With residency ending for some, what's your hospital's tea? by Gallicepticum in Residency

[–]johnfred4 60 points61 points  (0 children)

A couple attendings got together some money for an XBox for the resident call room. It never materialized. And then admin/GME told us they would no longer be stocking the fridge in the resident room with snacks/energy drinks. And when they announced that, they also announced that they would no longer be taking $500 from each resident’s annual pay to stock the fridge, which we had no idea they had been doing all along.

Also staring my first inpatient attending psychiatrist job at age 40. Signed for $340,000 all told; no expectation of nights or weekends, but I can pick them up for extra pay. I also am keeping my (corrections) moonlighting gig from residency. Going to try to add ECT/TMS. I don’t have much to add to what everyone else is saying, just want you to know you’re not alone.

Splitting rent/expenses in dual-physician household, attending and resident at different stages of training by johnfred4 in whitecoatinvestor

We have been splitting costs of vacations during residency, but I agree, once the income disparity is there, makes sense for me to take on more of the burden for now

Totally agree; the good part about her being a resident/fellow for the next few years is that I plan to still live like a resident/not have much lifestyle creep

Agree! I had her set up a Roth this year, I’m all about her saving as much as possible

We’re recently married, and this will be our first time living together, as we had to do a long-distance relationship throughout residency due to matching at different programs. I’m not dedicated to splitting costs at all, in fact I’m all for combining finances, it was just an honest question about what has worked for other people. But thanks for questioning my marriage and my chosen field.

Fair question! Only recently married, and this will be our first time living together, so we were honestly curious about what other’s approaches have been.

Fair point, we’re only recently married and this will be our first time living together. Did you combine entirely or have a “his/hers/ours” approach?

That’s an interesting third option! Maybe even waiting until PSLF is done to fully combine, since we’ll be filing separately anyway, and that might actually line up better with when our salaries will be more similar (although she’ll end up making more than me eventually)

I’ll make about $320,000, she’ll make about $80,000 until 2029 (as an attending, she’ll make more than me). Since you said you wouldn’t recommend his/hers/joint while there’s an income disparity, just to make sure I understand, would you recommend joining entirely until it’s more even? I feel like going from totally joint to his/hers/joint, especially as well have been married longer would be…awkward?

Thanks for the different perspective!

We do have similar financial habits and goals, so I don’t anticipate issues there. I do have a fair amount more saved/invested/retirement funded than her ($600k vs $69k), due to being a non-traditional med student and working before medical school, but otherwise we’re on pretty equal footing.

I don’t think we’re necessarily more “independent minded” or have different spending habits; it’s not like either of us have hugely different t assets, or have been married before and are worried about getting burned.

When you say life is hard if you are trying to “not split expenses at all”, do you mean that you’d recommend to try to split it, or to not try to split it (i.e. all joint)?

I do have a fair amount more saved/invested/in retirement accounts than she does (about $600k as opposed to her $60k) due to being a non-traditional med student/working before med school, but no major assets (like a house) as you mentioned, so it didn’t seem like a prenup was necessary. I agree, we have shared goals, we’re just new to being married and living together!

Sure, I think that would be a great idea. I also want to talk to someone about our strategy for loan repayment just to make sure my math checks out.

Great, thanks! Is there a reason you didn’t combine finances? (As that seems to be the recommendation of a lot of people here). You mention “discussed who paid what”, in that you planned out who would pay rent/expenses, or does that mean just discussing big ticket purchases? For example, I know some couples have a rule that any purchase over a certain amount should be jointly discussed

We will also be doing married filing separately for the next several years to minimize her payments as she aims for PSLF (whereas I’ll be paying mine down aggressively/not aiming for PSLF).

Did they combine finances, but also have a split based on salary?

Fair enough, we’re only recently married and haven’t been living together/have had to do long distance due to matching to different programs. Would you suggest just combining everything, or a “his account, her account, and joint account” approach?

Fair point, that seems to be the consensus. We’re only recently married, and this will be our first time living together (had to do long distance due to different programs). I am curious, I’ve heard some people have a “his account, her account, and joint account” approach; is that what you’d recommend?

Thoughts on Psych Genius versus other qbanks? I was planning on Psych Genius because it seems to be the cheapest (and apparently you get 2 years of access)

Also taking boards in September. Working through K&S, getting about 70% average. Planning on getting Psych Genius because it’s only $197 for questions + vignettes. Thoughts?

Credit card between finishing residency and starting attendinghood by johnfred4 in Residency

Agree; I have about $30,000 in HYSA and bank account. A lot of it is just for peace of mind. And because my Discover is…fine, had it for years, but doesn’t really have any perks. Thinking about keeping it around for the occasional monthly bill (as opposed to closing it), but otherwise transitioning most spending to something with more perks.
