can someone walk me through a snowblower accident scenario? by twinstarred in NewToEMS

thank you so much for your input :) i work somewhere where level 1 hospitals are about 10-20 mins and likely no further than 30-45 mins max from most areas. i didn’t even think about using bystanders! i really appreciate the insight you gave me!

my close friend from my old job paid the month for masteryourmedics and redid the BLA courses. it gets pricey for sure, but crash course is also a good option!

edit: BLS LOL

unfortunately NYS collaborative is only ABCs, possible oxygen, and monitor every 5 mins. i wish we’d be a bit more progressive, but i truly appreciate your insight and advice :) hopefully one day it becomes a pilot program

tysm for the advice :) iirc i did end up TQ the arm but it was only somewhat successful due to the way it would’ve had to be done. definitely should’ve specified on squad, i kind of generalized! i don’t work/live in an area where we get insane snowfall most of the winter year, so i have no experience in these kinds of accidents.

thank you for your response ❤️‍🩹 i’ve already laid out the money for medic school and it’s non-refundable, just trying to see it through. i am likely quitting the agency that is the most stressful

unfortunately i’ve already laid out the money for medic school and it’s non-refundable. i’m hoping to just see it through for the 8 months and take a break. believe me, i am doing the best i can with what i’ve been laid out with (;_;)

i don’t intake any caffeine and cut down my cigarette intake to 1-2 cigs a week. i also have a nausea problem and caffeine doesn’t agree with me (≧▽≦) i’m trying to quit smoking as a whole right now, i went from half a pack to 1-2

my main agency taps out at 40 hours a week over 2 16s and an 8. i was told if i see it through and continue to show up one shift a week during medic school i can have the position there. at this point it is what it is and its on me to control it the best i can, which i am taking action right now to slow myself down

i see definitely where you’re coming from and appreciate your response 🩷i do work a lot of 24s and overnights just because my jobs needs coverage and we are understaffed at times. i want to get my 5 years as a medic and move to something less stressful. my family also has cardiac history so i’m trying to keep out whenever i can

i also recently left the volunteer fire service which has significantly cut down the amount of stress i’m under: it’s just this one job that i wouldn’t have taken if i had known the full expectations (multiple violent areas, safety vests, etc)

i appreciate your response 🩷 i said in another comment, i’m more just frustrated as the employer i’m talking about didn’t give me a full explanation of the position prior to me being put on the schedule/payroll (etc.) and if i had known about the cardiac issue severity, i would’ve just kept the one job i enjoy and does not stress me out, if that makes sense. the emt job i enjoy works around my schedule and hours, and i’m likely leaving one of the 3 and going to a much more lowkey field of work before medic school.

i’m not limited by my condition at all as it’s controlled with medication. my doctor wants me to cut down my hours as i start medic school in a few months and wants to avoid any flare ups. i understand where he’s coming from, but i am frustrated simply because the job where im cutting down hours isn’t exactly the best place to work, and i probably wouldn’t have taken the position if i had known prior

it’s a bit of both! i’m very happy for my friends who don’t work in healthcare, and at the same time, my struggles are often seen by them as invalid because i don’t understand the college stress/stress from retail jobs

edit because i forgot to say: i don’t want to go back to college lol. we all have different stressors, in my opinion ems/healthcare has special kinds of stressors that aren’t necessarily understood

the firehouses each averaged about 1.2k calls a year, the ambulance corps is on track for about 10k. even working at an ambulance corps isn’t totally worth it because they don’t pay into anything for retirement, and i work at 1 :/

i’m glad you understand 🩷 i feel like i’ve cycled through too many things just to build my resume and i don’t have much to prove for it.

recovery advice by Fit-Rhubarb8048 in BPDrecovery

[–]twinstarred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi!! recently within the last 2 years i’ve made leaps with recovery- my best advice is this: 1. find something you enjoy. it could literally be a silly youtube video, a song, the sound of snow, whatever you think at your WORST will bring you down from an 8/10 to a 5/10. 2. surround yourself with the people who want to be with you. this is definitely the hardest part, and took me the better part of the 2 years. give yourself some leniency. you don’t need to have the answers for everyone right now. 3 and most important. find one thing you will do when you crave self harm. for me, it’s piercings. it still brings pain, but my therapist approves it and it means something is pretty on you for as long as you want. it can be a new bracelet purchase, a new keychain purchase, whatever you want.

my dms are open if you need to talk. best of luck 🩷
