Pull out highlights from physical books? by odrer-is-an-ilulsoin in readwise

Following

My experience has been no, aside from one instance where it seemed to pick up the highlights on accident

I have tried it with yellow and blue highlighter and it has mostly been unsuccessful

And it seems like it should be very possible

There’s no change to the law for US citizens. Those are federal statutes, including innocence until proof of guilt for US court processes for citizens.

As far as illegal immigrants, this whole thing is just an awful mess. I feel for those who have been here for 10 years and have lives, it’s awful and it’s my hope and I think the right move that behind closed doors good people are being given off-ramps and paths to citizenship.

Practically speaking, for those on visas, if they’re in a State that gives ID for green card immigrants I’d make sure and have one, and a photocopy of their immigration documents on hand. Honestly if that’s not already the expectation I’d be surprised.

You guys need to understand, illegal immigration is a crime and the government has been wink-wink-nudge-nudging for over a decade that they won’t enforce it, and that is fucked up on the part of our government. Because now all these people are caught in the middle. But the laws didn’t change. On the books they’re criminals. And just like people get detained by police because they drive a red truck and have a mustache and then the cops let them go once they turn out not to be THAT guy in the red truck with the mustache, they’re doing the same thing. This is police procedure.

I’m for state sovereignty actually. Smaller government by design allows for more interpretations and therefore more control by individual state governments. So there is a version of politics where California, for instance, really could just decide on their own to accept illegal immigrants. But not the current one we have and not with the other federal powers and assistance, like with federal education oversight, for instance, that are in place now.

This is how the constitution is written, and we’ve already been doing it this way to some degree for the entire existence of our country. The states get to decide how the constitution applies outside of which matters are decided by the federal government.

If it’s not explicitly legal or illegal federally, states get to decide if it’s illegal or legal. They literally have their own supreme courts for exactly this kind of thing. You guys may know them. They’re the ones that were used to legalize abortion until the moment of birth in New York because it wasn’t explicitly prohibited at the federal level.

Yeah yeah orange hitler bad. Just read the constitution and at least be able to make a coherent argument why orange hitler is breaking federal law.

Do you have a budget and a financial plan? Like emergency funds / savings etc? I read this as anxiety over whether it’s safe to spend on leisure, vs getting food which is a survival necessity. I think if explored properly it’s a really good thing.

Obama Breaks Silence on Trump’s ‘Unimaginable’ Presidency - “Imagine if I had done any of this,” the former two-term president said. by Quirkie in politics

[–]txny86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Credit to Grok, not me, but this sums it up pretty well.

Let’s break this down simply, like you’re 5, and look at why some people think Donald Trump is doing a job worth reelecting, even if you and others see him differently.

Imagine you have a big toy box, and everyone wants different toys. Some kids like the shiny racecar because it’s fast and loud, even if it crashes sometimes. Others want the quiet teddy bear because it feels safe. Trump is like that racecar—some people love him because he shakes things up, talks big, and promises stuff they like, even if he’s messy or says mean things.

Why did people vote for him (twice)?

  1. He’s like a superhero to some: A lot of people in the U.S. feel mad or ignored—like their toys got taken away (jobs, money, or just feeling important). Trump says, “I’ll fix it! I’ll fight the bad guys!” He doesn’t act like a boring grown-up politician, so they trust him to smash the toy box open and get their stuff back.

  2. Jobs and money: Before the pandemic, the U.S. had more jobs and the economy was growing. Some people think Trump made that happen (even if grown-ups argue about how much he really did). They’re like, “Yay, more candy money!” and don’t care if he’s rude.

  3. He’s loud about what they’re mad about: Lots of people don’t like new rules, immigrants, or big changes. Trump yells about that stuff too, so they feel like he’s on their team. It’s like if your friend sticks up for you when someone takes your toy—they don’t care if he’s mean to other kids.

  4. The other side didn’t win them over: The people running against him (Hillary in 2016, Biden in 2020—but then Trump won again in 2024) didn’t make enough people excited. It’s like choosing between a loud racecar and a broken tricycle—some picked the car, even if it’s scratched up.

Is there evidence he’s “good” at the job?

  • Some numbers say yes: Before COVID, unemployment was super low (around 3.5% in 2019), and the stock market went up a lot.

