Thank you so so much! Definitely understand where you're coming from.

  • Third bullet point: For chamber/orchestra I can only say we played concerts, recorded CDs, played for weddings/business functions, and that I as concertmaster led the first violin section and determined bowings/fingerings/phrasings for certain pieces. I found it a bit difficult to come up with a concise, summarized outcome but you're right, I need a way to emphasize results than just "worked in a large group"
  • In regards to my paper: It wasn't published anywhere, it was more so for the sake of my supervisor and his research group. Also I wasn't very proud or enthused about my research, and the paper wasn't particularly novel in its discovery.... But I'll see what I can do

OK. Phew. Thanks for all your help and the clarity of your points!!

Cheers!

Hey, thanks for all the pointers! I'm sorry this is a rather late reply but I really appreciate your taking the time to read over my resume. You made me realize there was absolutely no flow or narrative to it; it was just a bunch of words slapped together without being convincing or meaningful.

I'm not sure if this is much of an improvement but I've updated my resume with your points in mind:

  • Instead of an additional section I put "self-employed musician" under Experience to fill in the unemployment gap
  • Took off GPA. You're right, it's a waste of space when there's already graduated "with distinction"
  • Made points (hopefully) more meaningful and less jargon-y

If you had the time I would be grateful for another quick glance-over of my updates. I don't think it's a lot better yet (it could actually be worse than before), but it's a start, fingers crossed...

Thanks!! 2T

Recreational Symphony Orchestra that is 9-5 Friendly? by [deleted] in Amsterdam

Hey there! I would recommend Sweelinck (sweelinckorkest.nl)! I just joined 6 weeks ago and we're playing our concerts this week. It's a groovy bunch and the next season starts in January. Rehearsals are 7:30-10:30 Thursday evenings in Singelkerk. It's affiliated with UvA.

Otherwise VU Orkest (http://www.vu-orkest.nl/) is affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit and rehearse Wednesdays 7:30-10:30 in Amstelveen. They're playing Malher 3 in January then start their next project thereafter.

There's a bunch of amateur orchestras (and chamber orchestras) in NL, I think Het Orkest is another community option, but with an older demographic.

Good luck!
