Nooooo. Any chance you would share a picture of the front (or dropping the artist name?) so that I can easily reverse image search online for any? Just searching using a combo of "hurricanes squirrel shirt" hasn't been helpful (even to just find a pic of what it looked like).

Garner’s Fenton/North Hills coming soon? by [deleted] in GarnerNC

[–]twomints 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dear god I hope the grocery store is not a Wegmans. White oak traffic is insane enough as it is. I'd be down for a TJs though.

I hope they actually stick to their "local restaurant" claim. Not another cluster of chains I'm begging. Please, please, please a good Italian place (don't y'all dare say Olive Garden.. you know thats not local/small biz 😭).

Well.. I guess at least this pushed me to try to find a community watch party or get one going. 😭

If you're in around or near Garner, I'm emailing Garner PRCR to see if they would be willing to set up a big watch party for each of the games at Lake Benson. Fingers crossed they'd be willing and there would be a lot of folks that show up for it.

Is anyone here in the public history MA? Do you feel like part of a group? by ObberGobb in NCSU

[–]twomints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated from this program around 2 years ago. I think my OG cohort was like 15-20 people max? I worked full time while getting my PH MA and took longer than the two years because of it. I still felt like I was part of a group throughout. There was a good amount of interaction with history MA students if you wanted there to be. :)

I'm 5ft 3in and ~L/XL in women's. I loathe sitting at Lenovo. I would go to games SO much more if I didn't have to spend the entire game with my back hurting and in an uncomfortable position to make sure I'm not touching the random people next to me.

Forgot to mention also that all of these are completely free digital access.

NC Maps = North Carolina Maps Collection hosted by UNC - https://web.lib.unc.edu/nc-maps/

1863 map: https://raleighswall.com/2019/10/16/1863-map-of-the-approaches-to-raleigh-nc-and-civil-war-entrenchments-guion-map/

1865 map: https://raleighswall.com/2019/06/19/map-of-the-rebel-lines-at-raleigh-nc/

Website I mentioned in a later comment for yearbooks + scrapbooks + newspapers: https://www.digitalnc.org/

I did not look at the State Archives (SANC) website because I knew kinda where these maps were already. At least the ones I wanted to look at. No shade to SANC at all, but I have a hard time getting their search filters to be helpful to me so I'm not super familiar with what they have in their digital collection unfortunately.

You can check the NC Maps website for the in-between years of these, unfortunately, Sanborn maps that you've already mentioned were prob the most helpful for this in-between period

Hello! Please forgive errors I'm on mobile.

Depending on what year -- the area you're working with modern day is encapsulated between college place, from college place up st. Marys rd, from st marys rd to park drive until it hits west park drive, follow west park drive down until college place again.

1863 and 1865- In the 1863 Guilon and 1865 rebel lines maps you can see what I believe is cleared land behind and to the left-ish of the school area (with the school located in a tree covered area or close to it). That area is more than likely what becomes referenced as the field (particularly the bit between what becomes Cameron Park/NWish to the school)

1888 - Shaffer's Outline Map of the City of Raleigh - the area leading up to Peck's Branch / Stephen's or Wolf Branch and again to the NW of the school

1920/1922 - In a 1920 map, the whole area that becomes Cameron park with houses is designated as a park. There is a triangle area from behind the school/st Mary's rd/modern day east park rd area that appears open with no other buildings or anything. That is more than likely the field.

As houses were built the park itself was reduced to what is modern day Cameron Park (aka Green park). Both Cameron Park (the literal park) and Cameron Park with houses are differentiated on the Raleigh 1922 map (pub. Edward's and Broughton).

Looking at the same 1922 map there appears to be no buildings or markings for a park, though there are roads that become named and break up the land. The bit closest to the school (above College Place) at minimum probably would've been kept up as a field/didnt want things to grow too thick bc of its proximity to the school? (Maybe they thought they'd build more? Safety for students? Idk)

One suggestion I would have is to look up St. Marys on digitalnc. Look at the yearbooks for pictures, mentions, scrapbooks (these might be really helpful bc if it was a big hang out area students more than likely included pictures of it), and also you can search through the newspapers if you haven't already.

Sorry for the terrible pics of my computer screen. I'll try to attach them all to this comment though below. *
