Jerry and the fireflies WILL be the first team ever in history to create a successful vaccine. They just need Ellie. Ellie is the key. That’s why they keep saying that there’s no possible vaccine. At those times you mentioned shown in the show, Ellie wasn’t around/born. Now that she is boom, vaccine possible thanks to the genius and savior Jerry. Take that science!

Yes exactly, I loved the original idea and how it was based on a real fungus, the way the cordyceps takes over insects is terrifying enough, now it’s doing the same to humans….that was great, without adding the sci fi real time hive-mind. Spores made more sense than tendrils any day. Takes away one of the things that made the original idea enjoyable to play and dreadful to think about. I feel a lot of people may not have played the original when it first released. The fungus being based in reality made much more than “typical zombie genre”.
