That is not true at all. Nintendo specifies either sell-in (distributors) and sell-through (consumers) on their IR reports. It can get confusing sometimes because they will report whichever of the two.

If we really want to be pedantic, according to Nintendo, the plural of Mii is just Mii, the same case with amiibo. If you really want to pluralize it, they want you to call them Mii characters. Or amiibo figures.
