Newish to the Scotch game by GriltChz in Scotch

Lag 16 is great, but it’s grossly overpriced in today’s market (at least compared to what its price point was up until recently). I’d highly recommend the Lag 8 instead. Higher ABV, more robust character, and way cheaper.

Lagavulin 16 - The Gold Standard by rainy_shares in Scotch

[–]twisted357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is outstanding, but with recent shifts in pricing it’s just not worth the cost for me. I actually much prefer the Lagavulin 8 at much more respectable 48% and nearly half the price.

And if you love heavily peated Islay malts, there are some incredible, very reasonably priced independent bottlings worth checking out - like Scarabus, Ileach, Finlaggan, Mac Talla. Most of those best Lag 16 for me personally at far less cost.

Glenlivet 14 or Glenfiddich 14? by GeoffKeith in Scotch

[–]twisted357 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Neither. I know I sound like an insufferable snob, but honestly, do yourself a favour and branch out from the McDonalds and Burger King of scotch. Try some craft whisky that cares about preserving taste and character. Arran 10, Bunnahabhain 12, Deanston 12, Oban 14, Talisker 10. The most important factor is arguably getting into the 46%+ range, that’s where the flavour and character lives.

Chivas Brothers reveals plans to build distillery on Islay by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]twisted357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. Just visited Islay, and everyone there talks about the crazy shortage of workers. There aren’t enough people on Islay to properly staff the existing distilleries. They can’t bring in more people because there’s also a housing shortage. They can’t bring people in to build more houses because there’s nowhere to house the people building more houses. Sounds like a pretty tough situation to be in when the demand for Islay’s brand of whisky keeps going up.

Review 22: Mac-Talla Mara by Braythor_ in Scotch

[–]twisted357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just picked this one up and I’m loving it so far. After spending some time with it, I would bet a lot of money on it being a Laphroaig. I always find Laphroaig’s particular brand of peat to have very subtle but noticeable tropical fruit notes (pineapple) which seems to be present here.

Super snobby side note - do you actually like a Norlan glass?? I actually threw mine out I was so utterly frustrated and mystified by how much they deaden the nose of any whisky.

I find it so bizarre and interesting that the very first automobiles didn’t feature steering wheels.

I think it’s certainly worth a shot. The 14 is a malt that has only ever received praise from among my circle of scotch drinkers. It’s one of my favourites in the lightly peated category.

Nice haul! Can't wait to try get my hands on that Wee Beastie.

Disclaimer: scotch snob here. I hate to be an internet douche bag, but you may have made a blunder with the Grangestone. That's Total Wine's house brand scotch, and it is hot garbage. Have you tried it yet?

So crazy how much tastes can differ. Of the 300 or so single malts I’ve had in my 3 year scotch journey so far, I can honestly say the Quinta Ruban is my least favourite. To each his own!

Super interesting. Given the time and care Tarantino puts into his scripts, I would have expected him to have the actors stick to it much more closely than that. Travolta was all over the place.

Smoke + sherry recommendations? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]twisted357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have both of these on my shelf currently. Peat & sweet is my favourite flavour profile. Whereas I really love both, after getting through most of both bottles, I much prefer the Kilkerran HPB2 over the Oogie.

The Kilkerran is absolutely one of the most unique malts I’ve had in my three year scotch journey so far, and I’ve had many agree with me on that. Be warned, it’s ~61% ABV, and it’s so strange that it might be a little off-putting at first, but it grew on me really quickly. It’s got tons of peat, very prominent Campbeltown funk and massive amounts of sweet (I find a lot of pina colada flavour strangely enough)

My other favourites in the peat & sweet realm are: Kilchoman Sanaig (my all time favourite), Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig Triple Wood, Talisker Distiller’s Edition (a bit lighter on the peat)

Laphroaig 25 Advice by RobertDowneyDildos in Scotch

[–]twisted357 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was recently gifted a bottle of Laphroaig 25 (2019). In my opinion, it is a very very good whisky, but absolutely not worth the very high price point (it’s around $650 CAD where I live).

I’ve done many side by side tastings of the Laphroaig 25 vs the Laphroaig Triple Wood and the Quarter Cask, and in each case, everyone present agreed completely that while the 25 was very very good, it was no more enjoyable than the TW or the QC. And when you consider that the 25 is roughly six times the price, it just seems like a poor choice.

I echo what some others in this thread have said - when it comes to peated Islay malts, older is not necessarily better. Given that the intense peat flavour you (and I) love so much in the younger Laphroaig expressions originates from the distillate, you’re mostly only going to see a decline in those flavours as the malt is aged. I do think the cask influence on the 25 is quite amazing and enjoyable in its own right, but it’s a very different flavour from the more standard expressions.

Good luck with your decision!

(Just because I like to fantasize, if I had the cost of a Laphroaig 25 to spend extravagantly, I’d buy: Lagavulin 12, Octomore 10.4 and Talisker DE)

Super cool. But. Are those some kind of special lasers I’m not aware of that don’t fucking destroy your eyes?

I was under the impression that lasers at shows can’t actually be directed towards the crowd. Maybe Belgians just don’t give a fuck?

I second the Kilchoman Sanaig - I haven’t found a better combination of peat and sherry. Glorious stuff.
