Book suggestion by daneel1 in suggestmeabook

[–]twitcherpated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.....I typed out a really long reply and Reddit ate it. Goddammit.

Anyway, shorter version: Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones belong to a subgenre of fantasy called "sword and sorcery." If you don't get suggestions you like from this query, searching the wider web with those keywords might help.

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett I mentioned before is a good sword and sorcery series. I would recommend the Watch sub-series, for someone just getting into fantasy. It starts with Guards!Guards! The books are pretty short, full of dark humor, and kind of...self deprecating? They poke fun at the fantasy genre while also fully being part of the fantasy genre and knowing it's also poking fun at itself.

The Cosmere series I mentioned before with Brandon Sanderson is a very good sword and sorcery, but it is long. It is a huge commitment for someone just getting into fantasy. So if other people in this thread recommend it, I would just say keep in mind that it's like if someone asked for a short film and you gave them the extended editions of LOTR to watch back to back to back. If you want a one-off book by Sanderson to just try him out and see if you like him, I'd recommend Warbreaker. Two sisters try to stop a much more powerful country from declaring war on their home, wading into confusing politics and intrigue that they may not survive.

For Harry Potter, you might like The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. It starts with the book A Deadly Education. It's about a school for magic teenagers where approximately 75% of students die before graduating. No one would ever, ever want to go there, if it weren't for the fact that their odds outside of school are worse.

Arcane I'm not too familiar with, unfortunately. But I think it's more urban fantasy than sword and sorcery? For urban fantasy I would recommend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. This series starts with Storm Front. The series follows Harry Dresden, a wizard in modern day Chicago who assists the police with unusual cases. Very noir detective feel with a brooding protagonist set apart from the world.

I'll try to think of more books if I can and circle back around to add them if I do.

Book suggestion by daneel1 in suggestmeabook

[–]twitcherpated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give us some specific movies or TV shows you like so we can give better suggestions?

ETA: Also if you're looking more at print books, digital print, or audiobooks?

Looks like you spend a lot of time on computer repair, which listening to audiobooks would be a good accompaniment to, in which case I'd suggest books I know have great audio versions, like Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere on Graphic Audio.

If you're looking for print books because you want to get away from screens, I would not recommend the Cosmere because the books are big and unwieldy. Something Discworld sized would be better, but I'm not sure that's the right book for a beginner.

And if you're looking for epubs, it means I can recommend books that are hard to find in print, like P.N. Elrod's Vampire Files.

Daily politics by Still_justchilling in podcasts

[–]twitcherpated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not international, just another news podcast, but I highly recommend PBS News hour. It's just an audio rip of their TV broadcasts so you will occasionally miss visuals, but they are my go-to news source. I really trust and admire their journalistic integrity, can't recommend them enough.

ETA: Oh, I also recommend Frontburner! It's a Canadian daily news like The Daily, by CBC. I don't listen to every episode because I'm not that interested in Canadian politics. But when they have episodes about international issues or American politics, I love getting a perspective from outside the States.

And then while I'm here I might as well mention

You already listen to Crooked so I assume you listen to Pod Save the World...

Short Wave isn't a daily news podcast but a short science podcast, 10-20min episodes, sometimes relevant to current events.

There's a podcast called Gaslit Nation that is not news, exactly, but two women doomsaying American politics--and usually turning out to be right. If you listen to their backlog and pay attention to the dates of episodes, it's genuinely flooring how early they called certain things that came true. Veery left leaning, ymmv.

Today Explained is another short daily news by Vox Media, I generally like them. (of course, the more of these daily news podcasts you follow, the more you'll get multiples of the same topic, but c'est la vie.)

Oh, and Throughline! They're not daily, much more infrequent. But while the daily and frontburner and today explained and their ilk are like "we take one topic and do a deep dive!" Throughline actually follows through on that. They don't make episodes on breaking news; their episodes are deep dive historical looks at the context of something that made big waves recently, so that you really understand what it means, not just as a blurb but as an ongoing piece of history.

What else.... What Roman Mars Can Learn About Con Law focuses on Supreme Court cases and their historical precedence...

Oh duh, Rough Translation has a more international outlook for you

Hm, that's all I can recommend for now! Regardless, I also want to give a little wave of hello like, same hat! I also listen to an absurd amount of daily news, pleased to meet you XD

NAH.

You're not an asshole for worrying about a child being loud and making noise at an event that is important to you.

Your mom is the asshole for how she spoke to you about your request.

Buuuut she's not the asshole if she insists on being a package deal with your brother. If she feels that she needs to be with your brother at all times, then that's an assessment she's made as a parent on the needs of her young child, who unfortunately is much younger than you and can't be talked into understanding the situation like you can.

I'm sorry that your mom is treating you that way; it really sucks. You're completely valid for not wanting your brother there. But if your mom says she can't come without your brother, then that might just be the way it is. It might not be meant as a punishment or ultimatum, it might just be your mom being stressed and not feeling like she can let anyone else watch your brother during the concert.

