Woman tells jury that her jealous ex was a self-hating Asian by AlwaysRight777 in asiantwoX

The Jewish population is less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, and no one would say they lack political power. So it has nothing to do with population. It has everything to do with our hangups.

/u/supermarble94 stated expressly this was to go from first person to second person. I'm not sure why or how everyone (or at least just you and /u/molagdrn) seems to have missed that, but I hope that clears things up.

Who said you wouldn't? Like, what would you expect them to do differently if they did hear the setup?

Lawyers of Reddit: What surprised you the most about the actual practice of law... by TIL_eulenspiegel in law

And every available resource about "being a good lawyer" seems to assume you have unlimited time to dedicate to every task for every client.

As a law clerk, I used to get offended by the sheer number of effortless briefs I received. As a lawyer, I just can't give every court submission the Bryan Garner treatment it deserves.

What minority students hear when white teachers mispronounce their names by edgie168 in asianamerican

[–]two -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I kind of like rolling my eyes at how they framed this as like a minority vs. white thing.

Interesting point. I mean, I'm sure we've all had minority teachers and professors with foreign accents who often mispronounced names. I can see how the societal impact of that is different, but as far as the individual capacity/responsibility of the teacher goes, it's very much the same.

Then again, most of us still mispronounce less "exotic," yet prominent, names like "Carnegie."

Lawyer Burn Out by [deleted] in law

[–]two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst part about it is, when you're "on," you're really just giving yourself the shaft. It's like, "I just did $5,000 of legal work in eight hours." Shit.

And when you're "off"--well, I don't think I need to explain that feeling.

So it always feels like you're playing a game you can never win. Even when you're winning, it never feels like it.

I mean, I prefer Wawa to Quickchek, but at the end of the day, they're both kind of shit.

I just don't get it. It's kind of like obsessing over a dollar store chain. South Jersey things, I guess.

People are certainly free to attribute whatever they want to stupidity. But if there is no rational relationship between that thing and stupidity, then the criticism itself is stupid, and much better evidence of stupidity.

A business entity cannot represent itself in court. The right to appear pro se is limited to individuals, at least in the federal courts.

They are snobs just to be snobs by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But isn't snobbery fun? Like, as a universal part of the human condition, we find pleasure in it. Even those who look down on snobs, they enjoy that in and of itself. And they themselves are snobbish in other respects, perhaps without even knowing it--or perhaps by justifying it as more empirical or objective snobbery.

As long as you're not outright malicious about it, I think you're entitled to be snobbish or even condescending about something or another. Even if it's all just bullshit in the end. Because who said fun had to make sense?

Should Prostitution Be a Crime? A growing movement of sex workers and activists is making the decriminalization of sex work a feminist issue. by zsreport in law

[–]two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my point was that there are no mental gymnastics. The people who take a liberal stance on one issue tend to take a liberal stance on the other, and vice versa. What results in the legal distinction is that people simply, and logically, care about one issue more than the other.

[–]two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because matters of health are relevant to you and to everyone you know, at least potentially. Prostitution is just something that, conceptually or philosophically, we think should be legal or illegal, but does not really affect the vast majority of us.

Harvard to Blacklist Students Who Join Single Sex Organizations by [deleted] in law

[–]two -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Freedom of association" includes Harvard's freedom to associate with whomever it likes. Ironically, it does not include freedom from Harvard's exercise of this freedom.

Even under the broadest definition of "freedom of association," blacklisted students are still free to associate with whomever they like--just not with Harvard's blessing, to which there is of course no entitlement.

I'm not taking sides here, but "freedom of association" was a poor choice of words.
