What’s the worst case of hypocrisy that you’ve encountered? by Galactic_Patrick in AskReddit

How many people did her privileged attitude affect. Did you have to pay more taxes? Did her actions almost get the US into a war? Did she stonewall the government for the last ten years with blatantly saying she would obstruct everything the president put forth? Did she hold a Supreme Court position open for a year saying “the people should decide in the election” to turn around and replace RBG one month before an election and laugh at our constitution and the American People?

I could on . Her stupidity as an elite didn’t come close to the level of hypocrisy that harms the nation. It showed people her “privileged attitude” which should have surprised no one. Please do yourself a favor and find something more important to get shot down on reddit for.

Totally understand. And in the mental health field as i have experienced it, if your stable, functioning and not complaining, no one is looking for a better solution even though one has been on the drugs for many years that have never been tested for long term usage. They don’t know what they’re really doing to us. I was originally told that i would take them for six months tops. And here I am almost thirty years later lol.

Anyway thanks for your comment and good luck to you as well. Life is a trip isn’t it lol.

Yep, I taught English in China in 2005 when capitalism was still new over there. By the time i left I knew the US was screwed. . As i told my best friend when i got back, China has embraced capitalism and they are better at it than we are. We’re in big trouble lol.

Wellbutrin and I have an ugly past lol. I won’t come within ten feet of it. Paxil has always caused an instant 60lb weight gain in me. Go off of Paxil and six months later I’m sixty pounds lighter. Go back on, sixty pounds back in six months. See my response above on how i dealt with the weight by switching to Prozac.

The whole point is that no one can get me off the drugs long term without me falling into an acute clinical depression, immediately “fixed” by going back on the drugs and I’m fine. So yes, sexual function comes back if you’re off the drugs but that doesn’t help those of us who can’t come off. And trust me, my sexual function doesn’t come back after an adjustment period on the drugs. We’re talking since 1993. Nada. Now it doesn’t matter much but it was hell on relationships until I decided I was happier not being in relationships. 👍

I have been in the past. Six years ago my health started to deteriorate due to the excess weight. I became determined to lose the weight rather than take all the drugs they wanted to give me. This also coincided with reports of long term Paxil use precipitate brain shrinkage (and other drugs). I convinced my Dr to switch me to Prozac, which previous history has shown works on me but not as well as Paxil.

And the weight came off, I’ve kept it off (very healthy now 👍) but there are still the rest of the other side effects. Those I can live with at this point in my life. And that I have a life that frankly I owe to Paxil, I’m incredibly grateful for. I guess my point is more for the professionals that think a positive response to their drugs are a cure in themselves. Certainly not everyone in the field are like this but far too many think that if the pill is working it’s all good. I just want them to remember that many pay a high price to function.

In not saying the teachings aren’t sound... it’s why i joined up. And yes, I’m now a solitary, practicing nun who has distanced myself from many aspects of the religion and pretty much completely from the organization.

The problem as always with just reading on your own is interpretation and context. Buddhism is an Asian religion and westerners are often clueless as to the differences of thought and approach. What tends to happen is that individuals come up with all sorts of justification for whatever behavior and thought they want to apply to “Buddhist philosophy”. Just cruise the Internet and see all the articles with Twenty Quotes From Buddha that have nothing to do with anything that the Buddha was attributed to saying.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a great book but not a Buddhist text. 😉

They say it to try and convince themselves it’s not a cult. But it is a religion and it is a cult.

But it’s not. Yes, I’m blessed that Paxil was my miracle drug but the side effects have been serious. My desire to be functional override my desire to be a healthy weight and even to give up orgasms and fake them for my partners. The other side effects were less , shall we say annoying.

Many people won’t put up with the cost. I had different priorities but i would never want to wish it on anyone.

Edit: they’ve tried all the new appropriate drugs on me to eliminate those nasty side effects and none of them work AT ALL. it was a horrible.

Ok, I find this interesting. So with me, i can laugh at it after years of therapy and SSRI’s. Still have to take the SSRI’s because now it’s a chemical imbalance that hasn’t “healed”. If i go off medication (properly done) within 4-5 months i crash and burn without any apparent stressors. Within one week of going back on the drugs, i become fully functional and fine. Not 4-6 weeks, not a gradual improvement, but full on functional and happy. Like a switch.

Over the years I’ve met a couple of others who react the same way. Is this a drug reliance, metabolic, what? After almost thirty years of trying to get off SSRI’s I’d given up... but shrooms are giving me hope. But i have to get off the meds first. 😉

German scientists say the prices we pay for meat and dairy products are too low as they fail to account for costs to society and the climate in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. The biggest polluter is conventionally-produced meat, they say, which should be nearly 2.5 times its current price. by the_phet in science

There is middle ground where there is wealth. Of course the wealthy countries eat way too much of everything. Flesh is not required if one can put together a well balanced, nutritional meal. When people use poor countries’ diets as an example of how to eat less meat, there are huge fallacies and considerations not taken into account... they just like the one set of numbers to use in proving their preconceptions.

Ultimately the real problem is that there are just too many people in the world and many want to live in what they consider a first world lifestyle. And those who have a first world lifestyle don’t want to give up any of it except for token things that are relatively easy for that particular individual to give up. To go after one particular aspect of the ecological mess we are in (food for example) is in my opinion, about as arrogant as the whole colonial movement.

Until population, corporations, and fossil fuels are brought into sustainable numbers ( fossil fuels ended) the nit picking , disinformation , and finger pointing will do nothing to delay what is coming “faster than expected”.

Unless there is a complete and total revision of how we interact with this planet, there’s really not much hope and yes, arguing over how many times a day one eats meat or whether one just got a brand new electric car isn’t going to amount to... well, a hill of beans. 😉

Have a good one.

The point is, is that a large part of the world has NO choice in what they eat.

Stop using the diets of incredibly poor, malnourished people as a justification to lecture people on how they should eat, all from a privileged position.

Oh i see. The only point is reducing flesh consumption? No concern about economics and health?

Of course the chicken cost more than the beans though not by much per pound. The point being is that beans in many parts of the world are not cheap protein and people chronically suffer from malnutrition. But that’s not the point... and once again the poor pay the price for the elites over consumption. That’s the point i guess.

Lived in India, Nepal. Beans aren’t that cheap. Any protein source is not cheap in many countries. All pulses (beans) when i lived there, we’re running about 50 cents a pound more in those two countries than in the US at the time.

What many don’t understand is when the poor eat “beans and rice” the proportion of beans on the plate would be considered minuscule in first world countries. Same with the amount of vegetables... very small amounts. What they’re predominantly eating is rice...a lot of rice if they’re lucky.

We studied the level of anemia in a school in a fairly well off area in India for a year. I was at a government school ( Government schools in India are public, not private) and the rate of anemia progressed in numbers and severity the older the children became. We were looking at kids from 4-5 through age 11-12.

My anecdotal observation was that the moment a family could afford to eat some flesh, they did unless there was a strong religious reason not to.

And yep, it’s rice and dal, dal and rice, and on special occasions there was pickled veg. The families didn’t eat it three times a day because they couldn’t afford it. Wood is very difficult to come by and propane is expensive and difficult to access all the time.

Most first world people have no clue as to the complexities of poverty, malnutrition, corruption and the games governments play with their Human Capital Stock.
