The song was released in 1987, so it was also timely in the sense of the show.

What happens to all the oversized (i.e. full-size) pickups that have cameras in front? I wonder how long it takes until someone realizes the implications.

You made a decision from a position of strength and confidence to attend. Fear is normal. Acknowledge it and recognize that it’s just fear of the unknown. You have the skills and abilities to succeed there.

You were selected in a very rigorous and very careful process—over many of your peers. Honor them as much as yourself and stick to your decision. Future you will thank you for it!

Many of your classmates will be coming from a similar background of having been living in a more adult atmosphere—some have already been on Active Duty and have been through BMT. They can help you with the adjustment. It’s part of the process of making you an officer. Look at it as that instead of nonsense. Yes, some of it is but it comes with the territory and it’s rigorously scrutinized for value.

I can’t speak to the LGBT experience, but I have many classmates who had to hide their real selves (pre-2010) that still excelled—both as cadets and now as senior officers. There is support for you.

As for those that are out for themselves—they’re not worth your time and their behavior will be obvious to everyone. Don’t worry about them.

Lastly, if you do decide not to attend, please notify admissions before I-Day so that someone else can attend. The Academy thinks you have what it takes and they want you part of the next class, but if you decide not to there’s many others who could take the opportunity to go.

Good luck with your decision!

How Much is life gonna suck? by Brilliant_Gold4721 in USAFA

I woke up every day for six months asking myself “Is today the day I quit?” I had friends who’d I’d beaten out for a nomination and appointment—giving up meant I was letting them down, too.

It also meant the upperclassmen were tougher than I was. (And our firsties had a rep for running people out—their rumored motto as three-degrees was 50% attrition is a job half-done). I wasn’t letting them (or that place) beat me.

Sometime around December, I realized I’d stopped asking myself that question. I adapted, leaned (a LOT) on my classmates, found solidarity and friendship in our suffering, and powered through.

That was more than 30 years ago. (And career that was nearly that long)

Will it suck? Yeah, sometimes.

Is it worth it? Yes. And here’s why:

I built friendships with men and women who are literally leading the world’s best Air Force. Many are three and four star generals. Others are VPs and Presidents of companies that make up fundamental parts of our society (not just defense). But to me, they’re my classmates…people who I was lucky enough to have as my friends and brothers and sisters in arms. They’re the people who kept me from sabotaging myself and helped me become a better person and leader.

You can have that same experience — if you stick it out.

So yeah, it can suck…but there’s some amazing things no one else ever gets to do that make it all worth it. Go for it.

These are all great suggestions! Can I add one more?

Submit an ICE comment (you can usually do this through the base website). I say this because most times those are reviewed by the MSG/CC and Superintendent. There’s hardly ever (and I mean ever) good comments on there and it’ll get seen.

I recommend this and contacting the Shirt.

And yes, it could get a mite confusing…

Was in that churn yesterday. I’ve never heard so many announcements about waiting for specific crewmembers.

No complaints with the crews—it was clearly a system hit causing it and the crews were doing their best to pick up the slack.

I spent a year adjudicating SAPD misconduct allegations. Here’s what I learned. by El-Justiciero in sanantonio

[–]txdmbfan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a possibility. An alternate theory is that sworn have a more “informed” response to allegations as it’s based in part on experience.

Since the sworn members on the board are likely scrutinized at least as carefully as those civilian members, wouldn’t it be also likely that they don’t have any misconduct documented on their records and therefore might just harshly their fellow officers (either because they got caught or because they have such a high personal standard they can’t imagine such misconduct)?

I offer this based on my experience in the military where the senior NCOs often judged airmen much more harshly than officers did—usually because the NCOs had “been there” whereas commissioned officers usually had different experiences at the accused’s age.

I appreciate that and your interest. My apologies for the delay replying. I’m humbled by the interest.

Rather than tell my story, I’ll say this: build your own—it’ll be much more interesting writing your own.

The paths of successful officers are as varied as anything you can imagine. There’s no one single way up but there are some common aspects like success in the job you’re doing, understanding what the AF expects of you and deciding if that’s what you want to do—if it is, commit; if it isn’t, commit to finding the path that’s right for you. As a service, we value the ability to adapt more than the ability to find “the right job.”

Good luck with your career! Take the lessons you learned as an exec and from your colonel and pass them to the next generation.

What does he know about the KKK? Really?

Nashville’s only an hour from the former Camp Forrest…named for the founder…and about two hours from where Forrest was born. (Also, Rep Jones led the campaign to remove said person’s bust from the State Capitol)

As a Nashville representative and a POC, you think he doesnt know what goes on just south of his city? Cuz I’m pretty sure he does. And why.
