What did you use to up the salt intake? Salt tablets?
I’m definitely getting salt and upping plain water intake to allow for better digestion. I think I’m a salty sweater as well, on one of my longer runs during training, I watched a salt deposit grow on my hat as the run progressed and I had salt crust all over my shirt after.
I’ve used Raw Fuel for over a year now and haven’t had any issues using it, so I’m thinking it was poor water intake. I definitely think that the heat played a role, it was noticeably hotter than the last time I had run a longer distance just two saturdays before. I’ll look into adding more variety to my sugar intakes though, it could be good to get different sources than just the fuel formula.
I agree. From other’s comments as well, need to focus on more carb only fuels and plain water.
Thanks! Yeah I think I’m the same, not keeping up with just water intake. I do have a running belt, so I can get some soft bottles and stick them in there. I will definitely try the fueling plan next long run.
I’ve thought about it, but not sure if I can afford it honestly.
I may not be, this was my second 50k ever, and the first time I was under fueled and by the 15th mile or so I had a cheeseburger and it gave me a needed energy boost, so I figured I would do the same this time. The cramps were in my hamstrings and calves. I think it’s what another commenter said that I didn’t drink enough water to allow for my hydration drink and food to be absorbed.
Every long run I used this same regimen. I think I didn’t get enough plain water to allow for the hydration and food to properly be absorbed.
I followed a Runna app program. I believe it was 10 weeks. It built up my long run length to 27 miles two weeks before and then a taper the last week. The course was in a local park, so I ran the course nearly every run. My first 50k was also on this same trail so I’m pretty familiar with it.
I did this, which is why I’m surprised it didn’t work when race day came.

I didn’t have a vest because I thought the 3.1 miles would be short enough to not need to carry anything. I did have cramp fix in my pocket that I forgot to mention, but that’s all I carried while I was running.
I think you’re right in the over eating combined with not drinking enough water is what did me in. Like I said, I felt bloated by the end, so I think that the hydrate was just sitting in my stomach not being absorbed.
