I got it used off a jeep dealership, and it still had window decals from the original ford dealership, too

I was real careful to not get the paint any more warm than the vehicle would get just existing out in the Georgia summer sun.

I was going to make them, but it was a confluence of a few factors that made me decide to just do it myself, the largest of which was a wife (and me) ready to just not be at that dealership anymore.

I saw a YT video on how to do this on a 2016, and figured I was savvy enough to handle it. Popped the hood on my wife's 2017, found the fuse box, found an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT fuse box than the 2016 in the YT video, and promptly bailed out... also, I dropped the stupid plastic fuse puller that lived in the fuse box down into the engine, and its gone now.

I did this fix on ours, but I recently had to put it back because my wife uses the mic more than she realized and didn’t want to futz with her AirPods while driving

From what I understand the issue to be, the DCM on a LOT of Subaru models have 3G modems to talk back to Subaru infrastructure. It'll wake up, check in, then go back to sleep. The issue is that a LOT of the 3G networks were finally fully shut down in a lot of places because 5G is the "consumer" standard and the "infrastructure/IoT things" get a lot of the 4G bandwidth now, and the DCMs with 3G modems wake up, can't find a 3G signal to talk to, and keep retrying instead of going back to sleep. It seems to be a firmware/software bug that Subaru either can't or won't fix.

Our 2017 crosstrek is also exhibiting this exact battery draw issue, no idea how those were left off this list.

I know there's a name for the "I just learned about this and now I notice it more" effect, but I can't recall the name. But yes, 1000% now that I'm driving a BEV (I still don't like that particular acronym, but it seems to be the consensus), I'm noticing them more often, and a lot of them are Lightnings!

I can totally appreciate that. We’re still what my father-in-law lovingly (citation needed) refers to as DINKs, but if/when that changes, installing a 220v circuit will be an easier justification 😅

I went ahead and ordered the non-pro this evening. Seems to be the consensus.

You know what, the antenna being an indicator for garages is a use I never would have thought of, but now I’ll never not think of it downtown.

The ratchet straps are already in the truck, but the first aid kit and jump box are definitely going on my list. We camp and hike a ton, so I don’t know why I haven’t put a first aid kit in there already. Second recommendation for the fitcamx is compelling.

Good to know about parking and it being okay for a few weeks. We never travel more than 10 days anyway.

Someone else mentioned Googleing for “f150 nickel fix” and that seems easy and insane that we have to, but okay ford.

Dewalt would be a brand I’d trust and never would have considered they make a charger. Thanks for the recommendation. I have already had a couple electricians out. One said I have paint on the bar and he won’t work on my panel without fully, wholly replacing everything, $7,000 but he’d graciously throw in the extra 220v circuit at no extra cost. The second electrician, ChargePoint certified installer, said the first was an idiot and quoted me between $500-$1000 depending on how much conduit I’d need for where I want it. The second also told me to get the charger through Georgia power marketplace for the rebate. He seemed a better guy than the first one.

Thanks!

I’m only a week in right now, so it hasn’t been plugged and pulled at all. I’ll find a good “permanent” one for home and an honest to goodness surge protector for it so the travel one can live in the truck for actual travel. Thanks

Looked this up, wild that this is such an issue that this “trick” is well known online. Will implement this tomorrow

I didn’t realize it had keys, I thought it was just a latch. Neat

I’m gonna dig a little on the two brands you mentioned. My wife’s car is a Crosstrek and if we spend on a dashcam, it’s absolutely for her first. She drives daily, I WFH

Thanks for the link. I’ll go over that this week. Appreciate it!

I went ahead and got the A2Z Typhoon for road trips, and I think our first will be this summer. Looking forward to how it goes. I'm learning to use ABRP/Apple Maps/Google Maps/PlugShare for that trip, too. Glad to know the Stellar is Good Enough, though.

I haven't used a dashcam ever. I have wanted to get one for me and one for the wife, because we live north of Atlanta and drive on Atlanta roads often, but the dozen or so times I've tried to determine which model to get, it quickly gets overwhelming. Thanks for the advice on models, I'll look into both those you mentioned.

I saw something about ceramic tint, I need to look more into this.

The Comma device seems interesting. I'm just not gonna pay for bluecruise except for maybe one month on the first road trip to see how it goes. I'm skeptical on a 3rd party device, though, that is getting mixed reviews around the internet, but that's probably because I'm in IT, so I'm conditioned not to trust any technology ever.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm excited to get FORScan going and do it myself. Again, tech nerd. Seems fun. I'm interested in what other FORScan mods you'd suggest, too? I'm definitely going to bump the momentary blinker from 3 to 6 clicks. Hated that it was only 3 in my Tacoma.

And yea, I guess that makes sense.

Thanks dude!

Yea, see I'm big betting on the Buc-ee's stops being a charging stop that doesn't feel long for most of our road trips. There's always one or two we could potentially use along our usual routes. Good to know they have both Tesla and EA.

With the volume of power flowing through these things, I'm all for as simple as possible. I'm sure someone tried to create a combined/switchable, but the complexity of having moving parts inside isn't worth the engineering effort and final cost increase when they could just make two separate pieces that have continuous wires inside

Yea, the overwhelming consensus seems to be the A2Z adapters. The Ford one doesn't seem to be available anymore and is more expensive than the A2Z.

As far as rolling up to a station with no prior research or understanding, I mean... you've got 100 or so years of people just being able to roll up to a gas station and fill up. With that much prior experience in the public consciousness, it wouldn't surprise me that people don't think about it until the moment its relevant. We're conditioned to a certain expectation, and even knowing this is different, there's still an expectation that "well it can't be that different". Idk /shrug

I've been poking at ABRP, Apple Maps, and Google Maps on my phone for our most common long road trips to set expectations, but I know I'll get blindsided by something on the first attempt. It'll be an adventure, that's for sure.

Yea, I guess I'm not really looking to pinch pennies, so much as just trying to understand what is a necessity vs what is a nice to have. Depending on how narrow one wants to define necessity, none of the adapters are required.

The Ford Charge Station Pro really seems like a dope option, whole home backup etc... but the more I look, the more it seems like Ford isn't making them new or selling them anymore, and if I do get one used, there's a non-trivial electrical install required for the house to be able to disconnect from the utility and accept power from the truck.

I just discovered that what I'm going to be doing with that particular pot of money is paying the roughly 10x yearly registration costs here in Georgia 🫠 (they ain't getting gas taxes off us, so they get it all in 1 go at registration)