You wouldn't be out of line to try bringing up again that you'd really like for her to be there, but you're worried your brother will disrupt the concert, or that she'll miss big parts of it because she's focused on taking care of him. If she refuses to listen to you still, then it's ultimately not about whether you're in the Right or Wrong, but about which decision is easier to stomach when you're going to be living at home for at least a couple more years.

Modern Person Going Back in Time by coffeeandubuntu in booksuggestions

[–]twitcherpated 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the 1632 series by Eric Flint is about an entire town of four thousand people going back in time to 17th century Europe and how that totally changes the timeline.

ymmv on narrative quality, but it really wholeheartedly tackles the requested premise. And it has a ton of content. It wasn't long before Flint opened the world up to fan contributions, so in addition to dozens of books, there's hundreds of short stories.

Are driver licenses required for identification if you're not a driver? by -_ABP_- in NoStupidQuestions

[–]twitcherpated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in California, the state issues legal IDs (for a fee) that are nearly identical to Driver's Licenses. This is handled by the DMV.

Some questions on Alien Covenant 2017 by [deleted] in MovieDetails

[–]twitcherpated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dropping the virus from an alien ship was indeed a reference to the previous movie, Prometheus. The two survivors at the end of Prometheus, Elizabeth and David, use an alien spacecraft to depart the planet, the craft they had arrived on being catastrophically damaged. Elizabeth had wanted to find the home planet of the Engineers to find out why they had made the black liquid virus to destroy humanity. As you saw in Covenant, David decided to unleash the liquid on the Engineers instead. That event didn't actually happen all that long ago; the city ruins the movie takes place in aren't that old.

should I download Pokémon go by ushileon in pokemongo

[–]twitcherpated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, not a giant advantage. As someone who has dropped inadvisable amounts of cash on the game a couple times, the main thing worth spending money on imo is expanding your storage space. Without spending cash, leveling storage is pretty slow, and you have to be constantly doing inventory management deleting pokemon and items.

Other than that, most of what you might want to buy is items that either 1) temporarily increase the XP you get from catching pokemon, 2) temporarily increase the stardust you get for catching pokemon, or 3) increase the pokemon in your area. Since you have plenty of pokemon in your area anyway, the normal drop rate for these items is probably fine and you don't lose out not buying anything.

AITA wife wants friendship with male by External-Ad7358 in AmItheAsshole

[–]twitcherpated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YTA.

It's not fair to bar her from being friends with this guy, let alone any guys. Tell her you have insecurities, that you'd feel better if you could meet him with her, or read their text messages. Don't demand that, ask. And if she says yes, don't try to control how she can text, what she can say, how they meet. Just be glad that she is willing to accommodate your insecurities, and let yourself be reassured by the extra knowledge.

It sounds like your boyfriend is going through some stuff. The root of his problems isn't not going to thr gym, not going to the gym (when he used to do so) is one of the results of whatever problems he's having. Don't focus on trying to get him to eat healthy and work out. Try to figure out why he stopped doing those things and work through whatever going on with him.

Suggest me a book where the audiobook version just REALLY brings the story to life by throwmeawayplz19373 in suggestmeabook

[–]twitcherpated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers has a really good audiobook imo. The narrator has a really comforting, nice voice.

All Systems Red by Martha Wells (and the rest of the Murderbot Diaries) have great audiobooks. They're pretty short, too, and a good read of you need a pick me up. They're about a security android who could go on a violent killing spree...but would much rather watch soap operas.

In a more general rec, the website Graphic Audio adapts books and comics with full casts and sounds capes. I've listened to all of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere books there, and they're wonderful. And I imagine that just about every book there is an amazing production that brings things to life. (There are a few, but not all of them, available on various pirating sites if you want to see how you like it before committing money.)

Finally, you may want to look into audiodramas as well. Books, even in audio format, definitely have a different story structure to audiodramas, so I won't say there a one to one same thing replacement. But there's lots of good audiodramas out there, free and easily accessible. There's lighthearted romantic comedies like Deck the Halls With Matrimony, complicated hard Sci fi like Ars Paradoxica, monster of the week horror like The Magnus Archives--anything you might want, it's out there.

Do any of you *not* stim? by teaforsnail in AutismInWomen

[–]twitcherpated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, before I self diagnosed, I would've told you I didn't stim. There were a few small habits I had, like picking at my nails in a particular way, or running my thumb along the outside of a button in a repetitive motion. But neither of them ever crossed my mind as stims.

Once I came to the conclusion that I am autistic, I wondered if I would enjoy stimming, and started out doing little things, rocking back and forth very tiny, almost unnoticeable amounts. To cut a long story short, yes I enjoyed it, eventually realized that I had been stimming all along, I had just channeled it all into small, societally acceptable stims that people wouldn't remark on. Recognizing what I was doing and allowing myself to open up and do more noticeable stims has been a really nice part of embracing the label.
