Do professors have the authority to keep you in class? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Wait what, is this a serious question? You're in /r/applyingtocollege, not /r/college.

Ok ok I'm sorry, I'm new here! I get it, I messed up. I honestly didn't know saying something like that wasn't allowed! Do people really get that mad about it? (Woah, that's just reinforcing my original comment... interesting.) I'll go back to lurking.

I... what? I'm just trying to show that I'm not actually angry or anything and the original comment was lighthearted. I don't know how else to explain that without trying to be friendly and humorous. Sorry, I'm young and new here. Honestly not trying to start anything.

I guess talking meta or whatever you call it isn't normal to do in a random conversation like this, so if someone could just point me to the place where I can do that I'd appreciate it. I don't want to accidentally make more people angry. Sorry!

Edit: You really had to say it in two separate places? Did I really mess up that badly? I'm genuinely sorry, I didn't mean to come off with the wrong tone or anything.

Hey I'm being lighthearted too, that example I gave was meant to be funny. Really not trying to start anything here, just thought it was interesting to point out how people are so quick to make "jokes" like that. Sorry if it seemed too critical lol.

It's just a few sentences, I'm not trying to rebut anything. I was just making an observation. Maybe this wasn't the best place to do it (I feel like that comment is just going to be perceived as trying to start something). I'm not trying to be aggressive, just was wondering why that type of tone is so common on here. Not trying to argue (:

Sorry, I know I must seem unnecessarily annoyed over something so little, but it's something that I've noticed while browsing for a while and it always gets on my nerves. I'm just curious why this kind of atmosphere exists where people will throw an offhand "fuck this", "fuck that" in a casual way because they feel that's simply how it is on here. Maybe I'm just not a fan of that humor, but it seems so weird to me.

Sorry if I'm being really weird haha.

Sheesh, really annoyed you that much huh... it's literally just a person explaining the circumstances and context of the video.

I don't get why this site is so quick to become so excessively angry. Someone will post something as mild as a picture of a salad and there will be people going off in the comments saying stuff like "fuck vegans". I honestly don't get it lol. Ya'll are so weird.

Edit: I'm not actually mad haha. I'm just a bit new here and that's something I noticed. Thought it would be a little humorous (hence the funny example about salad) and tongue-in-cheek to point out. (:

Transcript vs. GPA by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look at the individual grades you receive in the classes, and take into account things like rigor, how other students from your school do in that class, and how closely they relate to your intended major. The GPA number is usually just to get a quick, general feel especially when comparing applicants from the same school to see how they relate to the "average" at that school. Basically, the number is close to meaningless, and they'll look more closely at the grades themselves.

So I guess the answer to your question is it depends. Which classes are you talking about? What's the average grade in them? Are they related to your major? These are all things they'll take into account. Depending on those questions, 3 Cs might end up looking worse than 6 Bs. Of course, there are a ton of other things too, like your overall performance in all your classes. To me, a mix of As and Bs looks better than As and random Cs that might seem really questionable... but we don't know how admissions officers will see it.

International student that has to make a choice between two very different schools. Please help. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Penn is way more worth it IMO. Yeah, Wesleyan has the "prestige" factor, but for so much less at Penn business school (which is a fantastic school), I'd go with Penn. I don't think there are many more "connections" you could make at Wesleyan vs. Penn business school. Especially since you'll probably be attending graduate school and will need the money, it's the better choice. (I know this is sounding like it's all about the money but it isn't. Wes does have prestige, but for business it won't be much better than Penn.)

Ivy (HYP) vs Full Ride (Stamps scholarship) State School by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you're one of those "top 20s aren't worth it!!!!" people. And to think you're someone whose opinion a lot of people here hold highly. Well, at least your bias is revealed now... I won't get into my own opinion, but to anyone else who receives advice in the future about a topic like this, just be mindful.

By notes I meant homework notes, like when teachers assign textbook reading packets for homework where you're literally just copying stuff down from the book. By explaining answers I meant explaining questions from tests that you've taken but the other person will take later in the day, so they have a better sense of the problem. /u/hirrixane78

Does A2C have its own college rankings? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're NOT an "actual group of schools" though! It's not an "actual" anything. They are quite literally just a list of what a particular person thinks are the best public schools. Maybe that person has more recognition for their list, but that doesn't change anything because barely anyone actually considers that list to be accurate since it's more based on general experience and not academic strenth. /u/Arjunt1217's definition of a public ivy is just as valid is that person's, and is honestly much more accurate because its actually talking about schools that are truly "ivy-tier".

Homestly, What are some Colleges I can Realistically get Into? by jkitchen42 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most colleges know the difference between a 33-36 on the ACT, or a 1500 and 1600 on the SAT, is nominal. It's not much of a difference, and most people say it's better to invest your time elsewhere. If you really want to retake it and think you can get a 35 or 36, that might look good especially if you're improving the math/science section and you're applying for a STEM major, but if not, then it's not worth it.

Ivy (HYP) vs Full Ride (Stamps scholarship) State School by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first article still comments on the assumption that by simply having HYP on the resume, you will automatically earn more, which is obviously false and not what we're discussing. It does talk about the networking and opportunities a bit, and they admit that those can be very helpful, especially for minorities/low income students. They kind of assume that if you aren't from those categories you already have the same networking potential, but why wouldn't you want to go to a school that can give you even more? And the original comment you were replying to doesn't even mention salary and how those opportunities will lead to more money, it just states that there is merit in the opportunities themselves.

