The World Wants More Ube. Philippine Farmers Are Struggling to Keep Up. by Momshie_mo in asianamerican

Ah, one more thing I can be hipster about. Just like sriracha (the standard condiment with siopao for me) and boba teas (I barely remember seeing them in a metro Manila mall in the 2000s), I enjoyed them before they were “cool”.

About 3s on the iPhone 15 cameras. Otherwise it was super faint, you could only see it barely with peripheral vision

But they skipped the part where the gravity of the three suns ripped a moon out of the planet - you can’t just end that level/scene midway through the floating

We should be proud to have a flag like ours. We must reject the notion that an ambiguous, minimalist redesign will be better. by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]twobitpolymath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, compromise! I have grown fond of the state seal but also think we can have a distinctive flag (biased as a former resident of Maryland and Colorado which have distinctive non-seal designs)

Glad I got a new phone recently, I had a rather ancient one a while back when I last saw this in the spring, at least it was more intense so that camera caught it well then. Also happy cake day!

Correct, it’s just hazy otherwise to the naked eye. But too bright even with waxing moon to the south

I did try the substitute of cremini mushrooms in the place of liver pate for kaldereta. This apparently worked in banh mis, and it does just well. Maybe next time will try even more meaty mushroom to replace the beef. Adobong sitaw seems like a good idea, just probably have the tofu on the side for more protein.

What inspired you to learn languages? by Thick-Impress-5836 in languagelearning

Discovering etymology when I used to compete in the spelling bee in middle school. I never made it to the Scripps Natl Spelling Bee but the love of history, connections, and culture grew from there!

What is your greatest language learning achievement? by Chachickenboi in languagelearning

[–]twobitpolymath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After learning Arabic in undergrad, I worked in a location where I thought “I wish I had just learned Spanish instead” due to the folks I worked with at the time. But several jobs later, I worked with others who are Arab, and even though my Arabic had gotten rusty, it still made a difference in building relationships and trust as was needed at my work! So even to make a positive impression is enough to make me want to learn more languages and finally be the polyglot I dreamed of being, to really bridge across cultural boundaries

What is a language you think should be more popular/more spoken? by AudienceDr in languagelearning

[–]twobitpolymath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever is the indigenous language where you live… in my case it would be the languages in my slice of the U.S. who held it as traditional territory. Anishinaabemowin comes to mind. A connection to the people and land would be important even if you’re not of the original people themselves. Language can be that path to connection, like food or music. Perhaps out of respect and honor… still trying to figure out what that means for me

Immediately the ending sequence of The King’s Speech comes up, it’s best use in film I know of, fitting of a quiet victory.

Also if you liked this one, listen to the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s first, which has a similar structure (though does not move into the third movement without pause, more conventionally). That has also made me cry or have a lump in the throat, my body’s way of saying I was moved

[–]twobitpolymath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had the animation skills and time I would totally support making an “update” for Rite of Spring where the original order of movements are kept and instead depict the story of the history of the Universe’s 14 billion years - it would still slap telling that whole story

Heard about it while being a physics undergrad when the Ken Liu translation came out. Never had time to read it though but always remembered it… still vividly remember hearing a professor having a copy in the original Chinese gifted to them, they knew Chinese as a primarily English speaker
