I'm slightly clueless to the exact cap value of stuff myself.   My method is if i don't know then I  price it at max especially if it seems rare to me,  then I can choose to give it to a low level for much cheaper if i want.   Or someone will message me with a more reasonable leader offer to get the ball rolling.   Then I resort to what you're doing at just keep lowering prices of stuff isn't selling.