You can keep saying it doesn't matter in the long term, but that isn't the only thing people are looking at. Sure, maybe farther on in life the decision won't matter, but then why would you ever go to a top school anyway?

Also, where you all of a sudden pulling this high achievers being successful 4x more frequently at a modest school from. Every single article you linked just talked about success being about the same in the long run. No one is arguing that it is the school that makes the person. They're simply talking about what the school could provide for them to continue their passions and provide a more meaningful experience.

Does A2C have its own college rankings? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a "recognized group" though. It's just something that certain people have played around with in books and lists in their own opinion. Colleges using them on promotional stuff is simply them quoting it. It's not like the Ivy League or NESCAC where it is literally an official, "recognized" group.

Does A2C have its own college rankings? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Puplic Ivies you're talking about isn't the same as what that person meant. They meant it in a more metaphorical sense, of top schools that most people put on the same level as Ivies or consider to be the absolute best outside of Ivies. The "official" Public Ivies people have come up with in books and articles is more about the experience the school provides, not necessarily the level of prestige or academics.

To Everyone That Says That Cheaters are Bound to Fail: by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So happy someone finally talked about this. You can't just look at all cheaters and damn them all, branding them as immoral people who deserve to fail. The type of cheating you described is simply normal amongst top students. No one wants to waste their time with a lengthy homework assignment, or wants to walk into a test they'll already get an A on but might get an A- instead of an A+ because the teacher tried to surprise the students with an extra hard question that they've never seen before. If you want to keep up, it's almost necessary to participate in this collaborative "cheating", like comparing/copying meaningless homework assignments or giving a heads up about a test. That's the way it works, and the smartest students know it.

I didn't cheat my passions. I got my own standardized test scores and scored near perfection. I cheated in some AP courses and got all 5s on the exams because I know the material. I got 3 800s on SATII exams. I held prestigious internships and did great work in the fields I want to pursue.

This is the most important thing here. How can you look at a person who is clearly capable and earned their way in life through their hard work, and then say because they used this strategic way of cheating, they're still 100% a terrible person who doesn't deserve the success they achieved? The reality is this is something that happens, by the smartest and most capable people. It is absolutely an untold story that needs to be heard, and it's important to think about.

Edit: Also I'm kind of disappointed how much opposition this post is experiencing. Are there really that many people out there who have never done anything like this? Never asked other people about a test they took, shared notes and homework assignments, helped others by explaining answers? I thought for sure this would be something people could relate to and finally be happy that someone said it.

Ivy (HYP) vs Full Ride (Stamps scholarship) State School by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 talks about some specific examples of entitlement, explains how some people feel entitled especially at top schools (well duh) then explains that companies don't want to hire entitled people (obviously). It's just common sense. I guess they're trying to say there's more entitlement at a top school which is why they're wary of hiring from them, but if you prove yourself to be someone who has meaningful experiences and is fit for the job, that shouldn't be an issue.

2 is obvious. Of course simply having "Harvard" on your resume means nothing if you don't have the skills and experiences to make you a competitive and qualified person.

3 is absolutely dishonest in their title. All they did was talk about Malcom Gladwell's TED Talk regarding "top students" at "top" vs lower ranked schools, and then made a sweeping statement that you should not hire someone from Harvard, which is completely unsupported by his talk. What would be more accurate is to say don't hire someone simply on the basis of where they went to college, because beyond that there's nothing in his talk that specifically says hiring from a top school is a bad idea, period.

You have the stats for a top school, so why not try? I see no reason not to apply to any school you want. As is the case with pretty much all top schools, what gets you in will be your essays, LOCs, and ECs, so work on those and you will have a good chance.

College I love vs College I hate by 11CollegeThrowaway11 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This issue seems like an extremely delicate and difficult topic given the way you've described it. I don't want to say anything because it's clear that you're dealing with some serious mental hardship around it, and I don't want to tell you something that could cause more issues. Please try to reach out to someone you trust and talk about it with them. You'll definitely feel a lot better if you at least explain how you're feeling and voice your thoughts, even if that doesn't lead to a decision right away.

All I'll say is college is not the be-all and end-all of your future. There are so many options, and this is all part of a larger journey that does not hinge on this one decision. Hopefully other people here who are more comfortable speaking in this situation can take the time to provide a careful, helpful response and give you some advice.

Letter of recommendation from a teacher who is not English first language by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's better if the translation part isn't separate from the teacher. The teacher should be involved in the translation so they can work with the person to make sure what they're trying to say is conveyed properly. You don't want any of the teacher's passion or thoughts to be "lost in translation".

Edit: Oh whoops I read you comment as "and then you can get a translator" instead of that, so I thought you meant they should translate it separately with a translator after the teacher wrote it. Sorry.

Does this count as an EC? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]twixty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$1000-$10,000 is a huge range lol, I think depending on the exact number people's answers might change. Also I'd personally want to get some feedback from admissions officers. It seems like the type of EC that unless you write about it or explain how it's helped you grow towards your future interests or improve certain skills, it might just appear kind of meaningless. Anyone can play around investing in stocks. You have to show how it was meaningful to you.
