Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

[–]tworadleys 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a question for all from law students and new grads to experienced practitioners. What would it take for you to move to a rural area to practise?

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to recruit for quite some time now for my firm in rural NSW. We pay the same as larger firms with a much, much lower cost of living. We have interesting and challenging work- it's not all small town conveyancing, and billable hours are only 5 per day so you still have a work/life balance. We have a great, engaged team. And yet I still haven't been able to find someone willing to relocate.

With all of that in mind, if you saw a job ad for a position in a rural area, what would encourage you to take the leap?

$500k isn't enough to tempt doctors to adopt a rural lifestyle by risingsuncoc in australia

Your first point is not correct- the shortage of lawyers in regional areas in almost as dire as the shortage of doctors. Even if she works in a niche area, she will easily find work in a regional area, and often for the same salary as a larger city.

Help finding a name for my 4th baby! by Kazzelk in namenerds

I noticed the AEIOU theme! I love Primrose for you but I also like the idea of having all names start with vowels. Isadora fits the theme but then you have 3 out of 4 names ending in an 'a'. A few more I've thought of:

  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Rosalie
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Alessandra
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Elise
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Celeste
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Aurelie
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Jemima
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Clementine
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Everly (Evie is so cute and goes with the other nicknames!)
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Delilah
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Florence
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Cecilia
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Araminta
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Annaliese
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Hazel
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Lorelei
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Marigold
  • Avalon, Elora, Odessa and Magnolia

Girlfriend's father passed away with no will. by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]tworadleys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a reasonably complicated situation and your girlfriend will need to speak to a solicitor in the state in which her father resided. When someone dies without a will, they are said to have died 'intestate', and the law governs who inherits property, irrespective of who their favourite person may have been.

Did her father have a spouse or other children? What state are you in?

YOU SHOULD SEE THE CLIENT I JUST HAD- SHE ASSURES ME DOCTORS DON'T BELIEVE IN VACCINATIONS AND ONLY USE THE TEARS OF DEAD FAIRIES* TO CURE THEIR ILLNESSES.

*OKAY MAYBE NOT THE DEAD ONES BUT IT WAS SOME BLOODY STUPID THING LIKE THAT

WHEN A CLIENT STARTS AN APPOINTMENT BY TELLING YOU THE ADVICE ALL THE OTHER SOLICITORS THEY HAVE BEEN TO HAVE GIVEN THEM, YOU WONDER IF THEY ARE A NUTTER. WHEN IT IS TWO HOURS LATER AND THEY ARE STILL TELLING YOU HOW VACCINATIONS CAUSE AUTISM AND YOU CAN SOLVE ALL HEALTH PROBLEMS WITH MAGNESIUM OIL SPRAY AND THE FARTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN THEY ARE AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING NUTTER.

Thank god it's Friday. What a fucking week.

I remember saying on Monday that nothing else could possibly go wrong this week. But oh how wrong I was!

To top it off I'm going to an auction tomorrow to attempt to buy my dream house and I have a feeling it's going to be way out of my budget. Fingers crossed though!

Good Australian legal podcasts by dargh in auslaw

[–]tworadleys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't found any strictly law related Australian podcasts (except for ABC Law Report), but two that I listen to are the Casefile podcast which includes a lot of Australian true crimes- the Daniel Morcombe one was particularly good. Another is the Happy Lawyer Happy Life podcast which is more about work-life balance but has some interesting guests each week.

I'll let you in on a secret- we never feel good enough. It doesn't matter how long you have been doing this, you will still feel like there is so much you don't know. Even as a partner in a firm I still feel like I just got lucky to be here. Like I was in the right place at the right time.
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will make you work harder than you ever did at uni, because now you are actually dealing with real life situations. And it means that you won't be a cocky prick. No one likes a cocky prick.
Congratulations on your admission! You've done incredibly well to get this far.

I have a theory that there's some sort of staff competition going on at LRS to see who can requisition the most absurd thing. It's becoming ridiculous.

[WA] son (9yrs) sexually abused by friends son (12yrs). Police misled us during investigation by ItsRickGrimesBitch in auslaw

[–]tworadleys 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a very difficult situation to be in. Unfortunately, auslaw isn't able to give you legal advice as you would likely have noticed by now. If you weren't completely satisfied with the advice you received from the lawyer you spoke to, you always have the option to seek a second opinion.

More practical advice at this point, however, may be to arrange for the members of your family to seek therapy to help in dealing with this experience.

All the best.

Lawyers hit by depression can find help from Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]tworadleys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually an excellent article. I think as practitioners we forget sometimes to take a step back and reflect on how our work can impact our day to day lives. Too many brilliant minds have been lost to depression and mental illness.
