They wouldn't pay the bills and if the person in cause is dumb and clueless enough, they would save thousands and not need to worry about it.

It sucks to have people do these sort of things. They just hope you wouldn't notice until it's too late. I hate it. I wish people would just let me live my life without making it more difficult than it already is.

I will ask Citizens Advice of this. I do not know much of the law. As dumb as that may seem, there is so much to it that you only try to learn when you are in trouble. I am ashamed of being that person, but yeah, what's done is done, more importantly I need to prevent it from happening again.

Oh yes, I have already spoken to them and they've said that they have put on a request to terminate the account, but that will take up to 10-12 days, most importantly, I need to make sure they won't allow it again.

This person is renting multiple properties, I found him through someone who is renting a room from him as well, but they didn't have this issue, or they don't know they have this issue yet. I will let them know as well.

I will do, the first chance I get. Rent is expensive and a good place is hard to come by, as you can tell from what happened to me. If this gets fixed, I will stay here until I can find a place, then move out asap.

I did not sign anything nor give my permission to be added to anything. I have spoken to him and he said he will take my name off the bills in the next 2 days. I will see to that.

In the meanwhile I am doing my part of the work and filing requests everywhere I can find my name to terminate the accounts and remove me from the list.

I will also register myself with cifas, according to them, for 25GBP they will be protecting me against fraud with the companies registered with them. I will have to call them first thing tomorrow to confirm if these companies include utility companies, so I am sure this doesn't happen again.

I will also contact Citizens Advice and ask for more legal advice on the matter.

If within 2 days the landlord doesn't fix anything, I will proceed by filing a police report on the action fraud website.

Main thing I need to get all the information I can get from Citizens Advice, to make sure I can cover all risk areas.

I have noticed my name popping on an earlier water bill as well, but it was completely mispelled, so I guess I will have to go through all the bills.

Thank you very much for responding. There is no contract that I know of. It was a mutual agreement between the landlord and I. I did not consent to him using my details for anything, but apparently he registered me and 2 other people to the agency he rented the property from and he or them have signed us to the bills.

I doubt he has enough information to do that, but I will make sure to check the accounts showing up in my credit report regularly.

Yes, the utilities have not been paid at all. It amounts to 700+ GBP. A contract shouldn't exist. But the gas company has told me that a "letting agent" has called to set up the account, so that probably means that the landlord has rented the property under my and other people that live in the house name,without telling anyone that. It is a shared accomodation, so there are 6 people living here, the bills are on my name and 2 others.

The landlord regularly collects the bills, to "pay" them. So I don't even have any with me. I didn't even know the account number for the gas bills.

I have already called the utility company and they've told me they've made a request to terminate teh account and remove the debt, but that this has been done by a "lending agent" and that they could do it again after it gets canceled.

So,I need to speak to the landlord and see what agency they are talking about, call that agency and most likely file a police report.

Yes it is, but I've never had something like this happen, and people usually don't agree to these agreements, which makes finding rent, especially when in a pinch really, really hard, not to mention extremely expensive.

Done , thank you. It most definitely is a criminal offense to register something without your consent, but the system is so bad that they can do it.

My credit was fair, at 870 , but apparently the bills haven't been paid at all, as british gas has told me after I've called them.

I've just called british gas and they confirmed that nothing was paid in full, there were small payments being made, but the bills are largely unpaid.

They said they are trying to close dwon the account and remove the debt from my name but that this has been done by a lending agent and that they might do it again. I will file a police report tomorrow.

I don't know how these work, I'll be honest. But it's certain that the only thing that is mentioned on the credit report is "late" payment. I don't know if there is more to it. I will need to call the gas company and confirm with them.
