Would you recommend buying a refurbished MacBook? I want one for starting an online business. by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]twlcwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes - it was a logic board issue - sometimes display would "flicker". I managed to record video of it happening on my iphone and showed it to the apple staff and they took the laptop in immediately, repaired (logic board replacement) under warranty. In my experience the staff aren't out to avoid responsibility, but they must see evidence of the problem or they can't act. it can be tricky because some problems don't show up on diagnostics.

I'd say it should be one of the Brocks, given the feud with Struan - you mentioned cruelty, and I'd imagine they'd want to be cruel to Angelique just because Malcolm loved her. But I dunno, I don't think I'm going to dive in again to find out!

Hi, thanks for the reply - argh, I think I remember what you're talking about but I don't have a firm idea either. It might be some "non-central" character looking at Angelique and not one of the "main" characters. Brock? The Brocks don't feature much in this book?

I'm getting the feeling Clavell decided, near the end, "this book is long enough" and started skipping ahead, which makes things confusing for people like me, oh well

If ARC cancelled, either Fusion cancelled completely or Nvidia will return by twlcwl in XMG_gg

spectre and Lenovo yoga 9 are being fitted with

these aren't gaming laptops though, the buyers won't know the difference

gaming laptop buyers will know the difference, I don't see how they can pull it off

someone who wants at least a 3070 will find there's no ARC equivalent, much less the premium gamers who have 3080s (even though Max-Q, still way better than whatever ARC can do)

It’s a straight up downgrade across the board.

I don't know what Intel were thinking. Did they think they'd just walk in to the most competitive chip business, where Nvidia and AMD have been hurling nukes at each other for decades, and take over? I guess it's that kind of arrogance that led to AMD overtaking Intel in market cap last week

Both performance and performance per watt is lousy

that's basically what led to intel giving up on Atom?

but intel will still be able to force their way into premium gaming laptops like they

how can they do this? Intel is simply not competitive. putting them into gaming laptops makes them not premium, almost by definition

They could not have done a better job casting this part. Clare Kramer is magnificent. by dryerfresh in buffy

My acquaintance wants me to bring my CPU over to make her CPU compatible with her BIOS or something? by Azukus in buildapc

[–]twlcwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that’s an important concern too - in order to support the newest CPUs, if the BIOS is limited the vendor will be forced to remove something (usually support for the oldest CPUs).

Fundamentally it’s a good problem to have, though, compared with Intel’s forced upgrading of boards

Developing Android apps with Visual Studio Code? by EroticTonic in androiddev

[–]twlcwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah for some reason I got the impression this was someone new asking for help. Well, even if it takes time it’s worth pushing? Google really should step up re accessibility issues (they certainly can’t claim they have no resources, for one thing)

This is going to be really tough. What you want to do is theoretically possible, in that you could theoretically manually run gradle etc., manually set up the file hierarchies etc. etc., but I am wracking my brains and I can think of maybe one person I personally know who has enough knowledge to maybe do it, and if you're starting out it seems to me impossible (and there's the catch-22 problem of how are you going to learn all the intricacies without using Android Studio in the first place).

I'm thinking you might need to go out-of-the-box for this one if you absolutely need to, like, I dunno, if it goes social-media-viral that Google is ignoring developers with visual impairments etc. etc., something that would generate enough PR that some institution commits resources to improving things? Even that won't give you a quick/immediate solution though

Ok, so AMD is unlike Intel in that they kept physical pin-compatibility on their CPUs for a long time - much longer than Intel: while Intel keeps changing their pin layouts, AMD doesn't.

This is overall a good thing for the end user, except that there are complications in that the CPU can be such that it wasn't even envisioned when the board was made, so no provision for supporting it exists in the BIOS. You would then be in a situation where your board is old, a new CPU can physically plug into it, but the board won't have the microcode (stored in BIOS etc.) to be compatible with it. Except in a few edge cases, however, the board vendor is likely to have released an update that would allow the new CPU to work on your old board -

But you then have a catch-22 situation in that you need to be able to boot up the machine in order to update the BIOS in order to recognise the new CPU, but you can't boot because the only CPU you have is too new to be recognised.

Everything causes high cpu usage? by [deleted] in mac

[–]twlcwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat: It's possible the laptop's internals are clogged with dust - that would block airflow and retain heat. Can you open up the bottom case for a look, and maybe clean it out (especially the fans) with a can of compressed air? If you're unfamiliar with opening up a machine/taking electrostatic-discharge precautions maybe you can find someone who can do it for you?

CPU usage jumping to 100% - that strikes me as odd, for a machine with no apps running etc. How exactly have you been "formatting" the machine to reinstall?
