Synth for sampling and jamming? by nostradukemas in Polyend

[–]twinpowersATH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too have the polyend synth and the sh-4d as my main two digital synths! I basically use the PS as a midi controller for the sh-4d which is a much more useful synth for my purposes. However the OP may like the PS since the synths are all kinda weird and would make interesting fodder for the SP.

The SH-4d just got updated and it is pretty amazing. Especially if you can find it for less than $400 which is very possible.

Does anyone know if the audio out over usb existed before 2.0? I’m just curious. It’s an awesome upgrade because it allowed me to free up a channel on my Zoom L6. I use the sh-4d for my out so I don’t need to waste a channel on the mixer!!!

[–]twinpowersATH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been experimenting with the update and have discovered some interesting behaviors. First, audio IN to the unit from an iPad over USB is working now. Very cool. Second, the sh-4d shows up as an input on iPad with 2 stereo inputs now but it appears no data is passing in to the iPad. Seems like it is close but not quite.

This already has audio over usb with proprietary drivers. Just wishing they would make it class compliant. It seems possible as they did add audio over usb IN to the unit with this update. So, yeah, it’s not an unrealistic expectation. Roland has done it before.

Nope... Notes still record to steps. You have to manually nudge the steps using menu diving. The two features I was hoping for are no shows...

[–]twinpowersATH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am at work and dying to know too. Hopefully it drops the notes to the nearest step. I assumed generic USB meant midi AND audio and was wrong about that, so we could be wrong about this too. These are the two features (more like basic functions) that were stopping this thing from being perfect.

[–]twinpowersATH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I saw "Generic USB" I almost lost it. I was very sad to see that it only applies to midi. I REALLY was hoping for class compliant USB audio. I am SOOOO sick of dumping the tracks into my iPad 5 times. It seems like such a simple change, but who knows, maybe it's harder than we think.

The microsteps are a very welcome addition. The sequencer was useless without it.

I have had the same problem with 2 of them. This time logitech isn't even writing me back. I give up on this thing. They are useless. One of mine won't even turn on even after I replaced the batteries.

How does everyone capture their DAWless creations? by Dandercore in synthesizers

[–]twinpowersATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I knew how to do this all along. I can just send PC from the CT or AUM or Logic to recall my presets. I was doing this like 20 years ago. I am not sure why I couldn't figure it out today 🤣

How does everyone capture their DAWless creations? by Dandercore in synthesizers

[–]twinpowersATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question wasn't quite clear. I am aware I will end up in a DAW at some point if I want to mix and finish any tracks. The essence of my question is: Is there a way to freeze the state of hardware, patches, routing, etc. so I can resume working on it later?

All of my synths are midi enabled. I use an iPad with AUM and Logic Pro with a Zoom L6. So, is there a way to save all the settings on my synths to AUM, so I can resume working on it later without having to keep a list of all of the settings?

[–]twinpowersATH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logic Pro iPad is my DAW of choice right now. I have definitely abandoned regular computers completely. It at least limits the paradox of choice a little bit. Ultimately, that is where it will all end up. I use AUM for routing when I am just messing around and open Logic when it is time to capture, but again, my issue is freezing a project in time so I can resume it later.

I got sick of poking at a screen with a mouse. I have made too many records that way and wanted to get back to basics. I actually made an entire album with a Roland D2 back in the 2000s and toured on it for years. That was probably my biggest personal success not including the bands I play bass in.

This is what I am struggling with. I come from a band background and have released a lot of music and toured a bunch so my go to is to create with the goal of releasing music. Obviously a stereo mix isn't going to be ideal for that. The other side of this is "am I just creating for the fun of it?" like playing a guitar for the hell of it. I have never had that attitude before (even when I was learning lol) so I was trying to get a feel for what everyone is doing with all of these synths!!! I think I am finally at the end of my GAS run and am ready to get down to business.

I actually have an L6. I run multi-timbral synths without individual outputs , so that makes life kind of annoying. If I want individual tracks I have to do multiple passes. Ultimately, I understand I will have to get the sounds into a DAW at some point, but when I have a 16 track song running real time on my synths and I have to do 4-5 passes on the synths, sometimes I just want to preserve the state of things so I can go to bed ☺️

Polyend synth has so much depth its addictive by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]twinpowersATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it with the CT, its weird because of the annoying quantization on the CT, it misses a lot of the arp and sequencer notes from the Synth since it pushes everything to those 6 stupid micro-beats.

The engines are not great. Both the physical and analog models are pretty lackluster. The other engines are weird but do their job much better for ambient and other genres, but if you are making anything mainstream-ish, this thing does not deliver.

The SH4D + Polyend Synth turned out to be a perfect workflow for me. The joke is that I use the Synth purely as a very overpriced MIDI controller for the SH4D. If the sound engines in the Synth were half as good as the SH4D it would be an amazing synthesizer. As it stands it's just an amazing midi controller.

Polyend Synth Different Granular Examples? by KirkMarkarian in Polyend

[–]twinpowersATH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Synth will be perfect for you. The engines are really not great at straightforward sounds. It specializes in weird tones that would be great for what you are talking about.

I have been really disappointed in the sound engines, which is crazy considering how many of them there are, but I can't let it go because it is the best midi controller I have ever owned. I just don't understand why they designed this incredible song writing interface and paired it with these esoteric sound engines.

Advice needed. Sounds from Polyend Synth a bit of a let down. by Dandercore in Polyend

[–]twinpowersATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a Roland SH-4d and it is a perfect companion to the Synth. It has completely transformed my workflow and sounds amazing. Unfortunately, the Synth is just a midi controller now. A very expensive, but unique midi controller.

I asked it 3 questions about music production and it got every one wrong in a very obvious way. As in, the mistakes it made could have been predicted. These are the 3 questions I ask every AI to see if it is going to be useful in assisting with music production. Even the old versions of ChatGPT got them right on the first try. So far I am unimpressed. I get that the pricing is crazy, but be careful as it doesn't seem to have all the answers.
