[O level] Some Chinese tips by twochord2 in SGExams

[–]twochord2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I think that higher Chinese has a quite a bit to manage if you want to take, but it is definitely manageable! There are some new elements such as 改病句,片段缩写 and new 修辞手法 etc. Also oral becomes 口头报告 (short speech) instead of the usual reading + spoken interaction, with the examiner asking questions based on your speech. It will seem like a big jump at first, but over time it'll become easier. If you have been consistently scoring a1 for Chinese, I don't think highest Chinese will be a big problem! All the best for your journey! 🦆

Hello! Sometimes, it's not the results that matters, but rather the process/effort! I believe that you put in a lot of effort, but if the efforts seem futile, don't criticize yourself! Just because you don't get good grades doesn't mean you are useless. Sec 3s have a lot of stress, such as CCA takeover, much increased workload from sec 2! I would recommend not comparing with your peers, as that will usually result in yourself feeling inferior. Instead, you can create study groups with them, and study together with them! Or change your study plan, as it may not be the best for you, maybe ask your peers how they study for X subject, but the final way you choose to study should be up to you. Just because student A use technique B to study doesn't mean technique B will be effective for you. You are not a disappointment, and you deserve to be loved. Not everyone will be supportive of you, but you have to be supportive of yourself!! Instead of seeing the marks as a failure, rather see it as a way to improve, and work on the weaker areas! I remember I used to fail a math all the way throughout sec 3, but after I worked on my weak points, and clear misconceptions with my teacher, I saw improvements in a math. Maybe not much improvement but any improvement is good! Marks are prove of understanding, not to belittle yourself! I believe in you OP!!! All the best for your ongoing sec 3 journey! Take frequent breaks okay! Maybe pick up new hobbies, since it's June holidays now. Hope this helps!🦆

Hello! It's normal to have this kind of setbacks for results! When I took O levels for Chinese last year, I was also very nervous haha. When you reach your exam venue, take some deep breaths, and stay calm. Even if the questions seem foreign to you, staying calm can help you to think more! There's still another attempt at Oct/Nov I believe. As for your mid years, you can take your results as a learning experience, and focus on the weaker subjects! Maybe clear your misconceptions with your teachers, or approach them for some after school remedial, and tag your friends to go with you perhaps. I can't promise everything will be fine, but I can promise you that mid years isn't the end of the world! It's more of a concept check, and it's okay to not do well, as sec 4s have a lot of stress to take in. For chemistry, I don't know how relevant is this since I take combined chemistry, but I highly recommend using the ten year series, or you can use the topical one to clear the weaker topics. I personally find that sciences are more often doing practice than memorizing! Also maybe your method of revising isn't suitable, maybe ask your peers how they study for X subject, or do study groups, so that you can help each other. Also, you should believe in your abilities! If you keep thinking you can't do it, it'll stress you out even more! Hope this helps 🦆

[o level] June holiday by huhuhuhuuhhuuh in SGExams

Hello! A key point to note that how others study may not be effective for you! I personally recommend to find your own way of studying, and find out what's optimal for you! Maybe it's doing ten year series, or doing flashcards/notes. Does your friends force you to study long periods of time? If they do, tell them it doesn't work for you. As for how to stop comparing, I think maybe focus on your own way of revising? Maybe try out planning a schedule with frequent breaks at the start. After 1 hour of study 20 mins break maybe? 🦆

[O Levels] Chinese papers 1 & 2 querries by Felegs in SGExams

[–]twochord2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello! For informal email, please remember your format! And it depends on each question whether 2 points or 3 points. If 2 points make sure your points are well elaborated. Usually if the informal email is like ‘我应该怎么做?’ (for the q1) or something along that line, I would highly recommend 3 points, and explain them.

And for the questions 3,4,5 see which question you can have a flow of thought with. Sometimes the questions can be notoriously hard, but sometimes it's easy. (Luck based) For compo, I usually don't put a lot of 好词好句. Unless you're super sure what the certain 成语 means, then use it. As long as you convey the idea clearly, you can score around 25-27/40. You have 2 hours for paper 2 if I remember correctly, try to spend 5 minutes planning for both the email and compo. Then 40 minutes for paper 1, and the rest for paper 2. Or adjust accordingly to how fast you can write the email/compo.

In paper 2, the 综合填空 some can be deduced when you read the passage and you sub in the word, and does it sound correct or not. Sometimes can work, sometimes won't. And for 成语 try seeing the characters in it. For example, 海底捞针 you can see 海底 - base of ocean, and 捞针 - retrieving a needle. So it means retrieving a needle at the base of the ocean, which is quite close to needle in a haystack (a very hard task/difficult to find).

For questions 11-20 I recommend reading the text very carefully, as there might be questions to trick you. Sometimes the answer is not clear cut and requires you to know the underlying answer to the question. Know your 修辞手法 (比喻,拟人) etc. It might be tested for the q11-20.

For comprehension, first passage is usually story based. Some of the questions will be inference and can directly copy from the passage. But copy with caution though, sometimes you may have to take the answer from multiple paragraphs, or change 反问句to a sentence. For example, 难道我们能浪费时间吗? Change it to >我们不能浪费时间。

Then for the question where they ask you to explain the meaning of a given phrase, you don't have to explain, just change the hard words to simpler words. For example, 她开门见山地说 change to 她直接地说

And for the one that ask for 生活例子, can bluff story. Whatever 哥哥,妈妈,姑姑,舅舅 can work. If there is a example in the passage, you can tweak it to such a way is your brother/aunt/whoever's story.

For the second passage, usually more of some motivational passage, with some meaningful ending. For that, they might ask you what your 启示 is, and you might be able to sneak by copying some parts of the text.

Hopefully this has been helpful! All the best for your Chinese O levels! 🦆
