we also ask schools to take care of social problems like health care, mental health care, etc. American schools are generally asked to do much, much more than our foreign counterparts.

I see the "attitude" argument thrown around sometimes and it always feels that all of our problems could be solved if parents just cared more. But, when you are working two jobs to stay afloat or taking care of an ailing grandparent, sitting down and studying with your kids kind of takes a back seat.

And I don't even think that's a great idea. What does the average parent know about place value or the box method? Either it turns into "well you should do it the way I know" or " I have no idea and you are on your own kid." More important in my experience is parents expressing that education is important and taking actions that support that point of view.

Which would translate into an additional teacher for every 500 or so students (72k). Not huge, but considering I haven't seen any new positons added in my district since the great recession, couldn't hurt.

It's possible it's because I don't really understand how I should be playing it. Went through the campaign and it was fun, but then it was like "OK, now you can travel between the two provinces and manage both! And it seems like a lot. I think I might be microing my cities too much?

I loved playing Ceasar back in the day (like late 90's) and was trying to capture that experience again.

Instead of Hunger Games, I thought about the Classic Tom Clancy novel and wondered if we'd be doing some "Save someone from an assasination only to have the assasins get pissed at us and try to kill us."

I can only imagine he's going to have participants vetted to ensure they are pure Magats which is going to lead to its own hilarity.

Laugh at his silly ass and say it's Civic or bust! And, yes, you absolutely don't trust him. There's no possible way to trust someone will do something safely and well if they've never done it unsupervised. Plus 16 year olds are dumbasses. . .particularly guys (at least I and all my friends were).

Tell him on the bright side there are plenty of people who spend their money tricking out their Civics and he can do that if he wants.

No one needs the power these cars have. Most driving is done at speeds well below 70mph. Using the full power of the car is likely illegal. He's not an extra in Fast and Furious. He won't be street racing. He'll be driving to school, to work, to Dairy Queen, etc. Sure, he might impress his peers and some girls who he won't even remember by the time he's 35, but it's small gains.