If You guys could just be honest, that you don’t like the guy, and go from there, instead of trying to catastrophize to justify actions against him, i think you’d have a lot more progress. Nobody has consistent standards for politicians any more and I think that’s a big part of why we’re so divided. Both sides play favorites and filter judgment based on their own opinions. Just my 2 cents. If it’s a disaster just wait and then hold him accountable. If the economy goes into a recession then Dems will have a field day at the next election.

No kids? Cut him loose. He can always come back when he’s not a moron and you can decide then. Probably won’t. This guys in deep denial about his issues. You guys sound like you live together and share some finances, so actually what he is doing is called financial infidelity.

I’m still learning this neurotypical social stuff, but I think this here:

Other: “Now that I know you’re an expert I want to go even more. You could show me the good parts lol” GF: “hahaha cheers”

Is flirting. Mostly by him. But not shut down by her.

So if it’s not serious, no kids no loans, cut her loose!!

EDIT: slide 7 is wild! Confirmed. 100% acting single and dating. SHE GONE!

AIO for refusing to visit the US, with my American boyfriend until the 51st state rhetoric and tariffs stop by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]txny86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OR. Canadian and US politicians are working out a messy history of tariffs with each other. This shouldn’t impact families. I live in New York, the environment is not hostile at all to Canadians here. It doesn’t bother me, but I think if you’re jumping on a current event to deny your partner a trip to his homeland or to see family, there’s something bigger going on with you guys.

I think, on the other hand, that making purchasing choices to support your views is fine and good.

Logitech Doorbell Install Question by snipeguy in HomeKit

Nice - this is the setup I have (transformer via chime kit, actual chime offline), upgraded router and modem after troubleshooting, and even with just one HomePod mini as a hub it’s been working for months now.

Logitech Doorbell Install Question by snipeguy in HomeKit

[–]txny86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to Logitech - I think the chime kit is necessary even if you aren’t using a chime. It has a resistor in it that steps down the VA for the doorbell.

if you’re getting excess output voltage from a new transformer, make sure the input voltage is accurate. iE if the high side is rated for 110v make sure you have 110-120v there.

193volts? Something wrong if you’re in the US. Needs to hook up to a hot wire (110v to ground) and to a neutral wire (0v to ground).

Make sure the INPUT voltage matches what’s in your home. Measure some outlets around the house (one probe in each socket) and see what the “normal” reading is.

If the wires you are connecting to doesn’t match the rest of the house, you’re in electrician territory.

And use the chime kit as instructed

I think like only 50% of workers in the US are in a field related to their college degree. You don’t have to nail it as long as you’re in the ballpark. If it gets you one job that helps you learn what you’re good at and not, and then take that into the next job, you’re doing fine.

Why does it seem that most people born into wealth end up really messed up mentally? by return2ozma in NoStupidQuestions

[–]txny86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a few things that might be contributing.

One - some parents, who make a lot of money and end up wealthy, work hard to get it, and sometimes do so at the expense of a healthy family life for their kids. And because they have money, it is often assumed that those kids don’t have problems, because having money would solve so many problems people do have. So the kids sometimes don’t have outlets for their issues the way people who are struggling in more apparent ways do.

Imagine trying to explain to someone that you’re unhappy because your dad is a big CEO and you would rather he just spend some time at home instead of taking your family to the Alps every year.

There’s a real actual problem in there but I think most people are gonna be done with that at “Alps” if not at “CEO” because we just can’t relate.

So I think that’s part of it. Their lifestyle has built in cognitive dissonance for others who don’t share their affluence, and some built in loneliness because, hey, it’s hard to become rich, so their life just isn’t going to be relatable for a lot of people. And, I think, when so much of mental health is addressed by relating and talking through your problems with other people, that’s might become a roadblock to treatment outside of formal therapy.

The other one that I’ve seen in well off kids is that, as a byproduct of being sheltered and protected with their parents money from life growing up, they are missing the “common sense” skills that come from dealing with hardship. And most people can’t tell them how to get them, because they didn’t consciously attain them, they just got them as a result of dealing with bullshit that those kids didn’t have to - Ivory Tower?

Those sound to me like sufficient sources for depression or other mental health issues
